Veterans Day
Though observed as a holiday on Monday, Veteran’s Day will
be celebrated in our nation this Wednesday, November 11th.
The reason for this date is that, while on June 28, 1919 the
Treaty of Versailles was signed, bringing an official end to
World War I, an armistice had been reached seven months
earlier at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month!
For the longest time, the day was known therefore as Armistice Day. It was in the wake of World War II that the day
became known as Veteran’s Day. Folks regularly get this day
confused with Memorial Day (in May). But please take care
to acknowledge the distinction: Memorial Day is specifically
for remembering all our deceased veterans; Veterans Day is
for honoring our living ones.
Our Veterans, men and women living among us, as well as
those others still in service around the nation and world, have
given a portion if not all of their life’s work to be a part of the
armed forces. This is, therefore, a day for all of us to honor
and give them our thanks for their willingness to be of service
to us as a nation.
At all the masses this weekend we will acknowledge the
members of our parish who are veterans, and ask God’s special blessing upon them. And it is good too, to be prayerfully
mindful of the family members of those service men and
women who are deployed away from home.
At the very heart of parish life:
NOW IS THE TIME TO ADVERTISE IN OUR
