Within the Church, that mission is received by us at our Baptism and then carried out through, with, and in Christ Whose Real Presence amongst us will bring that mission to completion! Once a year, our mission as Catholics brings us to the Holy Season of Lent. “Lent” writes Pope Francis in his 2015 Message for Lent, “is a time of renewal for the whole Church, for each communities and every believer. Above all” he says, “it is a “time of grace” (II Cor vi:2). That grace, freely offered by God (and please God freely and gratefully received by us), sends us through renewed efforts of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving into the world to carry out the mission where God will bring it to completion! The renewal that I have witnessed during the first four weeks of Lent has been truly inspirational! It can be witnessed in the Perpetual Adoration Chapel where visitors can be found spending time with Jesus 24 hours a day; 7 days a week! It can be witnessed in our absolutely beautiful church at any one of our seven Sunday Masses or our three daily Masses (7:30 A.M., 9:00 A.M., 12:10 P.M.)! It can be witnessed in the Sunday Offertory basket where 25 cents more a week continues to add up in unprecedented ways! It can be witnessed anywhere and everywhere parishioners of Our Holy Redeemer go! Yes, through the parishioners of Our Holy Redeemer, the Real Presence of Christ is renewing our Parish and the Village of Freeport (remember to vote on 19 March) as well. Please keep that renewal going! Come home for our annual Parish Mission (16, 17, 18 March) and discover the Way to carry out the Mission from God that is incomplete without you! Some Reminders During the Holy Season of Lent ABSTINENCE (>14) FAST (18-59) All Catholics who have reached their th 14 year are bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. All Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This means limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Two other light meals may be taken during the day. STATIONS OF THE CROSS EVERY FRIDAY DURING LENT 7:30 P.M. in English 8:30 P.M. in Spanish You came home for Mass on Ash Wednesday; why not come home for Mass every Wednesday? 7:30 A.M., 9:00 A.M., 12:10 P.M. NOW A WORD FROM OUR SAINTS (ABOUT THE FAMILY) APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION FAMILIARIS CONSORTIO OF POPE JOHN PAUL II TO THE EPISCOPATE TO THE CLERGY AND TO THE FAITHFUL OF THE WHOLE CATHOLIC CHURCH ON THE ROLE OF THE CHRISTIAN FAMILY IN THE MODERN WORLD (22 November 1981) PART THREE THE ROLE OF THE CHRISTIAN FAMILY IV - SHARING IN THE LIFE AND MISSION OF THE CHURCH A Specific and Original Ecclesial Role 50. The Christian family is called upon to take part actively and responsibly in the mission of the Church in a way that is original and specific, by placing itself, in what it is and what it does as an "intimate community of life and love," at the service of the Church and of society. Since the Christian family is a community in which the relationships are renewed by Christ through faith and the sacraments, the family's sharing in the Church's mission should follow a community pattern: the spouses together as a couple, the parents and children as a family, must live their service to the Church and to the world. They must be "of one heart and soul" in faith, through the shared apostolic zeal that animates th em, and through their shared commitment to works of service to the ecclesial and civil communities. The Christian family also builds up the Kingdom of God in history through the everyday realities that concern and distinguish its state of life. It is thus in the love between husband and wife and between the members of the family-a love lived out in all its extraordinary richness of values and demands: totality, oneness, fidelity and fruitfulness that the Christian family's participation in the prophetic, priestly and kingly mission of Jesus Christ and of His Church finds expression and realization. Therefore, love and life constitute the nucleus of the saving mission of the Christian family in the Church and for the Church. The Second Vatican Council recalls this fact when it writes: "Families will share their spiritual riches generously with other families too. Thus the Christian family, which springs from marriage as a reflection of the loving covenant uniting Christ with the Church, and as a participation in that covenant will manifest to all people the Savior's living presence in the world, and the genuine nature of the Church. This the family will do by the mutual love of the spouses, by their generous fruitfulness, their solidarity and faithfulness, and by the loving way in which all the members of the family work together." (To be continued next week …) Please Pray for Our Priests…, O God, Who made Your Only Begotten Son eternal High Priest, grant that those He has chosen as ministers and stewards of Your mysteries may be found faithful in carrying out the ministry they have received. