From the Pastor
To the parish family of St. Martha,
The Scripture readings for the 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time continue the theme of Christian discipleship and the essential role of the cross in following in the footsteps of Jesus. The fact that Jesus embraced the role of being Messiah as a humble servant or victim rather than as a conquering king or
warrior confused the people of his time and even his disciples. There seems to be something in us human
beings that says that if we have to endure hardships, difficulties, or rejection (in other words, the cross), then
we should do so in anger and protest, resisting every inch of the way. It should not be, as the prophet Isaiah
describes it, “like a lamb led to the slaughter.” Only in the teaching and life of Jesus Christ does victimhood
take on the possibility of becoming a saving event. Jesus could have refused the cross and could have destroyed his persecutors with a single command. But he chose to embrace the cross and invited his followers
to do the same. If Jesus had acted toward his persecutors as they had acted toward him, there would have
been no difference between the Savior and the persecutor, between the source of peace and the destroyer
of peace. It would have remained a “dog eat dog” world with “an eye for an eye” retaliatory mentality. The
world continues to struggle with this notion of the cross. This is evidenced by our long history of wars and
armed conflicts and of having one nation or group trying to impose its will on the other by force. On the other
hand, efforts at peace seem so helpless at times compared to the efforts for war, and this is true at the international and the personal level.
It is important to note that Christ’s victimhood lies not so much in his choice of the cross, but rather in his
choice to do his Father’s will and thus not to avoid whatever might stand in the way of accomplishing that
will. This leads us to the heart of the mystery of the cross. The Christian vocation is a call to faithfully place
ourselves at the disposal of the Father and to continue the mission given to his Son, Jesus Christ. We receive this call at our Baptism and it demands a distinctive stance toward the well-being of others. It requires
that we determine, as forthrightly as we can, what is truly good for our brothers and sisters around us, and
then do what we can to provide that good for them, even when it requires personal sacrifice on our part. The
simple fact is that, if we do so, we will indeed encounter the cross. Some will consider our efforts as meaningless and absurd. At times even those we try to help may criticize or reject our efforts to assist them in
their need. We may even begin to question the wisdom of the cross in our lives. Like the first disciples, we may be tempted to think that power and force are a better means of bringing about the
results we desire. Jesus must have sensed this attitude among his disciples and so he took time
to patiently instruct them: “If anyone wishes to be first (in the Kingdom), he shall be the last of all
and the servant of all.”

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT
OF THE WEEK
That through our service and our sacrifice
we may grow closer to Jesus and help others to know the love and care of Our Lord.
“If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be
the last of all and the servant of
all.” (Mark 9:35)
Jesus teaches us that we are called to serve
one another. Sacrifice is not a word that
many people like to hear. We think it
means that we must give up something that
we want. However, the literal meaning of
sacrifice is “to make holy,” from the
words “sacer” = sacred and “facere” = to
make. In other words, we make our lives
holy by sharing our gifts in the service of
God.

The Serra Clubs of District 10 of Serra International
encourage every Catholic to watch or listen to the Mass in
which Pope Francis will elevate Blessed Junípero Serra to
Sainthood. The Mass is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. CST on
Wednesday, September 23, 2015 on EWTN television or
radio (KSHJ 1430 AM) in the Houston area.
Blessed Junípero Serra was responsible for 22 missions being established in what is now western Mexico
and California. Serra International was established to
promote and foster vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Serrans and many others have been praying for
years for the canonization of Blessed Junípero Serra.
Those prayers have been answered.
There are eight Serra Clubs in District 10. The members of the Serra Club of Southwest Houston invite you to

The Catholic Organization Of Life, Inc. (the
COOL) would like to invite all youth to the ninth
annual 2015 March of the Surviving Youth to be
held at the Catholic Charismatic Center on Saturday, October 10th. The event starts at 8:30 with

a Jericho March to Planned Parenthood.
The 2015 March of the Surviving Youth theme is
“BORN TO LOVE”
and will be held Saturday, October 10th at the
Catholic Charismatic Center. The message of this
year's march reflects that of the 2015 March for
Life, Archdiocesan Youth Conference, and the
World Meeting of Families. As explained by the
2015 MOTSY youth committee, the theme "Born
to Love" was inspired by "the fact that, at birth, we
are given a mission to love, this mission unites us,
making us one, a family."

Save the Date! 28th National Life Chain, Sunday, October 4, 2:00 to 3:30 p.m.
Town Center: West Lake Houston Parkway and Kingwood Dr.
On the first Sunday of October in 1,900 locations across the United States and Canada, tens of thousands of
pro-life people will gather beside main streets. They will peacefully show solidarity in the Christian community for the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death. They will stand in honor of the 56 million lives
who have been lost to abortion. Every year young women report deciding not to have an abortion after reading the signs
and seeing the people praying.
"I was driving by the Life Chain and considered it a sign from God that I should not abort my twins." "I'm so glad you
were here ten years ago because I decided not to abort my baby." "Thank you for being here."
These are lives impacted by the Life Chain.
Please join our St. Martha community in October for the annual Life Chain. You never know whose life you will
change just by standing for life! Be a voice for the voiceless! Additional infor mation is on

2nd Family Ministry in
need of additional
Volunteers!!!
The 2nd Family Ministry
which is celebrating 11
years of service to the parish and community is in need of additional volunteers.
This ministry provides nonmedical respite help for families caring
for a loved one in their home. Currently
we have three requests for help that we
are unable to fulfill. (1) A woman who
has dementia whose husband needs to get
out to do grocery shopping. What is required is about two hours once or twice a
month in the morning. (2) A woman
with some memory issues who recently
moved in with her daughter who works
all day. The lady can not drive but would
like to get out during the day to go for a
walk, go to adoration at the church or any
other activity that would be mutually
agreeable. What is required is a couple of
hours once or twice a month. (3) A
woman with dementia who lives with her
daughter who has a full time job. This
lady goes to SarahCare during the day.
The daughter is looking for someone
who would be able to occasionally come
in the evening so that she could attend an
occasional social or work event. What
would be required is a couple hours in
the evening or on a weekend on an asneeded basis. We also had a request for
someone who would be paid $10 to $12
an hour to stay with a 94 year old woman
who does require some personal
care. Her daughter is her full time caregiver and is having some dental work
done and needs someone to stay with her
mother for that and other things like that.
If you would like more information or
would like to volunteer to help one of
these families please call or e-mail Peggy

Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration
CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF DEVOTION TO PRAYER IN
ST. MARTHA’S PARISH
“Could you not watch one hour with Me?” Mark 14:37
Our parish is incredibly blessed to have Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration
available in our adoration chapel twenty-four hours a day. Jesus dwells in
the Blessed Sacrament because of His infinite love for each one of us, and
He is always present there in the Blessed Sacrament patiently waiting for
us to come and spend time with Him.
Listed below are hours that are most in need of adorers at this time. However, please note that no hour is really ever “filled” because parishioners
are always invited to choose an hour that works best for them, regardless
of whether or not there are other adorers already there in prayer.
Both regular adorers and substitutes are needed at this time. Even if you
do not have a regular hour, please feel free to visit our Blessed Lord at
any time knowing that He is always waiting for us with joyful anticipation.
Second adorers are needed for the following hours:
Sunday: 1-2 AM, Noon-1 PM, 2-3 PM, 3-4 PM. Monday: 11 PMMidnight. Tuesday: 1-2 AM, 2-3 AM. Wednesday: 1-2 AM. Thursday:

Ministerio Hispano
habían actuado hacia él, no habría habido ninguna diferencia

a Él y a nuestro prójimo.

muchas preguntas o dudas y quieren entender nuestra fe o
