The Gift of the Magi
Dear Friends,
thinking about the Year of Mercy and how we as a parish can enter into it.
We don’t really have to be experiencing difficulty, tragedy or loss to sense
the need for God’s tender mercy. We all, always, everyday, need God’s
tender mercy. We also all, always, everyday are called to be instruments of
that tender mercy that comes to us in so many ways. Think about joining
us for Mass during the week. Weekday Masses, intimate, brief (20-25
minutes!) opportunities to encounter the Lord, provide a great start to a
day. We celebrate Mass Monday- Thursday at 7:00am and at 8:30am on
Fridays. Join us this year! You will find strength and mercy, love and peace
at the beginning of your day – and will have time to get out and continue
to do what God has in store for you.
In my dining room, on a side table, rests a
small nativity scene. It’s a short handmade set from
Mexico. It consists of just a dozen little statues. It sits
on a table that is accessible to a three-year-old visitor
who frequents the rectory. He entertained himself
with the characters of the scene while his mother
participated in a meeting at the dining room. After
the meeting he really wanted to show us and tell us about some of his
favorite characters – the angel and the kings. He liked the kings because
they went to see Jesus and because they brought him gifts.
The Magi shared their gifts. They gave what they had. Perhaps
they did so because they realized both who Jesus was and from whom all
their gifts came. When we realize who Jesus is in our lives, and when we
consider the giver of all good gifts, then we will be impelled to give gifts
of ourselves in return. The Christ Child invites and encourages us to share
what we have. The Magi did not hold back. They gave. So, in the same
way, we must give.
From the mouth of a three-year-old we can learn much. As
we continue to celebrate the Christmas season (yes, we are still in the
Christmas season for another week!) during this great Year of Mercy, on
this feast of the Epiphany of the Lord, maybe we can consider the actions
of the Magi. Perhaps you and I will commit this year to visiting Jesus and
sharing with him – and his Church – our gifts.
We can take time to be with the Lord, to go to see him in a
sense, in prayer. We must not allow ourselves to become to busy, or too
caught up with the quotidian and mundane and deprive ourselves of the
opportunity for encounter. The Magi, I’m sure, could have come up with
all kinds of excuses to not follow the star.They did not deprive themselves
of the encounter with the Christ Child. So commit to taking the time.
Encounter the Lord in our midst.
Please think of ways you can share what you have this year. The
Pope has encouraged us to practice the works of mercy, and to be
especially mindful of the poor. How will you let go of attachments and
give what you have?
Speaking of giving… I take this opportunity to thank those who
worked so hard to make our Christmas celebrations beautiful, joyful,
and welcoming. I especially thank Jennifer, Joe, Jean, Willie, Maria and
Claudia.
Daily prayer allows us to encounter the Lord. When do you pray?
Where? Is your life becoming to crowded with noise and with stuff to
allow for that great encounter? I invite you to carve out some time –
every day – away from distractions and noises and racing from here to
there to quietly and peacefully encounter the Lord in prayer. He will
surprise you with his love, and mercy and comfort. Another suggestion
I have as we enter this Year of Mercy involves daily Mass. In the Mass, we
encounter the Lord. He comes to us in Word and Sacrament and sends us
(as the Magi too were sent) back into the world. I have been devoted to
daily Mass since my early childhood. I believe God strengthens us through
reception of the Eucharist.

P. S. We have received some generous Legacy gifts have raised over
$300,00 of our $430,000 wrap up goal. This campaign comes to an end
in 28 days! Everything we raise before January 31 will be matched. If we
raise $430,00 we will be debt free for the first time in decades. I thank
those who have made generous sacrificial gifts and encourage the rest to
make yours!
Whenever I work with people who experience difficulty, tragedy,
or loss in their lives, I encourage them to do two things: go to Mass more
than once a week and share their gifts with the poor. Lately, I have been

For our sake, Jesus was stripped naked
when he was nailed to the cross.When the
soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his
clothes and divided them into four parts,
one for each soldier. (John 19:23) We clothe
and shelter those who have become most
vulnerable among us. As God’s chosen
ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves
with compassion, kindness, humility,