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. The teachers take turns and present the young men with a quote, a prayer, a collection of math formulas, pictures of famous art works, referee signals from the NFL, a poem, or, as just happened, an Irish blessing. Each student is to commit the text or image presented to memory, and then find a time during the week prior to Friday’s Morning Assembly to recite in the presence of the teacher who made the assignment what he has memorized. Earlier this month we had a week when school was cancelled one day because of snow and on two other days the arrival of students from some public school districts was delayed by two hours as a consequence of the inclement weather. The concession was that the deadline for reciting the blessing was extended to noon on Friday, just prior to going to the parish Mass. It was great to see that every student successfully completed the assignment despite the irregularity in the school schedule. If you encounter any of the De La Salle students and ask him if he knows the Irish Blessing that begins “May the road rise up to meet you” he will impart that blessing on you! Happy Saint Patrick’s Day! More than likely, if you use Parish Envelopes to make your offering, you will place “Sunday-missed” envelopes in the Offertory basket the next time you attend Mass. If you don’t use envelopes, it is more than likely that your Sunday-missed offering will remain missing. It is not that you intentionally choose to give Our Holy Redeemer less, it’s just hard to intentionally give to Our Holy Redeemer what you think is more. “Stop thinking”; use envelopes or use E-Giving! This verse has been called the Gospel in miniature, and also, the heart of the Gospel. It has been said that it is so simple that even a child can understand it, and yet at the same time so deep that a life study could not exhaust the richness of its meaning. Some wonder if God cares. This verse says it all. Yes, He does! He loves us! Do you realize how much you are loved? Look at the Cross. God gives us His only Son so that we may have eternal life. God was willing to surrender His only Son to show us how much He loves us. How should we respond to these words? How can we love God back in the same way? We can because “the love of God has been poured out in our hearts”. (See Romans 5,5) Take as an example the lives of love of the Saints that went before us, and above all the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in whose life we see exemplified the love of God in action. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Grant, we pray, Almighty God, that by Saint Joseph’s intercession Your Church may constantly watch over the unfolding of the mysteries of human salvation, whose beginnings You entrusted to his faithful care. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. During the Holy Season of Lent, let us pray for the Canonization of Venerable Father Anthony Vincent Gallo so that he may in turn give our Christian brethren in Iraq the heroic virtue to endure their plight. “O Most Holy Trinity, Who deigned to raise Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo to the Priesthood, and endowed him with precious gifts, especially a burning love for suffering and immolation, we humbly beseech You, if it be Your Will, that he may be glorified on earth, and that we may obtain through his intercession the particular grace (heroic virtue for Christian Iraqis) which we are asking for with living faith. Amen. Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA) was founded by the Holy Father to share the love of Christ with the poor and the churches in the East. Your prayers and generous financial support will help Pope Francis to build up the church, affirm human dignity, alleviate poverty, encourage dialogue and inspire hope. Thank you! The Holy Eucharist needs to be: firmly believed, devoutly celebrated, and intensely lived in our lives. Our Holy Redeemer Parish Mission 16, 17, 18, March 2015 9:00 A.M. and 7:30 P.M. Rev. William Fickel, S.S.S. Three Days and Three Expressions of Living the Eucharist We need to become what we receive, ‘The Body of Christ’ Encounter God’s love for you in the Eucharist! Day 1 - 16 March: Deepen your personal love for the Eucharist and the celebration of the Mass. Day 2 - 17 March: Acquire a deeper appreciation of the gift the Eucharist is in living your daily life. Day 3 - 18 March: Lay the foundation for a change of your life when you live the love you receive. Saint Peter Julian Eymard said, “This divine fire that is the Eucharist…the sparks of this Eucharistic fire are all those who love Jesus Christ. True love wants the glory of the beloved. The Eucharist is the reign of Jesus Christ in the world and above all in the hearts of all God’s children. This is the beautiful, delightful mission is ours, to be people of Eucharistic love.”
