This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.’ " Matthew 22: 35-40 Many misinterpret Christ’s admonition to mean that we must love ourselves first. He was not saying that we must love ourselves before we love anyone else. He was saying nonetheless that our focus as stewards needs to be on serving and loving others. The good steward respects, regards, and loves others as he or she might expect to be treated. Love and stewardship are very much the same - each strives to put others before our own interests. - See more at: http:// www.thecatholicsteward.com/#sthash.20xU0WY9.dpuf STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE - OCT 19 Envelopes/Sobres: Plate/Canasta: Maintenance-Upkeep: World Mission Sunday Funds on deposit with the Diocese: Page 2 $ 9,160.77 $ 814.98 $ 624.00 $ 1,170.00 $165,625.97 PARISH CALENDAR Sunday, October 26 - Domingo, 26 de Octubre 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time 9:00 am Parish School of Religion 10:00am RICA 11:00am Ensayo del Coro Hispano 11:00am Escuela de Religión 6:00pm Trunk or Treat 7:00pm Guadalupe Matachines Dancers Practice Monday, October 27 - Lunes, 27 de Octubre 10:00am Uplift Cooks 6:30pm Marian Prayer Group 6:30pm Cub Scouts 7:00pm Boy Scouts 7:00pm Select Parables of a Jewish Rabbi Named Jesus 7:00pm Talleres de Oracion y Vida Tuesday, October 28 - Martes, 28 de Octubre 7:00pm Living Stones 7:00pm Ensayo de la Obra de Guadalupe Wednesday, October 29- Miércoles, 29 de Octubre 9:00am Legion of Mary 10:00am Select Parables of a Jewish Rabbi Named Jesus 7:00pm Choir Practice 7:00pm ESL (Ingles como Segunda Lengua) 7:00pm Rebranding Catholicism: Pope Francis’ Vision Thursday, October 30 - Jueves, 30 de Octubre 9:30am Quilters 10:00am Rebranding Catholicism: Pope Francis’ Vision 7:00pm Guadalupe Matachines Dancers Practice 7:00pm Ensayo de la Obra de Guadalupe 7:00pm RCIA 7:00pm Spanish Class Friday, October 31 - Viernes, 31 de Octubre 10:00am Spanish Class, Double Classroom 7:00pm Guadalupe Matachines Dancers Practice Saturday, November 1 - Sábado, 1 de Noviembre Daylight Savings Time Ends Tonight 3:00pm Confessions Altar Society Jewelry Sale after 4pm Mass Sunday, November 2 - Domingo, 2 de Noviembre Altar Society Jewelry Sale after Masses 9:00am All Soul’s Reception 9:00am Parish School of Religion 10:00am RICA 11:00am Ensayo del Coro Hispano 11:00am Escuela de Religión 1:30pm Ensayo de la Obra de Guadalupe 4:00pm Chili Cook-off fundraiser for Lori Stewart 7:00pm Guadalupe Matachines Dancers Practice 7:00pm Confirmation & High School Youth Group PASTORAL CARE FROM DEATH TO NEW LIFE DE LA MUERTE A LA NUEVA VIDA † Oscar Humberto Torres, hermano de Obdulia Chavarria † Steve VanDee, friend of Rob Kottenbrock † Napoleon Alfaro, primo de Miguel Pacheco † Mary Lopez, mother of Mary Ann Baldassaro MAY THEY REST IN PEACE. We especially invite all those who have lost a loved one over the past year. All widows and widowers are also invited to attend. SOCIAL JUSTICE RESPECT LIFE—EUTHANASIA AND ASSISTED SUICIDE Euthanasia is an action or omission that of itself or by intention causes death in order to alleviate suffering. The Catholic Church teaches that it is never okay to euthanize or assist suicide in any way. Dying patients who request euthanasia should receive loving care, psychological and spiritual support, and appropriate remedies for pain and other symptoms so that they can live with dignity until the time of natural death. -(United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.) This week, let’s pray for the terminally ill, that they may live the rest of their lives with dignity; and for their families, who may face difficult decisions regarding the medical care for their loved ones. BREAD FOR THE WORLD SUNDAY Every year our parish participates in an “Offering of Letters” by signing a petition urging Congress to act on laws that affect the hungry. This weekend we have our petition available to sign in the gathering space, asking our members of Congress to make changes to US Food Aid policies that would make our food aid program more effective. Some of these changes include: providing more nutritious food through food-aid—especially to women and children in the 1000 day window from conception to the child’s second birthday, and buying more of the foodaid food locally, helping to support local farmers and to reduce costs of the food provided. Please consider adding your name to the petition. REMEMBRANCE TABLE - ALL SOULS This year in conjunction