SAINT JUNÍPERO SERRA PARISH—THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT, DEC. 13, 2015
FATHER SERRA PARISH DIRECTORY
WORSHIP
We welcome our Archbishop José Gomez to our
parish for the first time. The bronze statue should be
here on a temporary base to be blessed this Sunday.
His Excellency is also ordaining our Brother Jeyaraj
Joseph William to the transitional diaconate during
the 2:30 Mass. If all goes well, he could be ordained
a priest after six months of serving as a deacon.
One of the few doctrinal matters determined at
Vatican Council II was a clarification of Holy Orders. The theology settled upon by the Council Fathers and promulgated by Blessed Pope Paul VI is
that the sacrament consists of three levels: diaconate, presbyterate and episcopate.
The fullness of Holy Orders is found in the episcopate, bishops. That’s why one normally speaks
nowadays of “ordination” as bishop rather than
“consecration” which implies less of a real change in
the person ontologically. Priests, presbyters, are ordained to collaborate with the bishops in preaching,
and celebrating most of the sacraments, especially
the Eucharist and Penance and Reconciliation. Deacons are both permanent, who are mostly married
men, and transitory, like Brother Jeyaraj. They enjoy faculties for preaching and may formally baptize,
marry and bury people. Permanent deacons usually
hold secular jobs and are clerics “in the world”. The
primary ministry of a deacon is charitable service.
The Church always calls deacons to the priesthood. A man never goes from being a layman to
being a presbyter. This is one sign of the esteem
with which the Church holds the diaconate. As deacon, Brother Jay will assist me at most of my Masses. He will preach some times and be given the opportunity to baptize children. I will also ask him to
do some vigil services for the deceased at the local
mortuaries as well as some graveside services on
Saturdays. Since he teaches five classes at Paraclete,
his time in the parish will be somewhat limited.
Please pray for all ordained ministers, earthen
vessels that contain a treasure of great price, a share
in the sacrament of Holy Orders.
Lectors and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion
are scheduled by Anne Trabold, 992-6404.

Opportunity to be Politically Active in Faith!
Are you interested in policies at the state and
federal level that impact our religious freedoms
and protections? Your parish needs you! Father
Leo would like to form a group of parishioners
that can respond to calls to action from the
USCCB and the Archdiocese. Being a part of this
group would likely require only infrequent
meetings. The time commitment would include
occasional weekend organization of petition
signing campaigns or bulletin stuffing. If you
would like to be a part of this group, please
email Joy Densford at [email protected].
Lay Fraternity of Charles de Foucauld

Are you interested in joining a small faith community
centered on the Gospel in the spirituality of Blessed
Charles de Foucauld? We will be gathering monthly
for Eucharistic Adoration, Scripture sharing/Review
of Life, and a communal meal. Please contact Arlene Moeller at [email protected] to communicate your interest or request further information.

Aging religious need your help. In the United States today,
there are more than 33,000 senior Catholic sisters, brothers,
and religious order priests. These religious worked tirelessly
in Catholic schools, hospitals, and agencies, usually for little
to no pay. As a result, many religious communities lack adequate savings for retirement and eldercare. Your gift to today's collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious helps
provide medications, nursing care, and more. Please be

CELEBRANT SINGERS IN CONCERT!
God of comfort, these times seem so uncertain, so
scary. The world seems darker than it has in the past
and I am less sure of myself. Maybe that's a good
thing; maybe now I am turning to you with a realization that I need you so much more and that my
life is not in my own control. Let me not forget all
of those around the world who are frightened at this
moment. Help those who are victims of terrorism
and war. Be with those who have lost so much in
the past year. Hold us all in your loving arms and let
us be comforted by the strength and peace you want
to much to offer us through the birth of your son,
Jesus. Thank you for the many gifts you offer us.

niveles: diaconado, presbiterado y episcopado.

generosos. (Sobres todavía se aceptarán próxima semana.)
