iven the size of our performing arts audiences, it is not hyperbole to say
that Vegas PBS is Nevada’s Largest Stage. Our commitment to presenting music and drama performances is embedded in our nonprofit mission. Since Las Vegas is a world performance Mecca, members have
unusual opportunities to watch and then attend exciting performances
of the artists they see on TV. We actively partner with appreciative resident and touring artists to secure tickets to thank our loyal donors.
Vegas PBS kicks off the June membership campaign with the newest special from
a talented Canadian group, The Tenors – Under One Sky. Members of The Tenors will
be live in studio on May 30 to tell you how to see them in person later this year. We
will also have hundreds of ticket opportunities for live local performances by Frank
Sinatra Jr., The Fab Four, Brian Wilson, Mannheim Steamroller, Australian Pink Floyd
and Tommy Emmanuel.

Sunday nights continue our commitment to
drama, including the season premiere of Poldark on Masterpiece – a drama that
makes soap operas and telenovelas seem tame! Poldark originally aired in the 1970s
and became one of Masterpiece’s most beloved series. With a romantic historical
storyline and breathtaking Cornwall backdrop, Masterpiece fans will enjoy this new
adaptation of the storyline.
Premiering this month is the third season of Last Tango in Halifax and The Crimson
Field, a six-part British drama series following the lives of medics and patients at a
field hospital in France during the First World War.
Members tell us they love to explore new ideas and new worlds through the programs on Vegas PBS, and to explore the world in person. That’s why we offer member
travel experiences based on our most popular programs. Last month, members journeyed to Catalina Island for the Avalon Ball with Big Band music from the ‘20s and
‘30s. At the end of June, British programming fans can travel to London and Port
Isaac to explore the recording locations of Doc Martin and Sherlock.
Members who prefer to stay a little closer to home will enjoy our popular trips to
the beautiful theaters of the Utah Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City and the outdoor
Tuacahn Amphitheater. For more information on these trips and upcoming concert

Poldark on Masterpiece
Sundays at 9 p.m. beginning June 21
Almost 40 years ago, Captain Ross
Poldark galloped across the TV screens of
millions of viewers, vexing villains and winning female hearts in one of Masterpiece's
earliest hit series. Now the gallant captain
rides again in a thrilling new version with all
the action, adventure, and romance of the
original, plus even more spectacular Cornish
scenery and rousing local color. Aidan
Turner (The Hobbit) stars as Ross Poldark,
a redcoat who returns to Cornwall after the
American Revolutionary War to discover
that his father is dead, his lands are
ruined, and his true love is about to
marry his first cousin. Also starring is Eleanor Tomlinson
(Death Comes to Pemberley)
as the fiery servant Demelza, a strong-willed
miner’s daughter who runs away from home
and finds refuge in Poldark’s enlightened
household.
The new series opens with a prologue in
Virginia in 1781, when Captain Poldark’s
regiment is ambushed by the local militia
fighting for independence. After the war and
with a scar across his face as a souvenir, he
goes home to Cornwall where his real struggle begins. For one thing, everyone assumes
Poldark has been killed in action. On seeing
him, they react as if meeting a ghost. And
he might as well be dead, since his inheritance from his father is almost worthless,
Elizabeth has forsaken him, and all the
local gentry urge him to leave the region to
make his fortune elsewhere. Poldark immediately goes to work paying off his father’s
debts, repairing his property, and reopening
his abandoned copper mine, which either
holds his salvation or his ruin. And he
finds someone just as impulsive as he
is to share the twists and turns of
this eventful new life.

In failing health as he wrote the serialized installments, Dickens abandoned the
sunny geniality of his earlier work for a plot
that was more dreamlike, erotic and sinister
than anything he had ever published. He was
halfway through his dark tale when he died.
The story opens in an opium haze, as John
Jasper (Rhys) smokes his way into oblivion
to take his mind off his detested duties as a
village choirmaster and to fantasize about
murdering his guileless nephew, Edwin Drood
(Freddie Fox). Drood is engaged to marry
the beautiful Rosa Bud (Merchant) with
whom Jasper is perversely in love.

to the test as he solves the most mind-boggling crimes. Now he comes to his final
case. After returning to Styles, Poirot confronts a killer and his own conscience as he
tries to stop a series of murders. Confined
to a wheelchair and crippled with arthritis,
the now elderly Poirot is reunited with his
old companion Captain Hastings back
where it all began 30 years ago. Then, Poirot
was a refugee and Hastings a wounded

