Lent: It's about Transformation
Here we go again: Lent, a time in the liturgical year when we pray, fast and give alms. Some
observe Lent as an endurance test to see if they can give something up 40 days. The most
popular things that people give up for Lent are chocolate, swearing, alcohol, soda, social
networking, sweets, and fast food.
But Lent isn't about endurance or even following traditions, it's about transformation. For
Christians, the word transformation is about an inward change that takes place in our being as
we feed on Christ as our spiritual Food and Drink. As we are transformed more deeply into
the likeness of Christ on the inside, we begin to express Christ more and more in our daily life
through our words and actions.
Lent is powerful time of grace when we choose particular forms of prayer, fasting, almsgiving
that bring us closer to God and lead us further on our spiritual journey. Because each of us has a
unique relationship with God and is at a different place on our spiritual journey, what we do for
Lent should also be unique.
Prayer: Set aside a fixed time each day and talk to God in your own words.
Fasting: What is getting in your way from getting closer to God? Are you too busy, harboring
a grudge, holding on to a sin or a bad habit? Give that up for Lent.
Almsgiving: Our relationship with God is intrinsically linked to our relationship with others,
particularly the spiritually and materially poor. Give alms by choosing one person or a group of
people that you are going to serve this Lent.
Do something different for Lent this year so that after the 40 days of Lent you’ll be in a different
place, a place closer to God where your peace and joy will increase. Allow these three practices
to transform your heart this Lent so that you are not just worshiping God but following Him,
day by day. Lent: it’s about transformation.

Volunteers Needed
St. Edward parishioners are invited to help staff the upcoming Catholic Charities of Orange County workshops
to process migrant applicants for the Deferred Action for
Parent Accountability (DAPA) and Deferred Action for
Childhood Arrivals (DACA)
federal programs.
These programs are part of a series of Presidential Executive Actions to crack down on illegal immigration at our
borders, prioritize deporting felons (not families), and
require certain undocumented immigrants to pass a criminal background check and pay taxes in order to temporarily stay in the U.S. without fear
of deportation.
St. Edward’s will serve as a satellite center for this diocesan activity. Part of our parish mission to be a House of
Prayer / House of the Poor, volunteers – English-speaking
and bilingual – are needed for tasks ranging from greeting
and welcoming applicants to logistics and assisting with
paperwork. A two-hour training session will be held
within the next few weeks. Applicant workshops will begin during March most likely on Saturdays and Wednesdays. To volunteer for this important Christian service,
please contact Josie at (949) 493-8918.
