With help from the Ministry to Catholics of African Ancestry, and in particular Gary Etheridge, Our Holy Redeemer was on “the Mile” ourselves that day, and greeted anyone and everyone who came aboard Grover’s Dock, including Mr. Grover. Mr. Grover not only came aboard, but stayed aboard to tell his tale; not the tale of a fateful trip that started from a tropic port aboard a tiny ship (aka Gilligan’s Island); not the tale of some who went off to the sea in ships, and plied their trade on deep waters (cf. Psalm 107); but the tale of Faith that didn’t just bring a man on Woodcleft Avenue to Our Holy Redeemer, the tale of Faith that helped bring Our Holy Redeemer to Woodcleft Avenue! Our Holy Redeemer’s first “official” appearance on Woodcleft took place in 1981 after Monsignor Saverio Mattei (Our Holy Redeemer’s sixth Pastor) received permission from Bishop John R. McGann (the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s second Bishop) to offer Mass on a boat donated to the parish by Mr. Joseph Scalamandre. That offering, with the help of dozens of parishioners (and dozens of doughnuts), sadly went adrift in 1999, and didn’t return again until twelve years later when, at the prompting of the Holy Spirit (not to mention the prompting of parishioner Jack Impellizeri, a member of the original crew), Mass on the Waterfront (the “Boat Mass”) was offered on Grover’s Dock. Since Our Holy Redeemer’s official return to Woodcleft Avenue in 2011, Grover’s Dock (175 Woodcleft Avenue) has become Our Holy Redeemer’s “home away from home”. And while nothing (and I do mean nothing) can compare to the annual Summertime Sunday offering of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass (and of course the doughnuts), the Good News of Our Holy Redeemer is reaching the ears and touching the hearts and souls of more than just the Sunday Waterfront Mass-goers. For the second consecutive year, with the help of Our Holy Redeemer’s Director of Music Michael Crouse, and Friends of Our Holy Redeemer such as Larry Vodopivec, 175 Woodcleft Avenue has become the setting for an Our Holy Redeemer Summer Concert Series (please see this bulletin’s Summer Concert Series Page) that this past Wednesday night (10 June) allowed Our Holy Redeemer to touch over one hundred people with gifted-pianist Duncan Holmes and a variety of other so-called “people with disabilities”. It was as billed: “so beautiful”! There are still many amongst us that have eyes but they do not see why coming home is what it’s all about. (cf. Saint Mark VIII:18) Even blind pianist Duncan Holmes “saw” that when he mentioned CEO Christians: Christmas and Easter Only. That is why after two thousand years, Our Holy Redeemer continues to leave the house and go down to the water! (cf. Saint Matthew XIII:1) A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR WOULD YOU HELP "GIVE US A LIFT" ? Shortly before Christmas 2014, Our Holy Redeemer's outdoor lift became inoperable. And while it could be repaired (again) at a cost of a few thousand dollars, I have decided, after going “up and down” that route a few times before, that Our Holy Redeemer has spent enough money on repairs and that it makes more (dollars and) sense to replace it an estimated cost (based on the figures of three proposals) of $40,000.00. In order to help offset that cost, the Parish has reached out to (and is waiting to hear from) Nassau County, the Village of Freeport, and private charitable organizations that grant funds for services that assist the elderly and disabled. Any assistance you can provide will literally give us a lift! The following people have begun to lift us up: Arnold Gallo, William Gallo, The Village of Freeport, the Friends of Angie Cullin, Alan and Cathy Richartz, John Anzovino, Margaret Nyland, Diana Gibson, Our Holy Redeemer Parishioners who participate in the “Oceanside Christopher Federal Credit Union Parish Revenue Sharing Program”, Mr. & Mrs. Walter Shorak, Gloria Di Brizzi, Gloria Cintorino, Barbara and Raymond Burkart, Carol Sparaco, Ann Kelly With their help we raised nearly $7,000! And with help from you, people on the lift will soon be raised up too! OUR HOLY REDEEMER ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH Yes, I would like to help give Our Holy Redeemer “a LIFT!”