murder investigation and will be the final
resting place of their last.
Masterpiece Classic:
The Mystery of Edwin Drood
Sunday, June 14 at 9 p.m.
Charles Dickens concluded a full day’s
work on his latest novel and set down his
pen on June 8, 1870. He died the next day,
leaving The Mystery of Edwin Drood a
mystery indeed. Adapted and completed by
Gwyneth Hughes (Miss Austen Regrets), the
drama uses clues left by the author, together with inspired guesswork, to solve this
famous literary puzzle. Starring Matthew
Rhys,Tamzin Merchant and Julia MacKenzie.
The hospital is…the place between the old rules
and a new way of thinking.”
Oona Chaplin stars in a drama about
WWI’s frontline medics. The series brings
their hopes, fears, triumphs and tragedies
to the fore. In a tented field hospital on the
coast of France, a team of doctors, nurses
and women volunteers work together to
heal the bodies and souls of men wounded
in the trenches. The hospital is not only a
middle ground between the battlefield and
home front, but also the place between
the old rules and a new way of thinking.
Each episode features stories about the
patients, who include British soldiers,
troops from all over the world and even the
local civilians. The series stars Hermione
Norris, Suranne Jones, Kevin Doyle, Kerry
Fox and Marianne Oldham.

Enjoy an uplifting comedy-drama about
romance and second chances. Childhood
sweethearts Alan (Derek Jacobi) and Celia
(Anne Reid), both widowed and in their 70s,
fall for each other all over again when they
are reunited after nearly 60 years. In the
third season of this award-winning series,
Celia and Alan plan to make the most of
their time together, Caroline and Kate settle
into married life and old habits come back
to haunt Gillian.

The concert is a masterwork, delivering the
group’s signature blend of classical and
contemporary pop. This sound was “organically” grown considering that two members are classically trained opera singers
and the two others have performed pop
and stage music. The Tenors have created
new arrangements for some of the world’s
most beloved songs, including Eric Clapton’s
“Tears in Heaven,” Bill Withers’ “Lean On
Me” and Queen’s “Who Wants to Live
Forever.” They also perform their versions
of classics such as “Besame Mucho” and

celebrating his 50th Anniversary as a performer. Grammy nominated singer/songwriter Pam Rose performed two songs with

Australia is an island continent with an
abundance of wildlife found nowhere else
on the planet. As the driest inhabited continent on Earth, it is a world apart, a place
where successive invasions of people have
made a significant impact on its wildlife
and wilderness areas. This episode explores
a fabulous variety of islands dotted across
the Pacific, spawned over many millions of
years. From New Guinea, through New
Britain and Lord Howe Island to New
Caledonia and New Zealand, they stretch
from the equator to the sub-Antarctic. All
are in some way related to Australia but
each has its own distinct character and
unique wildlife. The youngest of all is New
Guinea which was an integral part of
Australia until rising sea levels cut it off
from the island continent approximately
10,000 years ago.

to “walk with bears” with Lynn Rogers, a

young mother bear Lily, her mother June
and their new cubs as they emerge from
hibernation in the Minnesota Northwoods
to begin their feeding, courting and mating
cycle.The rewards are huge as Gordon gains
the trust of Lily and June and captures the
emerging personalities of the individual
cubs to provide a captivating look into
the life of the black bear.
The Caribbean is the embodiment of paradise with its crystal blue waters, diverse
coral reefs and lush tropical forests, yet many
dark and mysterious secrets lie behind its
beauty. This series explores the environmental drama and intrigue of paradise: how
volcanoes and other forces shaped the
Caribbean islands; the impact of devastating
hurricanes; and tales of pirates and shipwrecks.

teams of pioneering vets who are using the
most cutting-edge techniques, often adapted
from human medicine, to transform the
way sick animals are treated across the
globe. In this three-part series, discover the
fascinating stories of animals, including an
elephant in Laos with a gunshot wound
needing an x-ray at a human hospital; a
plastic surgeon giving a rhinoceros a skin
graft operation; the removal of an elephant’s massive tusk after he develops an
infection; a prosthetic tail to help a dolphin
called Fuji swim again.

the African savanna about 200,000 years
ago. Today, seven billion of us live on this
planet. How did we beat the odds and
spread from continent to continent? This
fascinating new five-part series tells the
story of how early Homo sapiens moved
around the globe and became the dominant
human species. Each episode focuses on a
different continent and meets the earliest
Homo sapiens there. Where did they come
from? How did they get there? What role
did art, culture and technology play in their
lives? Whom did they meet along the way?
Researchers once thought that our ancestors kept a distance from other types of
humans, but DNA now reveals they mated
with them and interbred. As a result, our
species is a patchwork of modern and
ancient humans. In essence, we are all
hybrids.
With a camera crew winding its way
around the world, the series dives into the
underwater caves of Yucatan, soars above

