Saint John the Evangelist
“Welcome Jesus at Christmas time, not in a cold
manger of our heart ... but warm with love for
one another!” Mother Teresa
... Our Christmas celebrations begin on Thursday
(24), Christmas Eve, with two Children’s Masses,
one at 4:00pm, led by our Saint John School children, and a second at 6:00pm led by our children
from Religious Education. We have a Family Mass
at 8:00pm, with the ‘Midnight Mass’ at 11:00pm,
preceded by a Choral Celebration at 10:30pm.
... On Friday (25), Christmas Day, our Masses are
at 7:30am, 9:00am, 10:30am, and 12:00pm
(Spanish). Please note, there will be no 5:00pm
Mass on Christmas Day! Christ is born!
... The religious Christmas season extends from
Christmas Eve (24), through the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, on Sunday, January (10).
... Saturday (26) is the feast of Saint Stephen, one
of the seven deacons of the Acts of the Apostles, and
the first martyr!
... Heartfelt thanks to all of our priests who assisted at our Parish Reconciliation Service on
Monday (14)! And to Rosella and Rosanne Greco,
Greg Picone, Andrea Norman, and Matt and Carol
Williamson, who served up a delicious dinner for
all! Forgiveness and freedom!
... Our church Christmas Flowers are a wonderful
way to honor our loved ones, living and deceased,
over the Christmas season. Special envelopes are
still available in the back of the church.
... John of Kanty died in 1473, in Cracow, Poland.
A scholar, he was noted for his austerity, simplicity
and charity toward the poor. The story is told that
once John was accosted by robbers who took his
money. They asked if he had any more and he replied in the negative. When they had gone he discovered some coins sewn in his cloak, ran after the
robbers, and gave them the money. They were so
amazed that they gave back what they had taken.
His feast day is this Wednesday (23).
... John Derrico, from our Saint Vincent DePaul Society, and his great team, distributed over 150
Christmas Baskets to our needy families on Saturday (19), with the support and assistance of so
many! ‘Thank you’ for all you make possible.
... Our bulletin cover this week is a photo of the
stained-glass window, donated by John and Adela
Stanton to our old Saint John Church in 1946. All
the stained glass windows from the old church now
adorn our Parish Office Conference Room!
December 20, 2015
... Monsignor Ray Moore served as Pastor of Saint
John from 1969 to 1974, and assisted here in his retirement years in the late 1990’s. He was a great
advocate for the poor and the immigrant. Sunday
(20) is the 14th Anniversary of his death. May he
truly rest in peace.
... Congratulations to our neighbor, Saint Thomas
More, Oceanside, on the dedication of their beautiful new church on Wednesday (16). The main
door there has been designated as the ‘Holy Door
of Mercy’ for the North County, in this Jubilee Year!
That’s at 1450 S Melrose Drive, Oceanside!
... Our youth are preparing and serving a delicious
Pancake Breakfast in our Hall today (20). All
funds will go towards their ‘Building a home for a
needy family in Tijuana’ project. Great cause, good
food, and mighty people.
... Julie Marner and Burundi Friends International have fresh and tasty Burundi coffee available
for us to purchase at the gazebo today (20).
... Please remember to give generously to the special collection last weekend (13) for the Retirement
Fund for our Religious … Priests, Brothers and
Sisters. Special envelopes are still available.
... Liz Beiner and our RCIA team welcome adults
who are interested in becoming Catholic. Join
them each Tuesday at 7:00pm in the Hall!
… Our Religious Ed, Junior-High ‘Faithways’ and
Saint John School children return to the classroom
on Monday (4)! Enjoy!
… 376 families contributed a total of $18,062.00
this past weekend (13), while a further 108 families
contributed $4,112.56 ‘Online’! Thank you!
... Need to know more? Why not visit our website
at www.saintjohnencinitas.org and our school website at saintjohnschool.com
... Our Knights of Columbus still have a few great
Christmas Trees for sale, at bargain prices, on our
lower parking lot. All the proceeds go to charity.
... Our Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament resumes on Saturday (26), after the 8:00am Mass,
and continues 24 hours a day, seven days a week,
except for Sundays from 7:00am to 6:00pm. Come
along and spend some quiet time with the Lord!
... Next Sunday (27) we celebrate the feast of the
Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph.
... Be sure to keep Christ in Christmas!
... “You better watch out ... you better not cry ... a
greater than Santa is coming by!” A very ‘Happy
Christmas’ to all!

Many of our most treasured traditions link the liturgy
of the church with the hearth of the home. The food on
the table at certain feasts and fasts helps to extend the
mystery into everyday life. Tonight, for example, many
families of Italian heritage, especially those with links to
the south of Italy, will settle down to the “Feast of the
Seven Fishes,” or La Vigilia. It is a command performance for the whole family, as the saying goes: Natale con
I tuui, Pasqua conchi vuoi, or “Christmas with your
family, Easter with whomever you wish.” Seven different fish, some say one for each day of Mary and Joseph’s
journey to Bethlehem, others say one for each sacrament, or one for each day of creation, are served. Eel and
shrimp, lobster and crab, calamari, pasta with clam
sauce, flounder and hake all abound, but most especially
baccala, dried salted cod. Why? Many say that it is a way
to pay homage to the beasts of the stable who witnessed
the holy birth and relinquished their manger to make way
for God. Tonight, if someone asks you to “pass the
shrimp,” you’ll be able to shed a little light on a menu
that is a delicious treasure in our tradition!

Saint John the Evangelist
UN ORDEN NUEVO
“Oh, pequeña aldea de Belén”; un clérigo de
Filadelfia llamado Phillips Brooks escribió este
popular villancico a mediados de los 1800, pero el
profeta Miqueas hubiera podido hacerlo primero.
