Whiting/Robertsdale Faith Community Page 2 HONOR THE PRECIOUS BLOOD Saint Paul asks: “The blessing cup which we bless, is it not a sharing in the blood of Christ?” (1 Corinthians 10:15-16) June 28, 2015 WORSHIP AND SPIRITUALITY Monday, June 29, Sts. Peter & Paul. Apostles Acts 12:1-11; 2 Tm 4:6-8, 17-18; Mt 16:13-9 7:00 am †Annette Timko (SJB) Tuesday, June 30, First Martyrs of Holy Roman Church During the Last Supper, the evening before He died, Jesus took the cup of wine and offered it. In the hands of Jesus that cup was a cup of blessing, a cup of the new and everlasting covenant, the cup that unites us with God and with one another as family. Gn 19:15-29; Mt 8:3-27 At that super, Jesus took the cup of suffering he experienced in the Agony in the Garden and transformed it into a cup of blessing. That’s the mystery of the Eucharist. Thursday, July 2, Weekday in Ordinary Time Henri Nouwen in his book “Can You Drink The Cup?” writes: Jesus died for us so that we might live. He poured out His Blood for us so that we may find new life. He gave Himself away for us, so that we can live as his family. He became for us food and drink so that we can be fed for everlasting life.” And what a blessing that as and still is for us. That is what Jesus meant when He took the cup at the Last Supper and said: “This is the new covenant in the blood poured out for you.” (Luke 22:20) This is what Jesus wants us to realize each time we approach the altar to drink from the Communion Cup. Amen! I believe! CARING FOR CREATION Pope Francis is expected to release his much anticipated encyclical on the environment at the end of June. How will you and our Catholic Community respond to this call to care for creation? At home try to reduce your electric and water consumption and do recycle paper, plastic, glass and metal. Come help at St. John by lending a hand at weeding and picking up litter around the premises. Many hands make light work. Bring your work gloves, a bucket and a friend to help with just one little space where weeds have rapidly multiplied. Together we can make a big difference! PASTORAL STAFF AND MINISTRIES Rev. In and around Pasar Ikan, you can find hundreds of shanty houses on the bank of the harbor and its many canals. The Pasar Ikan community lives in these small crowded houses. Most of the adults make a living at the fish market selling fish, water or ice. One day, I attended a funeral service at the nearby graveyard. In the graveyard, there were tens of recently dug holes. It caught my attention that the holes were dug very close to each other. When the people lowered the coffin into the grave, they had to watch their steps very carefully. Some looked so worried with strained faces. I asked spontaneously, “Why are these holes dug so close together?” I heard one old woman reply softly, “We are poor people. We live in small narrow houses and when we die it is the same.” Another women commented, “The world is narrow, and so is the heaven.” That comment struck me. Is that what God really promised to us? I tried to reiterate what Jesus said: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God, have faith also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you. I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be.” (John 14: 1-3) These words emphasized what we have to know: Death is not an isolation that cuts all relationships and togetherness between us and Jesus Christ. Death is a journey. We are coming back to the Father’s house, and there are many dwelling places that can accommodate all people. Andar Ismail Indonesia In June, the Peace and Social Justice Commission ask the Catholic Cluster Community to support the Migrant workers who labor on the farms around northwest Indiana.
