SO FAR YET SO NEAR
Greetings from Key West! At the writing time
of this bulletin, I am looking out into the Atlantic shores of Key West, after a day of
walking around and visiting the island. I
went to mass today, at the Basilica of St.
Mary Star of the Sea, and guess who else is in the
church? Our very own parishioners George and Beth
Arocha! How crazy is it that I leave Kankakee and
there I am with two parishioners, who also happened
to be in Key West. Small world, huh? And it made me
feel how much so far yet so near I am to you all, my
dear Saint Teresa family.
Right now, I am thinking of the many people who are
probably helping to move the chairs and tables in the
church as we prepare the worship space for the laying
of new carpet. I feel so far, and yet so near, that my
heart is also thinking of the work that many of you are
about to do, in order to make this project a reality. I
am not there physically, but I feel so closely united
with you as this project becomes a reality. Thank you
to so many families that have helped and contributed
to this special project, especially to the family of Jerry
and Eleanor Kuntz, who planted the seed for this endeavor. I am sure they are smiling at us from the
heavens.
I was walking the street of Key West when I received
an emergency voice call from St. Teresa. The call was
about someone who needs last rites, a parishioner
who got into an unfortunate accident. In times like
this, I cannot help but feel guilty that I am not there to
be of help when the help is badly needed. And so the
feeling of being so far and wanting to be so near
comes back again, even more.
But I have to be far, sometimes, in order to have a
sense of what is near and dear. I have to surrender
the control and remind myself that the real priest
never leaves – Jesus our Lord. By the time that most
of you read this, I will already be back in Kankakee,
back to the normal grind of things.
I am grateful for this chance to take a short break. I
continue to carry you all in my prayers, and I hope that
this Lenten season will bring near to us the graces and
blessings that sometimes feel so far away from us.
May we feel the nearness of God as we return again to
the stories of how it all began in the solemn sacrifice
of Jesus. I love you St. Teresa!

TAN LEJOS Y AUN TAN CERCA
Hoy fuí a
Ví a nuestros
Y me sentí tan lejos y aun tan
Me siento tan
Padre Sunny Castillo

Second Sunday of Lent-Feb. 28/Mar. 1, 2015
Today’s first and second readings are linked by the theme of
sacrifice. After Sarah and Abraham wait years to have a child,
God test’s Abraham by asking him to sacrifice his only son,
Isaac. To encourage the Roman Christian community, St. Paul
reminds his brothers and sisters in Christ that God sacrificed
His only Son for the good of all. In St. Mark’s Gospel account
of the Transfiguration, God clearly acknowledges Jesus as His Son, and Jesus alludes to His
death and Resurrection. Our own sacrifice of the
“first fruits” of our time, talent, and treasure to
God through the Church, and to our neighbor,
are solid acts of Christian charity. Sacrifice brings great peace
and joy to those who embrace stewardship as a way of life.
