technical characteristics
TÉCNICAS DE COLOCACIÓN Y MATERIALES DE AGARRE
Al tratarse de baldosas con muy baja capacidad de absorción de agua, es imprescindible la utilización de materiales de agarre compatibles
con esa baja porosidad,
la técnica de colocación adecuada es la capa fina, con adhesivos adecuados a la porosidad abierta de la baldosa y compatibles con el
soporte de colocación. En aplicaciones no residenciales es recomendable la utilización de adhesivos cementosos de alto contenido en
resinas poliméricas, adhesivos en dispersión o adhesivos de reacción, según los requerimientos del soporte y las condiciones ambientales.
Este planteamiento se hace extensible a los materiales de rejuntado, para los que se exigirá habitualmente elasticidad y altas resistencias
mecánicas y químicas.
En cualquier caso, altos niveles de adherencia, flexibilidad y buen comportamiento frente al agua pueden ser exigencias comunes, a las que
habrá que agregar en aplicaciones industriales una elevada resistencia química. Este planteamiento se hace extensible a los materiales de
rejuntado, para los que se exigirá habitualmente altas resistencias mecánicas y químicas.
Para el correcto empleo del material de agarre, hay se seguir las instrucciones del fabricante del mismo modo en cuanto a preparación y
aplicación, respetando los tiempos indicados.
Dada la baja absorción de agua del gres porcelánico esmaltado, que retrasa el secado del material de agarre utilizado, se recomienda
esperar 48-72 horas antes de hacer uso normal del pavimento.
MANTENIMIENTO DURANTE LOS TRABAJOS DE EJECUCIÓN
Dado que el pavimento no es el último elemento a colocar en una obra, será necesario una vez instalado darle una adecuada protección
frente a posibles daños que pudieran ocasionar trabajos posteriores, para lo cual deberá cubrirse con cartón, plásticos gruesos o con una
capa de serrín.
LIMPIEZA INICIAL DESPUÉS DE HABER COLOCADO LOS AZULEJOS
Los restos de suciedad que se generan tras la puesta en obra se eliminarán fácilmente con un desincrustante
comercial o, en su defecto, con un detergente de base ácida, si bien deberá tenerse en cuenta la resistencia química indicada por el
fabricante de las baldosas, teniéndose en cuenta las siguientes consideraciones:
* Nunca debe efectuarse una limpieza ácida sobre pavimentos recién instalados, por que el ácido reacciona con el cemento no fraguado,
pudiendo deteriorar las juntas o depositar compuestos insolubles sobre su superficie.
* Es conveniente impregnar la superficie con agua limpia previamente a cualquier tratamiento químico, previniendo así la posible absorción
de los agentes utilizados por el material de rejuntado, y aclarar con agua inmediatamente después del tratamiento para eliminar los restos
de productos químicos.
* No deben utilizarse espátulas metálicas ni estropajos abrasivos, siendo adecuadas las esponjas preferentemente naturales.
* Este tipo de operaciones deben ser realizadas por el personal experimentado, teniendo en cuenta las características de las baldosas y
las recomendaciones del fabricante.
CUIDADO ORDINARIO
La limpieza cotidiana de las baldosas de gres es particularmente simple, ya que únicamente se requiere agua limpia a la que puede
añadirse un detergente de base alcalina.
No se recomienda el uso de ceras, aceites o productos similares, ya que la nula porosidad de la pieza vidriada impide la correcta aplicación.
Eventualmente, podemos encontrarnos frente a manchas de tipo domestico que no pueden ser totalmente eliminadas con un detergente de
tipo convencional, por lo que será necesario el empleo de disolventes o agentes limpiadores específicos.
Deberá consultarse previamente la clase de resistencia química de la baldosa y, para mayor seguridad, es conveniente hacer una prueba
de limpieza sobre piezas de reserva o en un lugar poco visible.

COLOCACIÓN
El éxito del gres porcelánico se debe no sólo a la calidad técnica y estética del material, sino también a un conjunto de elementos (soporte
colocación, capas intermedias, materiales de agarre, juntas de dilatación...) que constituyen un verdadero sistema.
CARACTERÍSTICAS DEL SOPORTE
Previamente a la colocación de las baldosas cerámicas, se debe estudiar el soporte sobre el que van a ser colocadas. La superficie a
recubrir debe ser plana, firme y estar limpia de sustancias que puedan dificultar la adherencia del material de agarre.
Las principales características a considerar en un soporte son su acabado y estado de la superficie, regularidad planitud, capacidad de
absorción de agua, deformabilidad y estabilidad dimensional, comportamiento frente al agua y a la humedad y compatibilidad química con
el material de agarre a emplear.
Para aquellas características que no cumplan con unos requisitos adecuados para la colocación o cuando se prevean movimientos
estructurales altos, éstos deberán ser resueltos mediante el tratamiento adecuado de la superficie del soporte y/o mediante la utilización de
capas de deslizamiento, de nivelación, de refuerzo y/o de aislamiento, así como un adecuado planteamiento de juntas de movimiento, cuya
función es absorber las diferentes tensiones generadas por movimientos de soportes y estructuras.
En caso de reposición sobre material cerámico ya existente, es conveniente tratar la superficie con el fin de crear puntos que faciliten la
adherencia.
JUNTAS DE COLOCACIÓN Y MOVIMIENTO
Es necesario el respeto escrupuloso de la junta mínima de colocación de 1,5mm. entre baldosas, aconsejándose una anchura mayor para
formatos medianos y grandes, de manera que puedan absorber las tensiones diferenciales que se produzcan en el sistema multiestrato
soporte/adhesivo/baldosa.
Para superficies amplias, se aconseja dividir el pavimento en sectores de 4x4 metros, introduciendo juntas de dilatación elásticas (juntas
de partición).
