But before doing, Luke’s Jesus is always praying. As practical moderns programmed to measure worth by productivity, we instinctively appreciate the Jubilee’s call to embrace the practical challenges of our baptism. But today Luke focuses not on Jesus being baptized, but on Jesus praying after baptism. So must we pray to become the disciples we are called to be, that the Spirit empower us to do what disciples are called to do. Imitating Jesus’ openness to the Spirit will enable us to cooperate with the grace that transforms us into “beloved sons [and daughters] . . . in whom the Father is well pleased,” living out, in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, the extraordinary potential of our baptism. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. MANIFESTING THE SPIRIT The Christmas season closes this Sunday with the Baptism of the Lord. This feast is a sister to last week’s feast of the Epiphany. Each of them celebrates an “epiphany,” or a manifestation of the Spirit of God in Jesus—first in his birth, and now at his baptism. The divine Spirit is manifested in all of the scriptures for this feast. Psalm 104 highlights the Spirit of God creating and renewing the earth, while the reading from Isaiah describes God restoring Israel. In Luke’s account of the baptism of the Lord the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus. And the letter to Titus reminds us that the Holy Spirit was “richly poured out” on us also, through the “bath of rebirth” (Titus 3:5, 6). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. The Museum committee in our on going efforts to teach about the history of our Mission would like to add a replica of an 1800’s caretta to our patio area. We have found a local craftsman who can make it for us but we need to purchase supplies and pay for his labor. During Colonial times the carreta was used to transport goods and people from one Mission to another. It enabled a flourishing trade to develop within California. The carreta will enable visitors and parishioners alike the opportunity to visualize and appreciate the struggle of those pioneers who came to California as priests, soldiers, and settlers. We need your help to raise funds for this historic Mission project. All donations will be greatly and graciously accepted. At first John objected and said that it was he, John, who should be baptized by Jesus. Jesus indicated a future baptism when he responded to John saying that it was fitting for John to baptize Jesus. John acquiesced and at the conclusion of the baptism, the Spirit came down from heaven in the form of a dove and clearly announced Jesus as his son. God was pleased with His son. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.
