Jesus was born during the night of the year when darkness is the longest. The Savior of the World
comes for the people in dark place. The real, lasting, and Deep joy is that the Light shines there.

hearts of the poor who live in dark places in our streets and neighborhoods.

Holy Year of Mercy Pope Francis has declared an extraordinary
Holy Year of Mercy that began on December 8 and closes on November 20,
2016—also known as a jubilee year. Among the privileges granted to the faithful during this year is the opportunity to gain a plenary indulgence, which is the
remission of all of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already
been forgiven. This indulgence can be also applied to the deceased. For the
upcoming year, rather than a pilgrimage to Rome and visit to a papal basilica,
the Pope has determined that a visit to a diocesan cathedral or designated local church (St Philip Benizi is one) will suffice, together with the reception of
the sacraments of Penance and Eucharist, as well as a profession of faith and
prayers for the intention of the Pope. A unique element this time is the granting of the jubilee indulgence to those who perform the traditional spiritual and
corporal works of mercy (sheltering homeless, comforting sorrowful, etc.). The
jubilee indulgence may be obtained only once a day (a single sacramental
Confession suffices for several plenary indulgences, but receiving Communion and praying for the intentions of the
Pope are required for each indulgence.

ElPapaFranciscoha declarado un extraordinario Año Santo de la

Learning from St. Francis
The brethren were summoned, the people ran together, the forest resounded with
their voices, and that venerable night was made glorious by many and brilliant
lights and sonorous psalms of praise. The man of God [St. Francis] stood before
the manger, full of devotion and piety, bathed in tears and radiant with joy; the Holy Gospel was chanted by Francis, the Levite of Christ. Then he preached to the
people around the nativity of the poor King; and being unable to utter His name for
the tenderness of His love, He called Him the Babe of Bethlehem.

The Candy Cane
It’s not just a sweet treat, it has a special meaning. The candy maker that invented the candy cane wanted people to remember Jesus birthday. He
used colors and this shape to do that. Let’s look at the first color, white. The color
white means Jesus was perfect. He never sinned. You know like telling lies, stealing
or disobeying parents, he never did those things. Second is the red stripe. The red color stands for the
blood of Jesus. Because Jesus never sinned his blood was pure to God. Jesus would die so our sins
would be covered and invisible to God, if we accept Jesus. The candy cane has a shepherd hook
shape. The shepherds were the first to hear the good news about Jesus. When Jesus got older, he
because the Great Shepherd. Here is the Christmas Candy Cane Poem about Jesus: Look at the Candy Cane, what do you see? Stripes that are red, like the blood shed for me. White is for my Savior,
who’s sinless and pure! “J” is for Jesus My Lord, that’s for sure! Turn it around and a staff you will see.

Please park in the marked spaces.
During this Christmas and New Year’s season
we will see additional numbers at all Masses.
Families will have out of town visitors and some
who have no church affiliation will attend Mass at
St. Philip’s. Please be respectful of fellow parishioners and visitors. There are many parking
spaces in lots on the side and rear of the
Church. It is not necessary to park along the curb in front
of, on the side of, or the back of the Church. The San Damiano parking lot is reserved for Seniors and those with
handicap parking permits. All other handicap parking
spots should be reserved for those with permits, including the
ones behind the church. Also, observe the areas marked “NO
PARKING” in front of the parish hall and white garage as well
as other curbside areas around the property. These areas
must be kept clear for emergency vehicles and access to
the garage. Parking problems should not mar our observance of this holy season—think, “What would Jesus do?”

Preschool News: We are now accepting registrations for the 2015 – 2016 school year, which
began August 17th. The Preschool and Mother’s Morning Out (MMO) are four hour programs:
