community, and as needed, assist to our neighboring St. Vincent
de Paul conferences. Please consider giving generously.
Christmas cards and gifts from the Monastery of
the Holy Spirit. The Knights of Columbus will be

The Christmas Eve and Christmas Day second

a 62-year legacy in Georgia of charity for our most
needy brothers and sisters and a mission inspired by
our Catholic faith. Many of the clients are members
of the working poor who work several jobs and long
hours to support their families. Many of these individuals are also facing a life crisis, are alone and frightened. Catholic Charities Atlanta staff help to identify their problems and provide them with the resources to put them on the path to independence.
Catholic Charities services are aimed at empowering people to
utilize their strengths and resources to meet their individual and
family needs. Please give generously where it truly counts. Please
support Catholic Charities to provide help and create hope for individuals and families facing challenges in our community, struggling on the margins of society, and living in poverty.

Thoughts From this Sunday’s Readings by Fr. John
Previous reflections can be found on his blog at
FrJohnMurphy.blogspot.com
Here we are, it is the Fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas is a
few days away. Since November 29 we have been on a journey towards the fulfilment of God’s reign along with John the Baptist and
the people of Israel. But don’t think for a minute that the journey
ends on Christmas Day. The journey began thousands of years ago
and will continue until the end of time. Our lives are merely road
markers along the way. The journey began with Abraham and Isaac.
Moses built a major part of the road. The Prophets built stretches of
the road as well. The early followers of Jesus were road builders and
we are too.
In today’s Gospel, Luke 1:39-45, we hear about a very significant
part of the journey toward the fulfilment of God’s reign. Mary having just learned that she was to give birth to the Son of God and that
her barren relative Elizabeth had “also conceived a son in her old
age,” set out in haste to visit Elizabeth. The journey from Nazareth
to Jerusalem was about 75 miles and from Jerusalem to the town
where Elizabeth lived was probably a further 6 to 10 miles. The road
was treacherous and most likely Mary walked the whole way. It
would have taken several days for her to get there.
This passage is so familiar that we can overlook the rich symbolism
St. Luke’s gospel presents. We are about to witness the fulfillment
of all the Old Testament prophets. Mary and Elizabeth are on a collision course with history. Their meeting signals the end of the Old
Testament era and the beginning of a new era. Elizabeth is the mother of the last Old Testament prophet and the first New Testament
prophet, John the Baptist. Mary is the mother of the long awaited
Messiah, the new David, Jesus, Emmanuel, God with us. The birth
of Jesus transformed the world. The people of Israel waited thousands of years for this event. For many it probably was a disappointment. The long awaited Messiah was not announced with great
fanfare or royal proclamations but in a simple exchange of greetings
between two ordinary, faithful women “And how does this happen to
me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the
moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my
womb leaped for joy.”
As we enter into our Christmas celebrations remember that the real
meaning of Christmas, of Emmanuel, God with us, is that God loves
us so much that He became one of us. God did this so that we can
understand that holiness does not reside in a faraway heaven we cannot see but here, now, in Peachtree City, Georgia. My prayer for
each of you this Christmas is that like Elizabeth, you will recognize
the presence of the Lord in your everyday lives. “Blessed are you
who believe that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be
fulfilled.” May your Christmas journey be full of joy and peace.
Our God and Father,
we are eagerly awaiting
the deeper coming of your Son among us.
Prepare us to recognize and receive him
when he comes in his own astonishing way.
We expected him to come with great power
and he comes in poverty and humility;
we looked for him in far places
and he stands by our side;
we waited for extraordinary signs
and we discover him in the simplicity
of everyday life and everyday people.
Accustom us to your Son and his ways
that he may change our lives to conform to his,
for he is our Lord and Savior forever.
Amen.

Fourth Sunday of Advent
Cathedrals Around the World Open Holy Doors on Orders of Pope Francis!
Pope Francis pushes open the Doors of the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran and of St. Peter’s Basilica,
formally launching the Holy Year of Mercy, at the Vatican. Porta Sancta picture is from the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome.
A Holy Door or porta sancta was first used in the 15th Century as a ritualistic expression of conversion. Pilgrims and penitents pass
through a Holy Door as a gesture of leaving the past behind and crossing the threshold from sin to grace, from slavery to freedom, and
from darkness to light. Even today these rituals are associated with prayer, pilgrimage, sacrifice, confession, and indulgences.
The Holy Door only finds meaning when the believer associates the door with Christ. Jesus is the Door! In the words of
Pope Francis, “There is only one way that opens wide the entrance into the life of communion with God: this is Jesus, the
one and absolute way to salvation. To him alone can the words of the Psalmist be applied in full truth: ‘This is the door of
the Lord where the just may enter’ (Ps118-20).”
On the feast of the Immaculate Conception, Pope Francis opened the Holy Doors of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. He has also directed
Bishops throughout the world to open Holy Doors at all Cathedrals. The Bishops may also designate other churches within their diocese
so that many Catholics will have access to these holy sites that are so often grace-filled moments as people discover a path to conversion.
 The Archbishop designated seven church buildings as locations for the Holy Doors of Mercy
 These seven designated Holy Doors of Mercy will be opened on either a Feast Day or a Solemnity by one of our Bishops.