On June 6, 1944, the Allies launched an
armada to invade the Normandy beaches and
liberate Europe from the Nazis. Hundreds of
ships sank while running the gauntlet of mines
and bunkers, creating one of the world’s
largest underwater archaeological sites. Now,
teams of divers, submersibles and underwater
robots identify Allied craft that fell victim to
German shellfire, mines and torpedoes. The
program presents a blow-by-blow account of
D-Day events. The ingenious science that
helped the Allies overcome the German defenses and first-hand accounts from Allied veterans who have returned to the site of this epic
battle are featured. Also, the show reveals
how the Allies’ intricate planning and
advanced technology were vital to assure the
success of the most ambitious and risky military operation ever launched.
Colditz Castle, a notorious prisoner of war
camp in Nazi Germany, was supposed to be an
escape-proof site. But in World War II, a group
of British officers hatched a plan to break
free. In a secret attic workshop, they constructed a two-man glider out of bed sheets
and floorboards. The plan was to fly to freedom from the castle’s roof, but the war ended
before they could put it to the test. Now a team
of aeroengineers and carpenters rebuild the
glider in the same attic using the same materials. As the hair-raising launch at 90 feet
updraws near, the program explores the Colditz
legend and exposes the secrets of other clever
and audacious escapes. After a 70-year wait,
the team finally finds out if the legendary
glider plan would have succeeded.

As early as 1942, Adolf Hitler knew that
the Allied armies massing in Britain would try
to cross the English Channel and blast their
way into his “Fortress Europe” at some
point. Attempting to secure Nazi-occupied
Europe from an Allied invasion, Hitler
demanded the construction of a 2,000-mile
long chain of fortresses, gun emplacements,
tank traps and obstacles from France in the
south to Norway in the north. This is the story
of how this vast engineering project took
huge quantities of raw materials and men from
all over the Third Reich and faced its ultimate
test on D-Day.

y own introduction to a public television station came via KAET Channel 8,
right after the station started broadcasting from Tempe in 1961. The “AET”
stood for Arizona Educational Television, which accurately described its early
and rather dry instructional format.
One could obviously learn a lot from watching KAET, but what drew me in as a young view-
er was that my friend Luis’s dad taught Spanish on the air. There being at the time very

little local programming in southern Arizona, we considered him a true celebrity, and we often
tuned in to see him. This, of course, lured us into other programming.
The Martinez family soon departed on a Peace Corps mission to Brazil, and Luis and I
grew up and moved on to other things and other places. But local PBS stations always carried programming I liked, and over the years, and
wherever I lived, I always found myself tuning in
to my local PBS affiliate.
Since joining Vegas PBS some 18 months ago,
I’ve learned I am not alone in this regard. Many
of you have shared with me that you also are

fans, and that you either have a strong personal
connection to our programs or are related to someone who does. Here at our office, it’s not
something we take for granted.

On D-Day, June 6, 1944, the rookie 29th Infantry Division faced some of
due to land on the beach with Company C of the 2nd Rangers on its right
flank. The men were assaulted by the relentless fire of automatic weapons
and order was quickly lost. In fact, Company A was out of action for the
day a mere fifteen minutes after landing. Estimates of its casualties
ranged as high as nearly 70 percent of the men. In June 2014, a handful
of the 29th Infantry Division survivors made a trip back to Normandy to
recognize the 70th anniversary of D-Day. The aging veterans also visited
the Normandy American cemetery to say their final goodbyes to their
friends who did not leave Omaha Beach alive.

The New Detectives
Fridays at 9 p.m. starting on June 12
This fascinating series tells the stories of men and women who use science to bring
killers to justice. The series reenacts and dramatizes murders that are committed
in North America. It showcases the forensic technology employed to convict the
criminals, showing how rapidly it is evolving. The program highlights how forensics
can solve crimes by the analysis of such seemingly obscure clues as tire tracks,
bullet fragments and hair samples and putting disparate pieces together. The
series features footage of interviews with forensic pathologists, cold case detectives and victims’ families, detailing the process carried out in each case.

Forensic technology
The death of a matriarch reveals secrets and
gives rise to a prolonged battle for the
family inheritance in this addictive Danish
drama. This is a narrative about the consequences of great societal changes and
upheaval and a modern family portrait. The
series plays out at the legendary manor
Grønnegaard, where the internationally
renowned artist Veronika Grønnegaard has
lived an eccentric and colorful life since the
wild and free 1960s. The chaotic childhood
of Veronika’s four adult children has left
its mark on them in very different ways.
They have scattered to the four winds until
Veronika dies and they gather to settle her
estate. Just before she dies, Veronika leaves
the manor to her daughter Signe, who was
given up for adoption. What follows is an
explosion of secrets and lies borne of a
destructive family history.

Americans are living longer than ever before, and older adults will soon outnumber the young.
Today, family caregivers are providing 90 percent of parent care, in addition to balancing work
and family. Who will take care of those who can no longer care for themselves? How will the
nation adapt to ensure that adequate care can be provided for both the caregivers and for
those being cared for? This thoughtful special seeks to answer these questions as it explores
the emotional, health and financial challenges that many caregivers face every day. Eight families welcome the filmmakers into their lives. The compelling stories bring to life a phenomenon faced by millions of baby boomers who are approaching retirement themselves. The film
also poignantly captures how families cope with the financial burdens brought on by this often
unanticipated responsibility.
