The Baptism of the Lord • January 10, 2016
J
ubilee Year of Mercy
January 10, 2016 • The Baptism of the Lord
Fittingly, this Jubilee Year of Mercy is also
the Lectionary’s Year of Luke, for Luke’s
Gospel highlights God’s mercy in finding
the lost, healing the sick, restoring the
broken, comforting the sorrowful,
forgiving the sinner through Jesus’
ministry. But before doing, Luke’s
Jesus is always praying. As practical
moderns programmed to measure
worth by productivity, we instinctively
appreciate the Jubilee’s call to embrace the
practical challenges of our baptism. But today Luke
focuses not on Jesus being baptized, but on Jesus
praying after baptism. So must we pray to become
the disciples we are called to be, that the Spirit
empower us to do what disciples are called to do.
Imitating Jesus’ openness to the Spirit will enable
us to cooperate with the grace that transforms us
into “beloved sons [and daughters] . . . in whom the
Father is well pleased,” living out, in this Jubilee Year
of Mercy, the extraordinary potential of our baptism.

MANIFESTING THE SPIRIT
The Christmas season closes
this Sunday with the Baptism of
the Lord. This feast is a sister to
last week’s feast of the Epiphany.
Each of them celebrates an
“epiphany,” or a manifestation of the Spirit of God in
Jesus—first in his birth, and now at his baptism.
The divine Spirit is manifested in all of the scriptures
for this feast. Psalm 104 highlights the Spirit of God
creating and renewing the earth, while the reading from
Isaiah describes God restoring Israel. In Luke’s account
of the baptism of the Lord the Holy Spirit descends upon
Jesus. And the letter to Titus reminds us that the Holy
Spirit was “richly poured out” on us also, through the
“bath of rebirth” (Titus 3:5, 6).

A great opportunity has come to our Parish.
The Museum committee in our on going efforts to teach about the
history of our Mission would like to add a replica of an 1800’s caretta
to our patio area. We have found a local craftsman who can make
it for us but we need to purchase supplies and pay for his labor.
During Colonial times the carreta was used to transport goods and
people from one Mission to another. It enabled a flourishing trade
to develop within California. The carreta will enable visitors and
parishioners alike the opportunity to
visualize and appreciate the struggle of
those pioneers who came to California as
priests, soldiers, and settlers.
We need your help to raise funds for this
historic Mission project. All donations
will be greatly and graciously accepted.

It’s time to get affordable health insurance
Covered California Open Enrollment starts now!
As of 2014, most people are required to have health
insurance or, more precisely, “minimum essential
coverage” otherwise they may face a tax penalty.
Many families and individuals are eligible for slidingscale financial help that can reduce health care costs.
Don’t miss the opportunity to provide a healthy
future for your family!
Covered California open enrollment will run from Nov 1st, 2015
to Jan 31st 2016. Certified Enrollment Counselors for the Covered
California Health Care Program are available through Catholic
Charities Diocese of Monterey. Counselors are able to determine
eligibility and assist with applications. For more information about
the program, local outreach events in your parish, or to schedule an
appointment please call our offices.

Care for Creation
Rain – Praise God! Although we are expecting a lot of
rain, we are still in a drought so keep up your water conserving
activities like short showers, catching the water as you wait
for the water to warm up, shutting off the faucet when you
brush teeth and wash dishes, not to mention to turn off your
irrigation. Every drop really does count!

The Baptism of the Lord
Jesus came to the Jordan River to
be baptized by John. At first John
objected and said that it was he,
John, who should be baptized
by Jesus. Jesus indicated a future
baptism when he responded to John
saying that it was fitting for John to
baptize Jesus. John acquiesced and
at the conclusion of the baptism,
the Spirit came down from heaven
in the form of a dove and clearly
announced Jesus as his son. God
was pleased with His son.
Reflection question:
Adult: Do you think that God was
“well pleased” by your actions in
recent weeks? Why?
Child: What good thing could you
do this week that would be pleasing
to God?
Reflection and questions from RCL Benziger.

This will start a series on creating a

McCormack, IHM
Consider having a prayer center
at home – in a windowsill, by the
TV, a spot on a shelf, landing on a
stairway… You might include a
statue (like of Mary), a bible, a rosary,
flowers, a cloth to match the liturgical
season (right now we’re white - next
week begins green). This is a great
visual reminder to pray.

arrepentimiento) y queramos no volver a cometerlo.
beneficios. (Continuará en el próximo boletín)

A
Lucas presenta a Jesús orando!