with All Souls Day and to honor those who have gone before us we will have an Area of Remembrance in the north alcove. We invite you to bring a picture of your deceased loved one to display on the table. This display to honor all of our faithfully departed will remain up through the Feast of Christ the King, Sunday November 23rd. SAVE THE DATE - SAT., NOV. 15TH - 10AM Plan on joining us for a educational presentation by Catholic Charities “Mental Health Basics, Understanding Its Impact on Families”. FOCUS ON MENTAL ILLNESS LANGUAGE The dignity of the individual is paramount in our belief that we are all created in the image and likeness of God. Our language should reflect that belief. When talking about mental illness, we need to use “people first language.” We refer to people as the person they are not the disease they have. So we say “a person who has mental illness” or “a man or woman with a mental illness.” We avoid referring to people using terms like “the mentally ill” or “the depressed.” As people of compassion and justice we should never use stigmatizing language or demeaning terms. Consider how we speak about mental illness, how it is referred to by the media, and any changes that need to be made. For more information contact Marta Roper in the parish office 816-979-3154 or [email protected]. Page 3 LITURGY NOW FORMING: ART & ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE What Is Art and Environment? Simply put, it is the decoration of the church space. But more than that, it is the way we enhance our worship by highlighting important areas in the church. You may notice that the church decorations change as the seasons of the church year change. It takes a group of people to make that happen. Many different skills, talents and interests are needed. You may be a seamstress and desire to help sew banners or other fabric decoration. Perhaps you have an eye for design and could help design banners or seasonal decoration. You might have a green thumb and be interested in caring for the live plants on a weekly basis. Maybe you just like to help out and would enjoy the work of putting up and taking down seasonal decorations a few times a year. Whatever your interests, you are invited to attend an organizational meeting of the Art and Environment committee on Thursday, October 23 at 1:00 PM in the parish conference room. Contact Susan Ratigan in the parish office at 979-3158 or [email protected] for more information. LECTORS 2015 Lector Workbooks are available in the sacristy. Please pick up the book with your name on the envelope. If you can make a donation of $10 to help defray the cost of the book, it is appreciated. Just place the $10 in the envelope and return it to the box. Please take a book even if you are not able to make the donation. Thank you. NEW ORGAN Our parish has been blessed with the purchase of a new organ! The current organ was purchased used in the late 1970’s and has served our parish well for all these years. It is a concern, though, that it is difficult to repair now that technology has changed so much. The new organ is a Rodgers Trillium 807 and will be a blessing to our parish for many years to come. Thanks to those who have made donations toward its purchase. If you wish to make a donation, please contact Susan Ratigan in the parish office at 979-3158 or [email protected]. PARISH INFORMATION FUNDRAISER FOR LORI STEWART - NOV 2 Parishioner Lori Stewart was diagnosed with breast cancer in May and has already undergone chemo and surgery. ADULT FAITH FORMATION REFLECTION ON THE 30TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR A God’s teachings given to Moses and to all Jews on Mount Sinai contained 613 commandments. With so many rules and regulations, it often meant that some would get more attention than others. The lawyer’s question in today’s gospel, while apparently meant to test Jesus, was a legitimate question: “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” Jesus responds by quoting two commands from the law which in his estimation sum up and focus all the other commandments: love God and love neighbor as yourself. While loving God is the first and the greatest commandment, the second is equated with the first. Loving neighbor as self is equivalent to loving God. Jesus concludes by affirming that “the whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.” The heart of Jesus’ teachings, actions and life are also summed up in these commandments. For Jesus, love of neighbor