ENJOY “SANT JORDI”
THE DAY OF BOOKS
AND ROSES
“Sant Jordi” it’s a very special day in Catalonia,
although it’s not a holiday you can feel that it’s
not a regular day. During all day the streets are
full of books and roses that lovers exchange.
The tradition says that men should give a rose to
women and women should give a book to men.
“Sant Jordi” is Catalonia’s patron saint and this
tradition comes from his legend. It says that,
once upon a time, there was a village frightened
by a dragon. To calm him down every day a
person was chosen to feed the dragon and, one
day, the chosen one was the king’s daughter.
This is where “Sant Jordi” appeared killing the
dragon and saving the princess. And, from the
dragon’s blood, a beautiful rose grew. That’s
where the tradition of giving a rose to the loved
ones comes from.
And 23rd April is also de Day of the Book to
mark the occasion of Miguel de Cervantes and
Shakespeare death. And that’s the reason to
offer books.
Enjoy this beautiful day and take a walk
in Barcelona city center that turns into a
huge outdoor book store!