END OF YEAR GIVING/CHRISTMAS APPEAL
We need your help. With God’s help (and the help of many of you!), we have come
a long way. We’ve eliminated over a half a million dollars in operating debt, and
completed over six million dollars of long deferred capital and life safety restoration.
After the loans were paid and the construction projects finalized, we have less than a
million dollars in capital debt – which I hope to eliminate by January 31, 2016. If we
raise $430,000 we will be debt free for the first time in decades.
That’s where you come in!We are currently in a match program. Every cent we raise
between now and January 31 will be matched and go against our debt. I ask you to
consider your year-end (or new year) giving. Please consider making a generous gift to

Epiphany Blessing
The Word of God in scripture spoken in Joseph’s dream by an angel is the
basis for obedience to a command that seems to contradict everything in
the custom and the tradition of the practice of law. This is the beginning
of the Good News. This is the shadow that the very birth of the Child
casts upon the earth: the bright shadow of mercy. The Latin word is
misericordia—a heart filled with pity or compassion. This is the basis
of the new interpretation of all Law –compassion– suffering with one
another, and so easing their suffering with unbounded, unpremeditated,
tender concern, regard, and respect for the other person. Joseph is
commanded to lay aside his plans—for marriage, children, family, and
a place in the heritage and hope of Israel; but he is also commanded to
acknowledge the Child as his own and to adopt Mary’s Child into the
lineage of David. And so Joseph has mercy on Mary and the Child to
be born.
It has been a tradition in the Catholic Church to bless
chalk at the all of the Masses of the Epiphany, and then
use the blessed chalk as a part of blessing one’s home in
the New Year.

Joseph is called to an act of faith that for the rest of his life will affect
his relationship with his wife Mary, his Son whom the public will
acknowledge as his first-born, and as a Jew, and his understanding
and practice of law and what it means to be holy. This act of faith, this
obedience to the Word of God proclaimed to Joseph is the first story of
Incarnation, the first story of a person called beyond his understanding
of what religion means to a profound new sense of obedience to the
Word of God and the Law. (Joseph, by Law, should have broken the
engagement with Mary and brought the weight of Jewish Law upon her.)