as yourself is the equivalent of loving God. Matthew sums up Jesus’ attitude and perspective in chapter 25, the final judgment scene, the gospel reading for the upcoming feast of Christ the King, the last Sunday of our Liturgical year. This fitting conclusion to the liturgical year has the Lord declare that “whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers and sisters, you do to me.” Our intimacy with the Lord will be based on the love and intimacy we have shared with all of God’s people, most especially the poor and powerless. The first reading from Exodus clearly concretizes Jesus’ attitude and perspective. The alien, the widow, the orphan and the poor are our neighbors. In most societies, these people are vulnerable in so many ways because they have little or no legal or economic rights, privileges or power. Their survival depends on the goodness, generosity and compassion of others. Our compassionate God hears the cry of the poor and powerless, and demands that we also be compassionate towards all. In the second reading Paul praises his beloved Thessalonian community for being a “model for all believers.” Their way of living out the faith is so manifest in their words and actions that “we have no need to say anything.” Their hospitality and compassion towards Paul, his companions and others is known by all, for they have turned from idols and now “serve the living and true God.” In so doing they manifest the compassion of God to all they meet. Why are we commanded to treat others with compassion? Because our loving God has treated us with compassion, not counting our offenses against us while always being gentle and forgiving. When we are in dire need, God hears and responds with compassion. We too need to respond in kind, for we are the living presence and image of God to one another. How else will others know of God’s love and compassion unless we manifest that concretely to all we encounter? This demand is difficult for us to practice consistently. We are always in need of God’s help to follow through on being compassionate. The refrain from responsorial Psalm 18, “I love you Lord, my strength,” invites us to proclaim our love of God, while simultaneously affirming God as our strength. We acknowledge that only with God’s help strengthening us can we live lives of compassion and love. Reflect on how attuned you are to the demands of love and compassion for all of God’s people, most especially the weak, poor and powerless. This week seek out someone who is in need of your love, compassion and joy. Share with them God’s love and compassion. CIRCLE OF GRACE Our parish is dedicated to protecting our children and teaching them about dangerous situations and how to ask for help. To further that goal, we are happy to comply with the Diocesan requirement to offer the Circle of Grace training in our classrooms. We have a trained instructor from our parish who will present lessons to each grade of PSR on a schedule of Sundays this fall. If parents do not wish for their child to receive this training they may fill out an “Opt Out” form. A letter was mailed to each family outlining the program and it included a copy of the Opt Out form as well as the schedule of training for each grade. All volunteers with youth and children must attend one Protecting God’s Children workshop, submit to a background check and sign the policy on Ethics and Integrity in Ministry, (EIM). Pictured above are Priscilla, Milly, Anna, Sophie, and Jenna at the Bonfire, Sunday, October 19th. WELLNESS CENTER WE HAVE BEEN AROUND THE WORLD… Lessons learned from those who live the longest: Move Naturally. Be active without having to think about it. Build regular, low-intensity physical activity, into your daily routine. Include a combination of aerobic, balancing, and muscle-strengthening activities. Cut down your total calorie consumption. Painlessly cut 20% of your calories by stopping eating when your stomach is 80% full and eat slowly. Just losing 10% of your body weight helps to lower blood pressure and cholesterol. Eat more plants than meats. Avoid meat and processed foods. Genesis 1:29…”Then God said, ‘Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed: it shall be food for you.’” Drink red wine (in moderation). A daily drink or two has been associated with lower rates of heart disease. It does appear to reduce stress and the damaging effects of chronic inflammation. It also contains artery-scrubbing polyphenols that may help fight arteriosclerosis. Purpose now. Take time to see the big picture. Have a sense of purpose and learn something new. Downshift. Take time to relieve stress. Finding time for our spiritual side can create a space to slow down. Practices like yoga and meditation can also give the mind respite. Reduce the noise from TV radio and the Internet. Belong. Participate in a spiritual community. Schedule the time and just go with an open mind. Loved ones first. Make family a priority. Invest time first in your family and repeat the dividends. 