John Previous reflections can be found on his blog at FrJohnMurphy.blogspot.com Here we are, it is the Fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas is a few days away. Since November 29 we have been on a journey towards the fulfilment of God’s reign along with John the Baptist and the people of Israel. But don’t think for a minute that the journey ends on Christmas Day. The journey began thousands of years ago and will continue until the end of time. Our lives are merely road markers along the way. The journey began with Abraham and Isaac. Moses built a major part of the road. The Prophets built stretches of the road as well. The early followers of Jesus were road builders and we are too. In today’s Gospel, Luke 1:39-45, we hear about a very significant part of the journey toward the fulfilment of God’s reign. Mary having just learned that she was to give birth to the Son of God and that her barren relative Elizabeth had “also conceived a son in her old age,” set out in haste to visit Elizabeth. The journey from Nazareth to Jerusalem was about 75 miles and from Jerusalem to the town where Elizabeth lived was probably a further 6 to 10 miles. The road was treacherous and most likely Mary walked the whole way. It would have taken several days for her to get there. This passage is so familiar that we can overlook the rich symbolism St. Luke’s gospel presents. We are about to witness the fulfillment of all the Old Testament prophets. Mary and Elizabeth are on a collision course with history. Their meeting signals the end of the Old Testament era and the beginning of a new era. Elizabeth is the mother of the last Old Testament prophet and the first New Testament prophet, John the Baptist. Mary is the mother of the long awaited Messiah, the new David, Jesus, Emmanuel, God with us. The birth of Jesus transformed the world. The people of Israel waited thousands of years for this event. For many it probably was a disappointment. The long awaited Messiah was not announced with great fanfare or royal proclamations but in a simple exchange of greetings between two ordinary, faithful women “And how does this happen to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.” As we enter into our Christmas celebrations remember that the real meaning of Christmas, of Emmanuel, God with us, is that God loves us so much that He became one of us. God did this so that we can understand that holiness does not reside in a faraway heaven we cannot see but here, now, in Peachtree City, Georgia. My prayer for each of you this Christmas is that like Elizabeth, you will recognize the presence of the Lord in your everyday lives. “Blessed are you who believe that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” May your Christmas journey be full of joy and peace. Our God and Father, we are eagerly awaiting the deeper coming of your Son among us. Prepare us to recognize and receive him when he comes in his own astonishing way. We expected him to come with great power and he comes in poverty and humility; we looked for him in far places and he stands by our side; we waited for extraordinary signs and we discover him in the simplicity of everyday life and everyday people. Accustom us to your Son and his ways that he may change our lives to conform to his, for he is our Lord and Savior forever. Amen. Fourth Sunday of Advent Cathedrals Around the World Open Holy Doors on Orders of Pope Francis! Pope Francis pushes open the Doors of the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran and of St. Peter’s Basilica, formally launching the Holy Year of Mercy, at the Vatican. Porta Sancta picture is from the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome. A Holy Door or porta sancta was first used in the 15th Century as a ritualistic expression of conversion. Pilgrims and penitents pass through a Holy Door as a gesture of leaving the past behind and crossing the threshold from sin to grace, from slavery to freedom, and from darkness to light. Even today these rituals are associated with prayer, pilgrimage, sacrifice, confession, and indulgences. The Holy Door only finds meaning when the believer associates the door with Christ. Jesus is the Door! In the words of Pope Francis, “There is only one way that opens wide the entrance into the life of communion with God: this is Jesus, the one and absolute way to salvation. To him alone can the words of the Psalmist be applied in full truth: ‘This is the door of the Lord where the just may enter’ (Ps118-20).” On the feast of the Immaculate Conception, Pope Francis opened the Holy Doors of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. He has also directed Bishops throughout the world to open Holy Doors at all Cathedrals. The Bishops may also designate other churches within their diocese so that many Catholics will have access to these holy sites that are so often grace-filled moments as people discover a path to conversion. The Archbishop designated seven church buildings as locations for the Holy Doors of Mercy These seven designated Holy Doors of Mercy will be opened on either a Feast Day or a Solemnity by one of our Bishops. The following is a list of the designated Holy Door locations with the respective dates and times of the openings. The Jubilee of Mercy, which is a season of grace, will offer the possibility of obtaining a plenary indulgence through works of mercy and charity culminating in passing through a Holy Door of Mercy. These pious exercises will accompany the prayer and celebration of the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist as concrete signs of conversion and “immersion” in the Mercy of the Father (Jubilee of Mercy, p.7). As Jesus told the disciples in John 20:23, “Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them…” According to the Apostolic Penitentiary, to gain indulgences it is necessary that the faithful be in the state of grace at the time the indulgenced work is completed. In order to obtain a plenary indulgence, the faithful must, in addition to being in the state of grace: Have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin Have sacramentally confessed their sins Receive the Holy Eucharist (preferably, but not necessarily within the context of Mass) Pray for the intentions of the Pope (your choice, but Our Father and Hail Mary are customary) Indulgences can always be applied either to oneself or to the souls of the deceased, but they cannot be applied to other persons living on earth. Communion. The Great Feast. Bread and Wine. The Holy Eucharist. Jesus said “This is my Body” and “This is my Blood.” Some say they’re merely symbols of remembrance. Others say they’re really the Body and Blood of Christ, but can’t explain how that’s possible. The Eucharist is the center-point of the Mass–but why? The answers are here. Renowned teacher Dr. Brant Pitre guides us through Scripture, history, and Church teaching to illuminate the wonder and miracle of the Eucharist. With deep insight, Dr. Pitre gives a fresh perspective for understanding the mystery that is the Eucharist. Followed by You Did it to Me, which not only helps readers identify practical ways of living out the works of mercy, but helps them understand a “scriptural approach” to mercy as well. “It is my burning desire that during this Jubilee, the Christian people may reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy” (Pope Francis). One term used to describe this reality is efficacious—the sacraments effect change in us and in the world because of God’s power, not our own.” RCIA Classes resume January 6, 2016 Jan 6 Baptism & Confirmation Jan 13 The Eucharist Jan 20 Matrimony & Holy Orders Jan 27 Reconciliation & Anointing of the Sick Need information on Annulments or Convalidations? Without WWP and by extension the ability to grow in my faith with these women, I would not have had the spiritual ability to handle the challenges this year has brought into my life. I have found joy where there would have been none otherwise. Thank you.” “Lord, Teach Me To Pray” (LTMTP) is a three-part prayer series, rooted in Ignatian spirituality and designed to help women and men learn how to pray. The three parts are taken in succession. Each part is a prerequisite for the next part. Part I, Praying Christian Virtues (12 weeks), introduces Ignatian prayer and spirituality in the way that St. Ignatius himself introduced people; i.e., by structuring their initial prayer experience around the Christian Virtues. Part 1 is conducted in a small group experience with two trained facilitators. Each group will meet for two hours once a week for prayer, faith sharing and introduction to the methods of Ignatian prayer. Everyone will receive Scriptures on the virtues to use daily at home for 15 minutes of private prayer.
