“The LORD has done great things for
us; oh how happy we were!” Good
stewards demonstrate by their living
and giving that they understand God
as the source of all they are and have.
Dear Friends of Holy Spirit,
As I write this letter, I have just returned from a
five day family reunion with my
siblings and their spouses. This year we met at my
brother and sister-in-law's home outside of Philadelphia, where all gathered except my youngest brother
and his wife, who could not make it. It was a great
visit and I am glad we were able to reconnect, since
we live across the United States.
I am reading a book by Jason Evert, entitled
"Saint John Paul the Great". It is an easy book to
read and admire John Paul who suffered so much in
his early life. His mother died when he was a child
and his father died when he was in college. His only
sibling died when he was a teenager, so by the age
of 20 he had no one. He learned early to put his
trust in God, something most of us are much slower
to learn.
In particular, I think you would benefit from
Saint John Paul's thoughts on suffering and how the
suffering of one person can benefit another
person: "By embracing the many crosses of daily
life, a person not only sanctifies himself/herself, but
also releases a flood of graces for others" (Page
176). We can learn much from this for it gives
meaning to the sufferings we endure.
God's Blessings and Love,
Congratulations to

The Giving Trees
Day of the Dead Celebration
The days of the dead are truly a celebration of life!
When children dance with caricatures of death, eat
skull sugar molds and learn to respect that life is brief,
they learn there is a circle to life and not to fear death
and then are free to enjoy and appreciate every moment. Celebrating The Day of the Dead has a long history in Mexican Tradition. The Day of the dead is celebrated on November 2nd. Sometimes one hears reference to “the days of the Dead” which refers to the Days
of Oct. 31st to Nov. 2nd. Oct. 31st is Halloween or All
Hallows Eve.. Nov.1st is “el Dia de los innocents” or
the day of the children and All Saints Day. While Nov.
2nd is All Souls Day or the Day of the Dead.
During the days of the dead, the family often takes the
opportunity to visit the gravesite and
pull weeds, clean any debris and
decorate the graves of loved ones.
Often candles, flowers and the favorite foods of the deceased are placed
on the grave and the family visits,
eats, sings, and tells favorite stories
about those who have passed. In the
United States, or for those for whom
visiting the gravesite is not viable, the tradition has
been adapted. Many set up altars in their homes & often communities host a variety of events. Here at Holy
Spirit Church, our Hispanic community will be putting
together an “altar” in the west vestibule next Sat., Oct.
24th to honor and celebrate the lives of loved ones
who have passed.
Our Hispanic community have invited any parishioner
who would like to have a picture of their loved one displayed on this very beautiful altar to please bring it in a
frame into the parish office before 10/24. Please
put your name and phone number on the back of the
frame so that we can return it to you and, please, do
not submit any precious, one–of-a-kind family photos.
Copies of a picture in a frame work great for this celebration. If you have any further questions about this
celebration, please call Maria Caldera at:
317.992.7264
All Are Welcome!
The Giving trees will be going up
next weekend, Oct. 31st/Nov1st.
This seems early but all gifts
need to be collected by
November 30th. Thank you for
your generosity.
SUBSTANCE ADDICTION
MINISTRY (SAM)
For over five years, I had thought Step One was
easy: "We admitted we were powerless over alcohol
-- that our lives had become unmanageable." Then
one day, in yet another attempt to help my alcoholic
daughter, I had an epiphany.
First, I realized that I had never really admitted I
was powerless over alcohol. I had continually tried to
influence, manipulate, and change my alcoholic
daughter's behavior, rather than my own. I truly
understood that I am powerless, and that the only
behavior I can change is my own.
Second, my life had become unmanageable. I
vowed to get a life, and began to work with my
Sponsor to identify what that would mean.
Knowing this, really knowing it, is my First Step
toward serenity.

Lord, help me to be humble. Let not my stubborn
self-will stand in the way of my achieving serenity.
Before I can accomplish anything, I must accept my
need for help.
One Trumpet Needed

Padre Douglas has transferred to this new parish in
Guinope. If you have a used trumpet that you can donate or know how to obtain one, please call John Evans at: 201-4086. !Muchas Gracias!

-San Juan Pablo II
Oh Virgen María, Salud de los
enfermos, que has acompañado a