6 WEEK WORKSHOP-GETTING BACK TO BETTER Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions Six consecutive Tuesday’s November 18th-December th 2:15 pm-4:00pm 30 Email [email protected] or call St. Sabina Wellness Center (816) 979-3090 SATURDAY WELLNESS SCREENINGS 8:30AM-12:00PM The 1st and 3rd weekend starting November 1st 2014 WELLNESS CENTER CLASS SCHEDULE Monday: Tuesday: Wednesday: Thursday: Friday: Saturday Yoga 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Strength & Stretch 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Zumba Gold 1:00-2:00 p.m. Gentle Yoga 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. Restorative Yoga 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. Jiu Jets 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. Beginning Stretch & Strength 1– 2 p.m. Stretch & Strength 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. Yoga 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Gentle Yoga 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. Family Zumba 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. Family Yoga 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. Exercise Machines Open 8:30-10:30 a.m. Yoga Stretch 10:30-11:30 a.m. STEWARDSHIP WORLD MISSION SUNDAY COLLECTION Thank you for your generous response to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith on World Mission Sunday. What is the difference between tolerance and mercy? Dr. Ed Hogan, a father of 6 children, answers this question while explaining how families can promote a culture of mercy, as recently called for by Pope Francis. On the MCC website you can also read a transcript of the homily given by Springfield-Cape Girardeau Bishop James Johnston and view photos from the day. Those traveling will have the opportunity to visit the communities of Cinquera and San Rafael Cedros, along with other places of significance within El Salvador. Many of you had the chance to hear Zulma speak of her experience and her thankfulness of being a scholarship student when she visited our parish in September. We are pleased that Zulma will be our translator for our delegation when we are in El Salvador. If you are interested in traveling with this delegation, please contact Kris as soon as possible. Those interested should begin application for a passport now. PRIESTHOOD SUNDAY - OCTOBER 26 This weekend, October 26, we celebrate Priesthood Sunday. The last Sunday of October is designated as Priesthood Sunday, a one-day celebration of the priesthood organized by parish lay leaders and coordinated by the USA Council of Serra International. In honor of Priesthood Sunday, we invite you to pray for our pastor, Fr. Jeff this week. PRAYER FOR FATHER JEFF STEPHAN Most gentle and loving God, we, your people, thank you for your many gifts, most especially the gift of your love and presence. We praise you for the abundant love you bestow upon us through the many loving and caring people that you send our way. As we celebrate Priesthood Sunday we thank you today, in a special way, for our pastor, Father Jeff Stephan. You have blessed him with many special gifts which he generously and willingly shares with the whole parish community. He gifts us with his passion for service to others. He challenges us with his prophetic dedication to justice. He enlivens us with his enthusiasm and creativity. We ask you to bless him as he continues to live out his baptismal call to minister to your people, as a priest, pastor, guide, father, and friend. May you bless him with good health, continued energy and enthusiasm, along with wisdom, strength and courage to continue the work of justice and peace. May his life be a continued source of blessing for all. We ask this through your Son and the Spirit, both now and forever, Amen. – BANK – of BELTON JIM’S DISCOUNT MUFFLERS MEMBER FDIC Great Service • Great Prices Ph. 816-331-4888 HARDWARE-BUILDING MATERIALS-PAINT 617 North Scott Belton, MO 64012 P.O. (Rom. 10,14).