! Please deposit your donation with this form in the Sunday Offertory basket or drop it off at the Rectory, Monday through Saturday from 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. (Checks should be made payable to Our Holy Redeemer Parish). Thank you! The Father (Second Part) Dear Brothers and Sisters, Good morning! Today I would like to develop the second part of my reflection on the figure of the father in the family. Last time I spoke about the danger of “absent” fathers, today I would like to look instead at the positive aspect. Even St Joseph was tempted to leave Mary, when he discovered that she was pregnant; but the Angel of the Lord intervened and revealed to him God’s plan and his mission as foster father; and Joseph, a just man, “took his wife” (Mt 1:24) and became the father of the family of Nazareth. Every family needs a father. Today we shall reflect on the value of his role, and I would like to begin with a few expressions that we find in the Book of Proverbs, words that a father addresses to his own son, and it reads like this: “My son, if your heart is wise, my heart too will be glad. My soul will rejoice when your lips speak what is right” (Pr 23:15-16). Nothing could better express the pride and emotion a father feels when he understands that he has handed down to his child what really matters in life, that is, a wise heart. This father does not say: “I am proud of you because you are the same as me, because you repeat the things I say and do”. No, he does not say anything so simple to him. He says something much more important, which we can understand in this way: “I will be happy every time I see you act with wisdom, and I will be moved every time that I hear you speak with rectitude. This is what I wanted to leave to you, that this one thing become yours: the attitude to feel and act, to speak and judge with wisdom and rectitude. And that you might be like this, I taught you the things you didn’t know, I corrected the errors you didn’t see. I made you feel a profound and at the same time discrete affection, which maybe you did not fully recognize when you were young and unsure. I gave you a testimony of rigour and steadfastness that perhaps you didn’t understand, when you would have liked only complicity and protection. I had first to test myself in the wisdom of my heart, be vigilant of my excesses of sentiment and resentment, in order to carry the weight of the inevitable misunderstandings, to find the right words to make myself understood.” Now, continues the father, “I see that you strive to be this way with your own children, and with everyone, and it moves me. I am happy to be your father”. This is what a wise father, a mature father, says. A father knows all too well what it costs to hand down this heritage: how close, how gentle and how firm to be. But what consolation and what recompense he receives when the children honour this legacy! It is a joy that rewards all the toil, that overcomes every misunderstanding and heals every wound. The first need, then, is precisely this: that a father be present in the family. That he be close to his wife, to share everything, joy and sorrow, hope and hardship. And that he be close to his children as they grow: when they play and when they strive, when they are carefree and when they are distressed, when they are talkative and when they are silent, when they are daring and when they are afraid, when they take a wrong step and when they find their path again; a father who is always present. To say “present” is not to say “controlling”! Fathers who are too controlling cancel out their children, they don't let them develop. The Gospel speaks to us about the exemplarity of the Father who is in Heaven — who alone, Jesus says, can be truly called the “good Father” (cf. Mk 10:18). Everyone knows that extraordinary parable of the “prodigal son”, or better yet of the “merciful father”, which we find in the Gospel of Luke in chapter 15 (cf. 15:11-32). What dignity and what tenderness there is in the expectation of that father, who stands at the door of the house waiting for his son to return! Fathers must be patient. Often there is nothing else to do but wait; pray and wait with patience, gentleness, magnanimity and mercy. A good father knows how to wait and knows how to forgive from the depths of his heart. Certainly, he also knows how to correct with firmness: he is not a weak father, submissive and sentimental. The father who knows how to correct without humiliating is the one who knows how to protect without sparing himself. Once I heard a father at a meeting on marriage say: “Sometimes I have to strike the children lightly... but never in the face so as not to humiliate them”. How beautiful! He has a sense of dignity. He must punish, but he does it in a just way, and moves on. If, then, there is someone who can fully explain the prayer of the “Our Father”, taught by Jesus, it is the one who lives out paternity in the first person. Without the grace that comes from the Father who is in Heaven, fathers loose courage, and abandon camp. But children need to find a father waiting for them when they come home after failing. They will do everything not to admit it, not to show it, but they need it; and not to find it opens wounds in them that are difficult to heal. The Church, our mother, is committed to supporting with all her strength