En cualquier caso, es aconsejable dejar una separación entre el pavimento y los elementos existentes tales como paredes, pilares y
elevaciones de nivel (juntas perimetrales), cuya función es la de prevenir la acumulación de tensiones. Esta separación puede ser cubierta
más tarde por el rodapié. La omisión de este tipo de juntas suele ser una de las causas más frecuentes del levantamiento del embaldosado.
AVISO A LOS COLOCADORES
Deberán planificarse y ejecutarse correctamente todo tipo de juntas: estructurales, perimetrales, de dilatación y de colocación.
La colocación sin juntas es desaconsejable desde cualquier punto de vista técnico, pudiendo ser el origen de diversas patologías.
En ningún caso deberán utilizarse materiales de rejuntado que contengan “negro de humo” (juntas negras).
Finalizada la puesta en obra, se recomienda eliminar los restos de materiales de agarre y rejuntado con un desincrustante ácido comercial.

LAY OUT TECHNIQUES AND GRIPPING MATERIALS
Being tiles with very low water absorption capacity, it is essential to use gripping materials compatible with this low porosity. Proper
placement technique is fine layer, with suitable adhesives to the apparent porosity of the tile and compatible with the ground to fix. The use
of cementitious adhesives with high content in polymer resins, adhesives in dispersion or adhesives of reaction, according to the ground
requirements and environmental conditions is recommended in non-residential applications. This approach is made extensible to grout
materials, for which elasticity and high mechanical and chemical resistance will be usually required.
In any case, high levels of adhesion, flexibility and good resistance to water can be common requirements, to which we will have to add
a high chemical resistance in industrial applications. This approach extends to materials for grouting, for which high mechanical and
chemical resistance will usually be required. For the correct use of the gripping material, follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding
preparation and implementation, respecting the indicated times.
Given the low water absorption of glazed porcelain tiles, which delays the drying of the gripping material used, it is recommended to wait
48-72 hours to make normal use of the pavement.
MAINTENANCE DURING WORK EXECUTION
Since the pavement is not the last element in a work place, it will be necessary, once installed, to provide adequate protection from
possible damages that could cause further works, so it must be covered with cardboard, plastics or a thick layer of sawdust.
FIRST CLEANING AFTER LAYING OUT THE TILES
The dirt generated after placing tiles will be removed easily with a commercial descaler or, in its absence, with an acid-based detergent,
but the chemical resistance indicated by the manufacturer of the tiles must be considered, taking into account the following considerations:
* Never make an acid cleaning on newly installed floors, because the acid reacts with the unset cement, and may damage the joints or
deposite insoluble compounds on the surface of the floor tiles.
* It is convenient to impregnate the surface with clean water prior to any chemical treatment, to prevent any of the agents used to be
absorbed by the grouting material, and then rinse with water immediately after treatment to remove all traces of chemicals.
* Do not use metal scrapers or abrasive pads, use preferably natural sponges.
* This type of operation must be performed by experienced staff, taking into account the characteristics of the tiles and the manufacturer’s
recommendations.
DAILY CEANING
Daily cleaning of ceramic tiles is particularly simple, since it only requires clean water to which an alkaline based detergent can be added.
The use of waxes, oils or similar, is not recommended since the zero porosity of the glazed piece prevents their correct application.
Eventually, we can find domestic type stains that can not be completely removed with a conventional detergent, so it will be necessary the
use of specific solvents or cleaning agents.
The class of chemical resistance of the tile must be previously consulted and, for safety reasons, it is convenient to do a cleaning test on
spare pieces or in an inconspicuous area.
LAY OUT
The success of porcelain tiles is due not only to the technical and aesthetic quality of the material, but also to a set of elements (placement
support, intermediate layers, gripping materials, expansion joints...) that constitute a real system.
SUPPORT BASE CHARACTERISTICS
Prior to the laying of ceramic tiles, the medium on wich they will be placed should be studied. The surface to be coated must be flat, firm
and clean of substances that could interfere with adhesion of the gripping material.
The main characteristics to be considered in a ground are its finish and surface condition, flatness, regularity, water absorption capacity,
deformability and dimensional stability, behaviour against water and moisture and chemical compatibility with the gripping material to be
used.
For those features that do not comply with appropriate requirements for placement or when high structural movements are foreseen, these
must be solved by appropriate treatment of the ground to fix and/or by the use of sliding, leveling, reinforcement and/or insulation layers,
as well as an appropriate approach to movement joints, whose function is to absorb the different tensions generated by movements of
supports and structures.
In case of replacement of existing ceramic material, it is advisable to treat the surface to create points that facilitate adhesion.
PLACING AND MOVEMENT JOINTS
It is necessary to strictly respect a minimum placing joint of 1,5mm. between tiles, being advisable a greater width for medium and large
formats, so it can absorb the differential tensions that may occur in the multi-layer support/adhesive/tile system.
For large surfaces, it is advisable to divide the pavement in areas of 4x4 meters, introducing elastic expansion joints (joints partition).
In any case, it is advisable to leave a gap between the pavement and the existing elements such as walls, pillars and elevated levels
(perimeter joints), whose function is to prevent the accumulation of tensions. This separation can be covered later by the skirting. The
omission of this kind of joints is usually one of the most frequent causes of lifting.
NOTICE TO TILE LAYERS
All kind of joints must be properly planned and successfully run: structural, perimetral, expansion and placing joints. Jointless laying is
not advisable from any technical point of view, as it might be the origin of various pathologies. Grouts containing “smoke black” (black
joints) must never be used. After putting tiles in place, it is recommended to remove gripping materials and grouting with a commercial
acid descaling product.