But Matthew offers a model to all believers in his community—

El Regalo de los Reyes Magos
Queridos Amigos,
necesitar la piadosa misericordia de Dios. Todos nosotros, siempre, diariamente,
necesitamos la piadosa misericordia de Dios. También todos, siempre,
diariamente estamos llamados a ser instrumentos de esa piadosa misericordia
que nos llega de muchas maneras. Piensen en unirse a nosotros para la Misa
durante la semana. Las Misas de lunes a viernes son, íntimas, breves (¡20-25
minutos!) son oportunidades de encuentro con el Señor que proporcionan un
gran comienzo del día. Celebramos la Misa de lunes a jueves a las 7:00 am y los
viernes a las 8:30 am. ¡Únanse a nosotros este año! Encontrarán la fuerza y la
misericordia, el amor y la paz en el comienzo de su día - y tendrán tiempo para
salir y continuar haciendo lo que Dios tiene preparado para ustedes.
En la sala del comedor, sobre una mesita, se
encuentra una pequeña escena del nacimiento. Fue hecho
a mano en México. Consiste de sólo una docena de
pequeñas estatuas. Descansa en una mesa que es accesible
a un visitante de tres años de edad, quien frecuenta la
rectoría. Se entretuvo con los personajes de la escena,
mientras que su madre participaba en una reunión en el
comedor. Después de la reunión este pequeño realmente quería mostrarnos y
contarnos acerca de algunos de sus personajes favoritos - el ángel y los reyes.
Le gustaron los reyes, porque fueron a ver a Jesús y porque le trajeron regalos.
Los reyes magos compartieron sus dones. Ellos dieron lo que tenían. Tal
vez lo hicieron porque se dieron cuenta tanto quién era Jesús y de quien venían
todos sus dones. Cuando nos damos cuenta de quién es Jesús en nuestras vidas, y
si lo consideramos proveedor de todos los dones, entonces estaremos dispuestos
a dar regalos de nosotros mismos a cambio. El Niño Jesús invita y nos anima a
compartir lo que tenemos. Los Reyes Magos no se reprimieron. Dieron. Por lo
tanto, de la misma manera tenemos que dar.
Podemos aprender mucho de lo que dice un niño de tres años de edad.
Mientras continuamos celebrando la temporada de Navidad (¡sí, estamos todavía
en la temporada de Navidad por una semana más!) en este gran año de la
Misericordia, en esta fiesta de la Epifanía del Señor, tal vez podamos considerar
las acciones de los Reyes Magos.Tal vez ustedes y yo nos comprometeremos este
año a visitar a Jesús y compartir con él - y con su Iglesia - nuestros dones.
Por favor, piensen en maneras que ustedes pueden compartir lo que
tienen este año. El Papa nos ha animado a practicar las obras de misericordia,
y ser especialmente conscientes de los pobres. ¿Cómo se van a liberar de su
inclinación a cosas superficiales y darles lo que ustedes tienen?
Podemos tomar tiempo para estar con el Señor, para ir a verlo de cierta
manera en oración. No debemos permitirnos a estar ocupados, o demasiado
atrapados con lo cotidiano y lo mundano y privarnos de la oportunidad para
el encuentro. Los Reyes Magos, estoy seguro, podrían haber tenido todo tipo
de excusas para no seguir la estrella. Ellos no se privaron del encuentro con el
Niño Jesús. Así que, comprométase a tomar el tiempo. A encontrar al Señor en
nuestro medio.
Hablando de dar... Aprovecho esta oportunidad para agradecer a los que
han trabajado tan duro para hacer nuestra celebración de Navidad hermosa,
alegre y acogedora. Agradezco especialmente a Jennifer, Joe, Jean, Willie, María
y Claudia.
La oración diaria nos permite encontrar al Señor. ¿Cuándo rezan ustedes?
¿Donde? ¿Están sus vidas llenas de ruido y cosas que le evitan permitir este gran
encuentro? Los invito a crear algo de tiempo - cada día - lejos de distracciones,
ruidos y carreras de aquí para allá - a encontrarse en silencio y en paz con el
Señor en la oración. Él les sorprenderá con su amor, misericordia y consuelo.
Otra sugerencia que tengo al entrar en este Año de la Misericordia implica la
misa diaria. En la Misa, nos encontramos con el Señor. Él viene a nosotros en la
Palabra y los Sacramentos y nos envía (así como los Reyes Magos también fueron
enviados) al mundo. Me he dedicado a Misa todos los días desde mi pequeña
infancia. Creo que Dios nos fortalece a través de la Eucaristía.

VESTIR AL DESNUDO
Por nosotros, Jesús fue despojado de
sus vestiduras cuando fue crucificado.

Bendición para la Epifanía
La Palabra de Dios en las Escrituras habla del sueño de José de un ángel
que se basa en la obediencia a un comando que parece contradecir todo
en la costumbre y la tradición de la práctica de la ley. Este es el comienzo
de la Buena Nueva. Esta es la sombra que proyecta el nacimiento del Niño
sobre la tierra: la sombra luminosa de misericordia. La palabra latina es
misericordia, un corazón lleno de piedad o compasión. Esta es la base de la
nueva interpretación de todos los Derechos -compasión- sufriendo uno con
otro, y así aliviar el sufrimiento con ilimitada, premeditada, preocupación,
humildad, y respeto por la otra persona. Se le ordena a José que hiciera a
un lado sus propios planes para el matrimonio, los hijos, la familia, y que
considere un lugar para el patrimonio y la esperanza de Israel; pero también
se le ordena a reconocer al Niño como su propio hijo y adoptar al Niño de
María en el linaje de David.Y así José tiene misericordia de María y el niño
que va a nacer.
Es una tradición en la iglesia católica de bendecir tiza en
las misas de la Epifanía, y después utilizar la tiza bendecida
para bendecir su hogar en el Año Nuevo.

tiempo, al entregar su propia vida y todos los futuros años para responder
a la Palabra y a una Ley más exigente. José es el primero en convertirse en
un creyente.