the good and generous presence of fathers in families, for they are the irreplaceable guardians and mediators of faith in goodness, of faith in justice and in God’s protection, like St Joseph. SCRIPTURE REFLECTION What do you pray for: For success or for fidelity? In this Parable Jesus says that with the Kingdom of God “it is as if a man were to scatter seed on the land and would sleep and rise night and day and through it all the seed would sprout and grow.” without the man knowing how. (See Saint Mark 4:26-34) You see, we are called to be faithful, not successful. Yes, some are more successful than others, but this should not deter us. The growth comes from God. All of us in ministry need to take this to heart, and in particular parents need to understand this. Sometimes we think we have failed because our children do not go the way we think they should. But we must remember it is God who makes the seed grow even when we go to sleep, even when we do not even know how it grows. Be faithful in sowing the seed, yes do as much as you can, “scatter seed on the land”, and then, let God do the rest. At His own good time, He will make it grow. That little mustard seed will become a large plant and will put forth large branches. Pray for fidelity. Be faithful. God will see to it that the seeds you plant will grow. 2015 Catholic ministries appeal HELPING OTHERS RUN THE RACE … …IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN WHO WON THE RACE!!! Ff FAITH AND GOVERNMENT STORM HEAVEN TO PRESERVE FREEDOM OF RELIGION IN AMERICA Seventy-one years ago, on 6 June 1944, thousands of Americans and other people of Good-will stormed the shores of Normandy and sacrificed their lives to renew the face of Europe. Three years ago, on 21 June 2012, millions of Catholics and other people of Good-will in America, stormed Heaven and sacrificed time, talent, and treasure that is renewing the face of America. We the people believe that thousands of our American ancestors didn’t sacrifice their lives on 6 June 1944 so “a government of the people by the people for the people” could force “we the people” of America to violate our consciences. Yet that is what the Obama-government has done with the writing and passage of the so-called “Affordable Care and Patient Protection Act”. That is not good government and it is not good healthcare. Please storm Heaven with us again on 21 June 2015 when a Fortnight for Freedom returns to America from “California to the New York Island; from the red wood forest to the Gulf Stream waters” remembering as you go “walking that Freedom highway” that “this land was made for you and me”. Sacrifices were made to establish it. And sacrifices must be made to preserve it. FORTNIGHT EVENTS IN THE PARISH OF OUR HOLY REDEEMER: Sunday, 21 June Patriotic Rosary 8:00 P.M. In schools - children are told they can’t bring their religious beliefs into their writing and speech. A 5 th grade girl on Long Island was told she could not pray her rosary at lunchtime or she would be sent to the principal’s office. A 4th grader wrote about Jesus so his teacher called him in, tore up his essay and said, “We don’t write about Jesus in this school. You have to write another essay.” In the military - Walter Reed Military Medical Center issued guidelines in 2011stating, "No religious items, Bibles, etc. are allowed to be given away or used during a visit." In Texas, officials at Houston's national cemetery barred any religious services at graveside and ignored denunciations by Congress and families. In business - Florists, bakers and photographers are fined, prosecuted and driven out of business for following their consciences in declining to celebrate same sex unions. In religious organizations - The Little Sisters of the Poor are told they are “not religious enough” to be exempt from the Health and Human Services Mandate requiring them to provide contraception, sterilization and abortion inducing drugs to their employees or face bankrupting fines. Catholic hospitals, charities and universities face the same heavy hand of regulation denying deeply held religious beliefs. The United States Constitution and Bill of Rights have protected freedom of conscience and religion for over two hundred years. Tragically, Americans became complacent about their religious freedom. Pope Francis reminds us, “Freedom is a gift and a personal responsibility. It is a challenge held out to each generation and it must constantly be won over for the sake of good.” *Fortnight Opening Mass. NOW A WORD FROM OUR POPE (ABOUT THE FAMILY) PAPA FRANCISCO AUDIENCIA GENERAL Sala de audiencias de Paulo VI Miércoles, 28 de Enero de 2015 La Familia - 3. It is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade.” Saint Mark IV: 30-32 Directions: Find the words below from today’s Scripture reading in the puzzle.
