Astormentados Quintet
is a group of young
Argentine musicians from Buenos Aires that aims to recreate some of the most
emblematic works of Astor Piazzolla, on his innovative quintet formation.
Based on the original arrangements of this great bandoneon player, yet Astormentados
give a personal touch to his musical performances.
Astormentados consists of five former students of the Academia Nacional del Tango,
Conservatorio Astor Piazzolla, Conservatorio Ciudad de Buenos Aires, and
Conservatorio Juan Manuel de Falla , who have long ago devoted their lives to music,
having several simultaneous musical projects.
In admiration for talent, dedication and work of Astor Piazzolla, is that the idea of
forming the quintet to play as possibly true to the works of Piazzolla as can be. More
precisely those of his New Tango Quintet, founded in 1960 , which is that quintet would
publish all compositions that shaped his style and is most fondly remembered till this
day.
Its members are Adolfo Trepiana on Bandoneon, Nicolas Garay on Guitar, Sara Tubbia
Ryan on Violin, Javier Arteaga on Contrabass and Juan Ignacio Esteguy on Piano.
Members
Javier Arteaga – Contrabass
Javier began studying electric bass at age 12, shortly after taking classes with the
most renowned teachers. Years later he began his studies in the municipal high school
in the province of Santa Fe, and he became part of various jazz, Bossa, Blues, Rock,
Pop and Funk ensembles where he obtained a first mention of the best bass player of
the province of Santa Fe in the year 2002.
At end of 2002 he left his native Santa Fe to arrived to Buenos Aires to undertake
various musical projects.
As a Contrabass player, he began his studies at the Academia Nacional De Tango with
the teacher Osvaldo "Chiche" Diani, and at the same time pursuing his studies at the
Conservatorio Astor Piazzolla, with Maestro Pastor Mora, eventually changing to the
Avellaneda Popular Music School in charge of Maestro Ciro Buono.
He also studied with a number of teachers in particular: Roberto Tormo, Guillermo
Delgado, Patricio Cotella, Sergio Rivas, and Tomas Martins (master classes).
He subsequently participated in various popular music ensembles (“Timotteo Quinteto
Tango”, “Orquesta Tipica Imperial”, amog many others). He played as a stable musician
in tango shows like “Piazzolla Tango”, “Su Majestad El Tango” en el Café Tortoni y
“Sabor a Tango”.
He has toured Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Turkey, Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, as
well as throughout his own country.
Actually he is part of “Diagonal Sur” and “Astormentados Quintet”.
Juan Ignacio Esteguy – Piano
He was born in Buenos Aires on May 2nd, 1983. Juan Ignacio started to study piano at
the age of 13 with Dario Kajt. Between 2001 and 2003 he took piano and music lessons at
the Conservatorio Beethoven. During the next two years he studied composition at the
Universidad Catolica Argentina, and studied piano with the pianist and composer
Nicholas Guerschberg and Master Fernando Perez; and composition, counterpoint and
harmony with Prof. Laura Baade.
In 2007 and 2008 he studied composition and arrangement with the musician and
composer Julián Hasse. In 2008 he graduated into a pianist with expertise in tango at
the Conservatorio Argentino Galvan (“National Tango Academy”) studying, among
others, with Juan Trepiana, Oscar De Elia, Pepe Motta and Anibal Arias.
He was the pianist, arranger and musical director of "Vanguardia Vieja". Between 2013
and 2014 he played in the “Orquesta tipica Andariega” touring Italy, Denmark,
Switzerland, Sweden and Netherlands.
As a sessionist he took part in various discs and musical projects of diverse
Argentinean music genres. He accompanied many singers playing, arranging and
directing.
He is graduated in Tango and Folklore at the Conservatorio Manuel de Falla, studying
with: Nicolás Ledesma, Pablo Fraguela, Lilián Saba, Marcelo Lodigiani and Juan Falú
as well as perfecting his piano techinque with Susana Agrest.
Actually he plays the piano in “Ezequiel Uhart Quintet” (getting ready to the second
European tour of the quintet in 2016) and “Astormentados Quintet”
Nicolás Garay – Acoustic Guitar
Born in Buenos Aires January 3, 1983. He has a degree on guitar “Astor Piazzolla
Consevatory” where he studied with Walter Ujaldon, Cesar Castillo, José Luis Juri,
Edgar Ferrer, Susana Duran, Luis Caparra and Gabriela Lodigiani. In that consevatory
he is, since 2009, teacher assistant in the course named“Popular harmony on guitar”
dictated by Ricardo Ozan.
As an academic complement he studied piano with Mono Fontana, Lolo Micucci, Gustavo
Liamgot and Matías Mormandi: and guitar with con Ricardo Ozan, Ricardo Lew and Renzo
Baltuzi.