The Jubilee of Mercy, which is a season of grace, will offer the possibility of obtaining a plenary indulgence through works of mercy and
charity culminating in passing through a Holy Door of Mercy. These pious exercises will accompany the prayer and celebration of the
Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist as concrete signs of conversion and “immersion” in the Mercy of the Father (Jubilee of
Mercy, p.7). As Jesus told the disciples in John 20:23, “Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them…”
According to the Apostolic Penitentiary, to gain indulgences it is necessary that the faithful be in the state of grace at the time the indulgenced work is completed. In order to obtain a plenary indulgence, the faithful must, in addition to being in the state of grace:




Have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin
Have sacramentally confessed their sins
Receive the Holy Eucharist (preferably, but not necessarily within the context of Mass)
Pray for the intentions of the Pope (your choice, but Our Father and Hail Mary are customary)
Indulgences can always be applied either to oneself or to the souls of the deceased, but they cannot be applied to other persons living on
earth.
For more information there are many resources online, including USCCB.org or listen to a podcast at BustedHalo.com podcast #463,

and Blood of Christ, but can’t explain how that’s
possible. The Eucharist is the center-point of the
Mass–but why?
The answers are here. Renowned teacher
Dr. Brant Pitre guides us through Scripture,
history, and Church teaching to illuminate the
wonder and miracle of the Eucharist. With deep
insight, Dr. Pitre gives a fresh perspective for
understanding the mystery that is the Eucharist.
In Honor of this Jubilee of Mercy we will offer
Wisdom & Works of Mercy
We will use: The One Thing is Three + You Did it to Me by Fr. Michael Gaitly
10 weeks
Mondays
11:15 AM -1:15 PM
Begins January 25
This class begins with The One Thing is Three, which helps us understand
the concept of communio (communion) by explaining its three points:
Communion with the Trinity; Transforming Communion with Christ; and
the Mission of Communion.
Followed by You Did it to Me, which not only helps readers identify
practical ways of living out the works of mercy, but helps them understand a “scriptural approach” to mercy as well.
“It is my burning desire that during this Jubilee, the Christian people may
reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy” (Pope Francis).

A Journey of Conversion
For those wanting to be Catholic
Those needing to complete their Sacraments
Anyone wanting to learn more about the Catholic Faith
RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults): Helping you to live a Gospel inspired life in an increasingly secular world
Have you been coming to Mass for awhile and think, “what does it mean to be Catholic?” Are you
interested in finding out what Catholics really believe? Join us for Inquiry. Now might be the perfect time
to join us. Wednesdays, 6:30-8pm. All sessions are informal and completely commitment free.
Our RCIA classes in the New Year
will center on the Sacraments
Our catechism states our Sacraments are “efficacious signs
of grace.” What does efficacious mean? That it “produces the
effect you intended.” The Catholic Faith Handbook for Youth
says: “So a sacrament does more than just symbolize
spiritual reality—it actually makes that spiritual reality
present at the place and time the sacrament is
celebrated. One term used to describe this reality is
efficacious—the sacraments effect change in us and in the
world because of God’s power, not our own.”

WALKING TOWARD ETERNITY
8 Weeks on Sundays 8:45-10:15 AM
Begins January 10
LOCATION: Adult Faith Room
Putting Your Faith into Practice
Walking Toward Eternity is an inspiring series designed to help participants live their faith more fully. Daring to Walk the Walk, the first
series of Walking Toward Eternity, introduces seven key virtues and
outlines practical steps for living them out in daily life.
You will learn how to walk in: Love, Forgiveness, Humility,
Prayerfulness, Faithfulness, Sacrifice, Thankfulness
What is Walking with Purpose?
 Walking with Purpose is a Catholic Women’s Bible study
program.
 Walking with Purpose aims to bring women to a deeper
personal relationship with Jesus Christ by offering personal
study and small group discussion that link our everyday
challenges and struggles with the solutions given to us through
the teachings of Christ and the Catholic Church.
Personal Testimonies
 “I am truly blessed to be part of this wonderful group of
Christ-filled spiritual women. The Holy Spirit has been working
overtime in my life since I joined this group. They have helped
hold me up. I look forward every week to being with the “girls”.
We open our hearts up to each other.”
 “The women in our group are an amazing bond and strength
resource. The unconditional love that pours from the hearts of
women brought together in Christ is immeasurable. Without
WWP and by extension the ability to grow in my faith with these
women, I would not have had the spiritual ability to handle the
challenges this year has brought into my life. I have found joy
where there would have been none otherwise. Thank you.”
“Lord, Teach Me
To Pray” (LTMTP)
is a three-part
prayer series,
rooted in
Ignatian
spirituality and
designed to help
women and men
learn how to
pray. The three parts are taken in succession. Each part is a
prerequisite for the next part.
Part I, Praying Christian Virtues (12 weeks), introduces Ignatian
prayer and spirituality in the way that St. Ignatius himself
introduced people; i.e., by structuring their initial prayer
experience around the Christian Virtues. Part 1 is conducted
in a small group experience with two trained facilitators. Each
group will meet for two hours once a week for prayer, faith
sharing and introduction to the methods of Ignatian
prayer. Everyone will receive Scriptures on the virtues to use
daily at home for 15 minutes of private prayer.
