For more information on this event, please call 843-422-2083 or visit www.compassionatefriends.org One of the most memorable questions I have ever been asked came out of a conversation with a spiritual director. During my marriage-preparation retreat, he asked about the upcoming wedding. I told him about all the preparations and how I felt like I was on top of things. He gently said, “I know you are prepared, but are you ready?” It was the first time I really thought about the difference. We were certainly prepared. The flowers had been ordered, the ceremony set, and the caterer knew exactly what we wanted. We were in control. But being ready for the great unknown of marriage, a lifelong vocation, was another thing altogether. Being ready suggested that we won’t always be in control and that, no matter what happens, we were in it for life and would face whatever comes together. The prophet Isaiah describes John the Baptist as the one who prepares the way of the Lord. He will do this by preaching to and baptizing those who come to him. The preparation for the coming Messiah is in his hands. He poses the question, “Are you ready for the one who is to come?” Thinking beyond our religious practices and Christmas preparations, what does that really mean for us? Maybe this year it means looking into our own hearts for the longing for Christ. Perhaps we will make a room for him in our busy lives and our busier thoughts. We might even stop our preparations long enough to remember just who is coming and invite him in. Are you ready? (Dan. 12, 3b) ORACIÓN ENCENDER LA VELA LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Martes: Miércoles: Jueves: Viernes: Sábado: Domingo: Is 35:1-10; Sal 85 (84):9-14; Lc 5:17-26 Gén 3:9-15, 20; Sal 98 (97):1-4; Ef 1:3-6, 11-12; Lc 1:26-38 Is 40:25-31; Sal 103 (102):1-4, 8, 10; Mt 11:28-30 Is 41:13-20; Sal 145:1, 9-13ab; Mt 11:1115 Is 48:17-19; Sal 1:1-4, 6; Mt 11:16-19 Zac 2:14-17 o Ap 11:19a; 12:1-6a, 10ab; Jdt 13:18bcde, 19; Lc 1:26-38 o Lc 1:39-47, o cualquier lectura del Común de la Santísima María Virgen Sof 3:14-18a; Is 12:2-3, 4, 5-6; Fil 4:4-7; Lc 3:10-18 Los profetas mantenían encendida la esperanza de Israel. —Henry Ward Beecher FAITH FORMATION Safe Environment Program The Safe Environment Program is required for Parish volunteers working with youth or vulnerable adults. Bishop Guglielmone has assigned one parish in each Deanery to have a holy door. St. Gregory the Great is honored to be that parish for the Beaufort Deanery. On Sunday, December 13, Monsignor Cellini will officially open the newly created Holy Doors at a ceremony at 12:30 p.m. Please see the schedule below. From December 13, 2015 through November 20, 2016, the center holy door will be for entry to the church only. When exiting the church, you may use the 2 sets of double doors on each side of the center door or the southern exit at the front of the church near the Adoration Chapel. (In the case of an emergency only, exiting through the center doors will be permitted.) Schedule for December 13 opening: 11:00 Mass (as normally scheduled) 12:00 – 12:30 Reception 12:30 Blessing Rite and Opening of the Holy Door of Mercy 12:35 Procession into Church 12:45 Mass (as normally scheduled) Many parishioners have come together to make this possible, and we would like to express our appreciation especially to: Jose Prado for project coordination, Members of our Hispanic community for design and construction, Brian Laing of Southeast Rails and Screen for design and production of the metal gate, and Richard Fagon for the painting above the doorway. Thank you for your hard work and dedication to our parish! Year of Mercy The Role of the Church Mercy is the foundation of the Church’s life. All of her pastoral activity should be caught up in the tenderness she makes present to believers; nothing in her preaching and in her witness to the world can be lacking in mercy. The Church’s very credibility is seen in how she shows merciful and compassionate love. The Church “has an endless desire to show mercy.” Perhaps we have long since forgotten how to show and live the way of mercy. The temptation, on the one hand, to focus exclusively on justice made us forget that this is only the first, albeit necessary and indispensable step. But the Church needs to go beyond and strive for a higher and more important goal. On the other hand, sad to say, we must admit that the practice of mercy is waning in the wider culture. In some cases the word seems to have dropped out of use. However, without a witness to mercy, life becomes fruitless and sterile, as if sequestered in a barren desert. The time has come for the Church to take up the joyful call to mercy once more. It is time to return to the basics and to bear the weaknesses and struggles of our brothers and sisters. Mercy is the force that reawakens us to new life and instils in us the courage to look to the future with hope. The Church is commissioned to announce the mercy of God, the beating heart of the Gospel, which in its own way must penetrate the heart and mind of every person. The Spouse of Christ must pattern her behavior after the Son of God who went out to everyone without exception. In the present day, as the Church is charged with the task of the new evangelization, the theme of mercy needs to be proposed again and again with new enthusiasm and renewed pastoral action. It is absolutely essential for the Church and for the credibility of her message that she herself live and testify to mercy. Her language and her gestures must transmit mercy, so as to touch the hearts of all people and inspire them once more to find the road that leads to the Father. The Church’s first truth is the love of Christ. The Church makes herself a servant of this love and mediates it to all people: a love that forgives and expresses itself in the gift of oneself. Consequently, wherever the Church is present, the mercy of the Father must be evident. In our parishes, communities, associations and movements, in a word, wherever there are Christians, everyone should find an oasis of mercy.
