Ron Weissbeck This year the solemnity of All Saints falls on Saturday, November 1st, and is not a holy day of obligation. My dear family in Christ, It has been a tradition for many years to call our attention in the third week of October to being a missionary as the whole Church concentrates on World Mission Sunday. I saw it in a new light when I was a pastor in Monteria, Colombia, 22 years ago. I had the sense that I was a missionary to them but at the time was not as aware that they also were acting as missionaries. It does not depend on monetary resources but more fundamentally on a response to the call to live the Good News. The very nature and purpose of the Church is to reach out. It is our common responsibility to announce the Gospel by the way we live. This has been expressed recently through the call to be evangelizers. We must have more than just an acceptance of the Gospel message. We must become involved in sharing the message with others. From the days of the first apostles, especially Paul, the task has been to proclaim the message to those who have not heard it. What is this message? God has sent His Son into the world to offer the gift of eternal life to all who believe. It is not limited to a set of propositions but, first of all, an openness to the One who was sent by God, namely, Jesus. It is only when we allow ourselves to really know Him as a person that we are on the way to being missionaries. I have often heard some people say that they have a personal relationship with Jesus and that is what gives meaning to their lives. I would not question this, but the call is not just personal. It is also a call to make that relationship concrete by becoming a member of the body that Jesus established to assure the continuation of what has been left behind. The Church has been entrusted with the charge to bring the Good News to all. This is what we focus on this Sunday and renew our commitment to be bearers of the Gospel by the way we live and share that conviction with others. Please join us for a special concert following our 5:00 p.m. Saturday evening Mass. Our concert will feature our St. John’s choirs and is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls) will take place on Sunday, November 2nd. Please look for our All Souls Day envelopes in our church pews to be included with special Mass intentions on this day. Treasures from Our Tradition When the fathers of the Second Vatican Council met to discuss the sacrament of penance, they were required to draw up a new rite, including several forms. The hot button for debate was so-called “general absolution,” by which a penitent could be absolved of sin without confessing to a priest. This was a difficult debate, compounded by widely varying traditions in both East and West. Some were surprised to learn that the Holy See had already given permission, during the First and Second World Wars, for this form. In 1944 the Vatican issued a decree saying this form was valid under extreme conditions, which bishops in mission lands and Latin America took as a kind of “blanket permission.” Thus, the fathers of the Council were alarmed to find this practice fairly widespread, not only in war, but in peaceful places with huge numbers of faithful and few priests. Although they eventually produced a ritual with three different forms, the forms are not considered equal, and the enriched and revised individual form is preferred. The enrichments include a welcome of the penitent, a sign of the cross with an encouragement to trust in God’s compassion, new texts rich in the Word of God, praise for God’s mercy, and a dismissal. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Fr. Ron Jesus was a missionary. As the Word of God, He is the light of all nations. As the Word made flesh, He brought God’s own life into our midst. Before returning to the Father, He sent the Church to continue the mission given to Him by the Father and empowered her with his Spirit: “As the Father has sent me, so I send you” (John 20:21). www.johnthebaptist.org 3 CHURCH OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST LONGMONT, COLORADO Life Chain 2014 The Knights of Columbus would like to thank and acknowledge everyone who turned out for the annual Longmont Life Chain on Sunday, October 5th. Weissbeck, The Office of Social Ministry is pleased to present to St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish a contribution of $1,000 from the local Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl collection for St. John’s Food Bank. Thank you, Fr. Weissbeck, for this important work of Work of Mercy to the community and congratulations of the front page article on the Denver Catholic Register featuring this ministry. Sincerely Yours in Christ, Al Hooper, Director Fara Kearnes, Associate Office of Social Ministry Office of Social Ministry By John Williams I believe that many involved with our Uganda ministry know by now that Fr. Francis will not be coming to Colorado, or the U.S. for that matter, this year. After two denials of his visa, he had to postpone his trip as it was getting too late in the year for him to travel. Wambale Inc., the oversight board of this ministry, has taken on the task of solving the problem and will reschedule for next year. In the meantime, Fr. Francis sends his regrets and regards to St. John’s and promises to keep us updated on projects and accomplishments of this mission. I would like to take this opportunity to keep fresh in the minds of all who support this ministry the main goals of our mission in Uganda. The first is clean water, as tainted water is the major factor in disease and death in this and many other African nations. The second goal is education. Whether it’s assisting with tuition for children of elementary, high