IN OUR COMMUNITY PAGE B1 Labels and their appropriate interpretation are crucial to helping people select healthier foods, Dr. John L. Sievenpiper, an internationally recognized expert on diabetes and nutrition, said. Sievenpiper, a consulting physician and associate professor at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, traveled to Mexico to take part in a forum on sweeteners and health. "We need to educate and to warn consumers. If we put things on labels that nobody can read or interpret, it's useless," he said, insisting on the need to bring the issue into schools. "Teach children how to cook ... take them to farms so they know where food comes from," he urged. An appropriate reading of labels provides consumers with information about the amount of sugar, salt or fats in food and enables them to make the right decisions to prevent health problems such as obesity, though the quantity of food consumed is the decisive factor. "Yes, it's the quantities," Sievenpiper said, citing the consequences of a push to reduce consumption of fats. "Authorities blamed obesity on fats, though the scientific evidence was very weak," he said. "We focused on fat and the food industry responded by offering tons of fat-free products," he said. "The fact is that people began to choose fat-free products and potentially began to eat more (because) "the fat was replaced with more sugar." Anything in excess is potentially dangerous, Sievenpiper said. "We need to move toward a new paradigm," the expert said. "There is a kind of nutricentrism of illness. It is not about salt, sugar, or fat in themselves. We must have healthy patterns of life and nutrition where there is moderation and more physical activity." Sievenpiper said that governments and the food industry should emphasize a healthy diet rather than focus on specific ingredients. Government and industry "should work together because we need the industry to produce foods," he said. "This should be a functional relationship in an effort to get healthier foods from the industry." "The challenge is to have the industry producing healthier foods and consumers who want to buy them," Sievenpiper said. "For example, the government should subsidize fruits and vegetables, or foods high in fiber, instead of taxing foods high in salt or sugar just to try to inhibit consumption. During the second week of August 2015, Investigators from the PCU were notified of possible criminal activity at a Newbury Park pharmacy. Investigators learned Michael Shapiro was attempting to fill a forged prescription for controlled substances. Detectives followed up on the information and learned Michael Shapiro had passed 160 forged prescriptions in the past year for Norco (hydrocodone), Xanax (alprazolam), Ritalin. (methylphenidate), and Ambien (Zolpidem Shapiro was living. Hundreds of blank and pre-filled out fraudulent prescriptions, as well as illegally obtained prescription drugs, were seized. Evidence was also recovered indicating Shapiro was manufacturing the prescription forms from his home. The investigation revealed Shapiro had extensive knowledge regarding prescription drugs as he had graduated from Yale medical school, but never obtained licensure as a physician. Shapiro was arrested and booked into the Ventura County Jail for forging prescriptions and commercial burglary. He appeared in Ventura County Superior Court on September 10, 2015. Search warrants were written and served at two locations in Los Angeles County where Michael "Spice" the new drug Continued from page A1 increased in recent years and with it, the number of people suffering from vomiting, spasms, hallucinations or psychotic episodes, said a spokesman of the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Eduardo A. Chavez. "I talked to heroin addicts who say they prefer to take heroin or crystal before venturing to see what 'spice' can do to your body. If a heroin addict does not use synthetic drugs its because they are afraid of how they will react (...), and that should tells you all about the dangers of this drug," said Chavez. Chavez, who for three years persecuted traffic "spice" in the community in New Mexico, warns of dangerous chemical mutations suffered by the drug since it appeared in the US five or six years ago, when its components were similar to THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, the active ingredient in marijuana). At that time, under the labels of "incense" or "potpourri", the drug is sold in gas stations or stores where pipes, vaporizers and all kinds of paraphernalia for smoking marijuana are offered. When the drug was deemed illegal and the DEA began to chase the "spice" they started selling the drug in the same alleys of heroin or crystal, and behind the counters of stores that previously sold it taking advantage of the loophole. "It is not enough to get to a store and say I want a gram of 'spice'. There is a code," said Chavez, who had an impact on the drug use begins in the ages of 14 and 16, but extends to the elderly and also does