Page 2 First Sunday of Advent Advent and Redemption The future is in God’s hands and God will bring it to fulfillment. What we do know is the outcome (God comes with redemption) and how it is achieved (through intimacy with Christ). Advent is a special liturgical season which begins with looking to the future, comes to a climax in looking to the past, and bears fruit in the present. Advent is a season when we bring to mind and celebrate the three comings of Christ and redemption. Christ’s first coming (which we celebrate on Christmas) fulfilled the Old Testament prophecies that God’s Messiah would come to restore all things new. Christ’s birth as the incarnate Son fulfilled these promises. Jesus’ public ministry showed us how God’s new reign would come about: by repenting and believing in the Gospel. His death and resurrection assured us that salvation is at hand, but it is only at Christ’s Second Coming that God’s glory and justice will be fully revealed. We find ourselves in an age straddling the first and second comings of Christ, at a time when we need to be strengthened now. The third coming of Christ is right now, when Christ comes, first and foremost, in sacraments but no less through each other. Our Advent vigilance and waiting does not just look back to the first coming or forward to the Second Coming. The first coming bears fruit and the Second Coming is not frightening to the extent that our vigilance and waiting is in the here and now, recognizing Christ in the many sacramental comings in our everyday lives, exchanging a holy love that makes us whole. —Living Liturgy For us Catholics, the new Liturgical Year commences with the first Sunday of Advent. In this new liturgical year, the Church not only wishes to indicate the beginning of a period, but the beginning of a renewed commitment to the faith by all those who follow Christ, the Lord. This time of prayer and path of penance that is so powerful, rich and intense, endeavors to give us a renewed impetus to truly welcome the message of the One who was incarnated for us. In fact, the entire Liturgy of the Advent Season, will spur us to an awakening in our Christian life and will put us in a ‘vigilant’ disposition, to wait for Our Lord Jesus who is coming. November 29, 2015 Advent Penance Service Tuesday, December 1st 6pm As with any great feast, there comes preparation. What better way than to come together as a community to “prepare a way for the Lord.” In Pope Francis’ letter announcing the Jubilee of the Year of Mercy that will begin in December, he said this: “With the approach of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy I would like to focus on several points which I believe require attention to enable the celebration of the Holy Year to be for all believers a true moment of encounter with the mercy of God. It is indeed my wish that the Jubilee be a living experience of the closeness of the Father, whose tenderness is almost tangible, so that the faith of every believer may be strengthened and thus testimony to it be ever more effective...It is important that this moment be linked, first and foremost, to the Sacrament of Reconciliation and to the celebration of the Holy Eucharist with a reflection on mercy.” The Sacrament of Reconciliation is one of the most unique and beautiful aspects of Catholicism. Jesus Christ, in His abundant love and mercy, established this sacrament so that we as sinners can obtain forgiveness for our sins and reconcile with God and the Church. The sacrament “washes us clean,” and renews us in Christ. As we begin our Advent journey, we invite you to experience God’s mercy and love for yourself. God loves us – all of us – no matter how great our sins. He wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater than our sin, so that we will put our trust in Him and that we all will come to share His joy. The graces of His mercy are dependent upon our trust, so that the more we trust in Jesus, the more graces and blessings we will receive. Join us for our Advent Penance Service. Father Mike and visiting priests will hear confessions after a brief liturgy of the Word. Altar Society Meeting Wednesday, December 2nd 12:00pm-2:00pm in the Hall All women of the parish are invited to attend this luncheon meeting. This year instead of collecting toys we will be collecting NEW blankets—any size—for the Trinitarians of Mary who work with the poor in Tecate, Mexico. Their goal is to deliver the blankets on the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12th. To make sure they receive the blankets in time, please bring your donations to the Parish Office by Wednesday, December 9th. Thank you for your support! December 8, 2015 is a special day for many reasons: It’s the Feastday of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Join us for Mass for this holy day of obligation at 8:30am or at 6pm. It’s also the date of our next prayer class. We’ll have a special guest speaker who will tell us about “centering prayer” and give us a chance to give it a try. We’ll meet at 10am in the Parish Hall. It’s also the first day of the Jubilee Year of Mercy called for by Pope Francis. And if that wasn't enough, it’s the date that we’re blessed to welcome Our Lady of Peace teacher and parishioner, Donna Allen, back to talk about the Gospel of Luke after the 6pm Mass. She’ll talk about how well the Gospel of Luke ties into the Year of Mercy and also give us a look at Luke’s infancy narratives so that we’ll be more prepared to hear them in the coming weeks during our Advent and Christmas Masses. Page 5 First Sunday of Advent Preparing for the YEAR of MERCY The word "Iubilaeum," Latin for Jubilee, is seen on the Holy Door at the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome. The Holy Doors of Rome's four papal basilicas will be opened during the Holy Year of Mercy, which begins December 8th. Kid’s Corner November 29, 2015 Pope Francis chose December 8, 2015, to open the Year of Mercy because that day marks the fiftieth anniversary of the closing of Vatican II. Just as the Council looked to renew the church, Francis is proclaiming that mercy is the key to the church's continuing renewal in this 'new phase of her history.' Francis called mercy 'the very foundation of the church's life and credibility,' and said, 'Wherever there are Christians, everyone should find an oasis of mercy'. So there is no better way to spend Advent, the beginning of the new liturgical year, than to let thoughts of mercy fill our hearts and minds and to let mercy grow in our hearts. 'Mercy' means to come to the aid of another out of a sense of relationship. Advent means 'coming' or 'arrival' - so the focus of the season is on waiting. If we put mercy and Advent together, then we are waiting for all the individuals and nations on earth to grow into a kind of relationship with each other that will encourage mutual help instead of competition and conflict. Then the kingdom of God will be established! This is an active waiting. We 'have mercy' on one another by working to bring it about. The Holy Year will end next year on the feast of Christ the King, whom Francis asks 'to pour out his mercy, so that everyone may work together to build a brighter future'. Take some time during these Advent days think about how extending mercy to those in your life will help bring about the kingdom of God. Thank You! Thank you for your donations of food and Von’s gift cards for the parish Food Pantry’s Thanksgiving bags for the needy of our parish and community. We were able to put together over 40 bags with your generous donations. Thank you! The Year of St. Luke In the new Liturgical year that begins today, the Church meditates on the Gospel of Luke and uses it for most of the Sunday Gospel readings. Luke tells the story of Jesus of Nazareth as a mighty prophet and Savior of the world in fulfillment of Old Testament expectations. Luke also emphasizes Jesus as a person dedicated to prayer. He begins with Jesus' virginal conception and birth, and follows Jesus through his public ministry to his passion, death, resurrection, and ascension into heaven—all under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