school, and even college students (most of these are for priests or nuns), it is also used to help students seeking agricultural education, as food is always in need. Finally, our third goal is to build up the Catholic Church in an area where Muslims and Pentecostals are gaining ground. Much of this is already achieved in the second goal in helping with Catholic education. Currently we are assisting two women in convents, two seminarians, the Catholic college in the area, and the Catholic high school and primary (elementary) schools. Fr. Francis is working on a CD to send to us with lots of pictures and explanations of current and recent projects and needs. This will be offered to our parish to view when it arrives. Times and dates will be determined. Family-Centered Faith Formation Grades K-6 and RCIC Tuesdays, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in our middle school. Confirmation and RCIT Thursdays, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in our elementary school All Faith Formation Registration Fees are due by October 30th unless other arrangements have been made with our Faith Formation Coordinator. Wednesday, October 22, 6:30 p.m. in Benedict Hall: Come brush up on your understanding of the sacrament of Confession. We will share ways to help your child develop their conscience, learn how to make loving choices, to be sorry for their sins, and to forgive others. We will review how the Rite of Reconciliation is completed and offer tools to prepare children for his or her first confession. Workbooks are provided to assist you in helping your child understand why Catholic Christians treasure this sacrament of peace! Tuesday, October 28: Parents and children will meet in the church for our “All Saints and Souls” prayer service before classes begin. After you check in, please meet in the church. Attention: Confirmation Rite of Enrollment will be part of our Saturday, November 8th “Prayer Day” from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. One parent or sponsor will need to attend from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. We will have a light lunch and refreshments. Please plan to bring a snack to share Thank you so much to all who came to the Living Rosary on October 1st. Your participation was appreciated. We meet again for the rosary on November 5th at 12:00 p.m. A short meeting will follow. We will show the DVD Signs from God: Miracles and their Meanings. All ladies in our parish are always welcome to join us for the rosary and any part of our meetings in Benedict Hall. At our last SJB spring auction, the Reitz family was fortunate to successfully bid on a fishing trip with Fr. Grzegorz. Busy schedules for all meant that we weren’t able to go until August 17th, but it was well worth the wait! Fr. Grzegorz took us to one of his favorite places—Chatfield Reservoir. The day was hot, but beautiful and bright. We had a picnic, took lots of pictures, played Frisbee, did a little bird watching, and finally wet our lines. Unfortunately, the fish weren’t biting that particular afternoon, but since when has that ever spoiled a fishing trip? We particularly enjoyed Father’s blessing of our fishing gear (too bad the fish weren’t listening!), and his sharing of the Divine Office prayers on the drive home. The whole day was a perfect example of “re-creation” as part of God’s loving plan for us. It’s so easy to get caught up in weekend chores and forget that God wants for us to be rejuvenated by enjoying His creation and some spontaneous fun with those we love. Thank you, Fr. Grzegorz, for helping us to remember that! The best is yet to come. Please stay tuned for volunteer invitations for various tasks in the upcoming months. The strength of our auction committee is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team. We can’t wait to see what we can do this year! “Never believe that a few caring people can’t change the world. Unmarked if unknown. Reflection By Seth Willden I write as I walk to the university campus where I work and go to school. I am greeted by a sharp chill in the air. Frost has appeared for the first time this fall and the leaves are desperately clinging to their branches, hoping to survive through the next week. I am reminded that the tenor of our society is often a cold, ambivalent one. We, like the autumn leaves, should cling to our life source for survival. We should seek the truth, speak for justice, and sit in silence to uncover our life’s purpose. Have a happy, crisp, autumn day. 9 St. John’s Craft Fair Save the Date! Everyone from Doestoevsky and Shakespeare down the line to Seinfeld has used the sacrament to tragic or comic effect or to reveal aspects of character otherwise hidden. All of this theater, from world classics to slapstick, has had a numbing effect on our own expectations, and has skewed how the culture looks at us and our struggle with sin and forgiveness, hope and healing. Yet the artists are on to something. The reconciliation chapel is a place where hearts are laid bare, where honesty is the watchword, and people confess their deepest needs. It is also a place of rebirth, or at least realignment. It is, like the baptismal font, a place where something dies, and where something else is born. Today, although literature has barely caught up, the place is usually not the dark and gloomy cabinet of old; rather it is a chapel that speaks of peace, serenity, and the comfort of a welcome home. People in one parish were astonished recently to see their children skipping with delight as they left the place of their first confession. We have to wait a bit for world literature to catch up with this reality, but at least we can experience the joy of penance, the thrill of a new beginning, the assurance of God’s love.