not distinguish between rural and large urban areas such as Los Angeles or New York. Although there is no consumer profile, the market for "spice", known on the street as "K2", "Yucatan Fire," "Genie" or "Bombay Blue" - they package the drug as an attractive and harmless way Priced at $25 for three and a half grams, consumption of "spice" has increased in recent years and with it, the number of people suffering from vomiting, spasms, hallucinations or psychotic episodes. with different flavors and flashy colors, similar to sweets. Among the different brands, include "Scooby Snacks", with a picture of the cartoon Scooby-Doo, and "Bizarro", named after one of the villains enemies of Superman in the history of fiction and whose packaging purple are marked with an "S" backward. "The problem is that, being a synthetic drug, a person may not know how it will affect your body. You can take it, to be drugged for a time and suddenly suffer bad symptoms after a few minutes of consuming the drug" the DEA agent warned. During the first eight months of 2015, the poison control centers have received more than 5,700 emergency calls for information on how to deal with an overdose of "spice", a figure higher than in 2014, when 3,682 People called these centers, according to official data. The drug has torn families like Connor Eckhardt, a 19 year old who died after taking a drug from a cigarette of "spice" and has launched a nationwide campaign to warn of the risks of synthetic drugs and ask the authorities for tougher policies. According to Chavez, the chem- icals manufacturers are easy to come by. Some chemicals they buy online and laboratories imported from China, they camouflage the drug as "vitamins" or "printer ink" to avoid customs controls in the ports of Los Angeles and San Francisco airports such as John F. Kennedy New York. These chemicals, acetone, synthetic flavors and dried leaves of damiana (a legal plant that grows in Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean) manufacturers and manage to produce large amounts of the synthetic drug in clandestine laboratories, many of them hidden in the middle west of the country. "I remember that whenever I entered a house or a place where they were manufactured synthetic drugs, the smell was like an explosion of sweet. It seemed as if a factory had exploded strawberries. So powerful is the smell that they put in the drug "said the DEA agent. The manufacturing chemicals of unknown origin makes this drug a fruity molotov cocktail and generator of paranoia, suicidal thoughts and a liability for the health whose long-term effects are still unknown. www.vidanewspaper.com VIDA NEWSPAPER 09-10-15 Richard Rush will receive Lifetime Achievement Award United Way of Ventura County will award CSU Channel Islands (CI) President Richard R. Populus died of multiple system failure due to sepsis. At the time of his death, Populus had infections throughout his body. Charges of dependent adult abuse causing death have been filed against the facility’s director of nursing, Alexiuse San Mateo, who was responsible for Populus’s care at the facility and willfully permitted the patient’s death. Consuelo Policarpio, the supervising nurse, is charged with dependent adult abuse causing great bodily injury due to a delay in calling 911. Verdugo Valley Skilled Nursing & Wellness Centre, San Mateo and Policarpio were arraigned yesterday. San Mateo faces 9 years in state prison and a $10,000 fine and Policarpio faces a maximum of 7 years in state prison and a $10,000 fine. Verdugo Valley, LLC faces a $10,000 fine and exclusion from any state or federally funded health care program. The Declaration in Support of Arrest Warrant alleges that staff at Verdugo Valley delayed calling 911 and failed to document critical changes in their patient’s condition, in addition to making false entries in medical records. In the 14 months that Populus was a patient at Verdugo Valley, 80 change of condition forms required signature by a treating physician, but all 80 forms were void of a doctor’s signature. The facility named the patient’s primary care doctor as his treating doctor from the hospital; however, this doctor did not have a relationship with Populus and never visited him at Verdugo Valley. The case stems from an investigation conducted by the California Department of Justice’s Bureau of Medi-Cal Fraud and Elder Abuse. Since taking office in 2011, Attorney General Harris has created specialized BMFEA teams in Sacramento and Los Angeles composed of legal and nursing professionals to combat abuse, neglect and poor quality of care in California’s nursing homes. The complaint filed by Attorney General Harris alleges that Verdugo Valley, was grossly negligent in its care of James Populus, a resident with burns on 90 percent of his body from an arson fire two decades earlier. In the 14 months that Populus was in the care of Verdugo Valley, he was examined by a doctor far fewer times than required by law, despite the respiratory and other health needs of burn victims.