He was part of music groups like Globo, Astormentados, Ese Invierno Sombrío y
Franzisco Alegre. He toured to España, Uruguay, Chile, México and almost all Argentina
provinces. He played in stages like Café Tortoni, Estadio Luna Park, Lollapalooza
2014, Personal Fest, Café Vinilo, Torcuatto Tasso, 36 Billares, Café Homero Manzi,
Teatro Alvear, Teatro Empire, La Trastienda, Niceto, Roxy Bar, among others.
In 2009 he recorded his first CD “Un viaje de Ida” and in 2014 his second one
“Italpark”, both of them full of compositions wich match with audiovisual scenes. As
a sesionist he took part of many groups: Gonzalo Aloras, Ulises Butrón, Lolo Micucci,
María José Demare, Daniela Spalla, “Francisca y los Exploradores” and Juan Ingaramo.
As a pianist he accompanies contemporary dancing studies in “U.N.A.”.
He composed music for theather plays like “Océano”, “Una condecoración de lindas
cintas”, “La Ventana” y “La Ropa”. He also colaborated with four songs of his own
writing for the film “Arriba los que luchan” (2014, documentary of the life of Jorge
Masetti).
He has a degree on “Sound and recording technician” (TMA school).
He teaches guitar since 2001 and piano since 2008. And he has given harmony, piano and
guitar lessons in IMGEL and MANNY’s music schools.
Sara Tubbia Ryan – Violin
Sara was born on 4th of june, 1992, on Venado Tuerto, Santa Fe province. She started
studying violin at the age of 8 in the “taller municipal de violín y viola” with
master Walter Martínez.
On 2008 she was teacher assistant in ”taller municipal” and she started giving clases
at “Astor Piazzolla y Sibal Arte” music school. After that, in 2010, she became former
teacher in “taller Municipal de violin”.
In the year 2010 she continues her formation with master Roberto Calomarde, in
Capital Federal; with whom she continues studying actually individually and in the
“Conservatorio Superior de Música de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires Astor Piazzolla”.
One year after that she moved to Capital Federal. She took part in various youth
symphonic orchestras (Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil Nacional, directed by Master Mario
Benzecry, among others) playing in the most important concert halls of the city (Teatro
Colón, Salón Dorado, Auditorio Amijai, Auditorio de Facultad de Derecho, Usina del
Arte, Auditorio de Belgrano).
During 2012 she was violin teacher in the school of music “Arte Vivo”, under the
direction of the pianist and teacher Alicia Cipolla, in Olivos, Buenos Aires. Since
2013 she is one of the violins of “Orquesta Típica de tango Andariega”, touring
Europe every year.
On 2014 she took a degree in violin “Trayecto artístico Profesional”, at the
Conservatorio Superior de Música de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires Astor Piazzolla, where
she continues a superior career “Profesorado en música de Cámara”.
Actually she is studying a degree in Orchestal Academy at “Instituto Superior de las
Artes del Teatro Colón” (taking clases with masters Stanimir Todorov, Freddy Varela
Montero, Hernán Briático, etc).
Adolfo Trepiana – Bandoneón
He was born in Buenos Aires on February 2nd, 1984. He started studying music at the
age of 12, playing guitar, many years later he started studying bandoneón with
masters Carlos Lazzari, Osvaldo Montes and Nestor Marconi. He studied harmony with
masters Juan Trepiana and Julián Peralta.
In 2005 he took a degree as an arranger musician specialized in tango music at
"Conservatorio de Estilos Argentino Galván" in the National Tango Academy.
Since 2006 he works as music teacher, in “conservatorio de Estilos Argentino Galván”,
“La escuela de Tango Orlando Goñi”, and giving individual lessons.
As a bandoneón player he took part of the following music groups: Astillero,
Astormentados, Orquesta Tipica La Juan Darienzo, Orquesta Tipica Julian Peralta, 8cho,
Orquesta de Musica Nacional de Musica Argentina Juan de Dios Filiberto, Quinteto Juan
Trepiana, Trio Omar Mollo, Trio Maria Jose Demare, Sexteto Roberto Siri, Orquesta La
Brava, Orquesta Tipica Di Salvo, among others. He was part of 20 international tours
(North America, Europe and Asia) giving concerts at the most important music festivals
of the world (Montreal Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz, London Jazz Festival, Seoul Jazz
Festival, CrossCulture).
He was musician of 8cho company
(Aereal dance) during season 2012
in Broadway, New York.
He
played

seasons 2013 and 2014.
As part of “La Juan Darienzo”
orchestra he toured Japan and
Taiwan for 3 months with “Min-On
Concert Association” in 2015.
