I want to thank all our regular parishioners for helping to make our church such a warm, caring and friendly community of faith. I greatly appreciate the extra time and dedication they have given. I thank all of the altar guild members for all the extra hours of work that were involved in making our church so beautiful and liturgically appropriate for the celebrations of Holy Week and Easter. Finally, I would like to thank all those behind the scenes who helped in any way to set-up and/or decorate. I also thank our Liturgy Committee, altar servers, lectors, EMEs, ushers, students, Station of the Cross participants who did so much to make this Easter so beautiful. Treasures From Our Tradition Our tradition has a way of honoring age-old customs, and is patient with how practices unfold in different places. The name of today's feast illustrates this well. English is a Germanic language, and our word "Easter," or German "Oester," points back to the pagan goddess Eoestre, the star of the vernal equinox feast. The Greek title "Pasch" reaches back in a more helpful manner to the Hebrew "Pesach," or "Passover." "Paschal Triduum" may be slow to replace "Easter" in our vocabulary, but it is clearer about the mystery we celebrate today, the culmination of three days laden with mystery and meaning. You can hear the older term, and the resistance to English influence, in the Irish "Casca" and Scottish "Pask." Romance languages stay close to the deep paschal tradition, with the French "Pâques," Spanish "Pascua" and Italian "Pasqua." Memories of our pagan past with "Oester" will not soon fade away: even Japanese Christians are under her spell, for today's feast is called " I-suta." Swahili, a young language, takes the more traditional route with "Pasaka." Each language yields a rich insight into the feast. Spanish includes a sense that today is a "big Sunday" by adding the designation "Pascua" to the greatest feasts, such as "Pascua de la Natividad" (Christmas). Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord 6 April 5, 2015 An Easter Message from our Pastor “And he said to them, "Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen.” Mk 16: 6 Easter celebrates Jesus’ Resurrection, his triumph over sin and death. His victory is our own victory and it becomes the fundamental base and truth of our Christian Faith. A Paschal hymn that we use to sing every year in my home Parish calls Easter, "La reina de todas la estaciones," “the Queen of all seasons.” "día esplendoroso," "la fiesta regia de todas las fiestas". "Éste es el día que hizo el Señor, sea nuestra alegría y nuestro gozo". “Splendorous day,” “The Feast of all Feasts.” This is the day, that the Lord has made, we will rejoice, we will rejoice, and be glad in it, and be glad in it” The Paschal Proclamation is concrete, clear and very profound: “The Tomb is empty,” “Jesus has risen.” What was a fatality for most became the new beginning for many. All of the Gospel writers give testimony to this universal and historical event. From the beginning their testimony and the inner change they experienced in their lives were vital and impressed in that rising “new community,” called “The Way.” Easter Sunday “is not” just the conclusion of Holy Week, we would not write “The End,” to the story. Rather it is the beginning of a more joyful, truthful and more meaningful personal and universal story. It is the reminder of what our faith and God’s message is about: “New Life.” Today then is a joyful Day. It is the day of celebrating our deliverance from the bondage of death to the joy of life, from the slavery of sin to the over exultant grace, from grief to consolation and comfort, from sadness to joy, from despair to hope. Today, Jesus invites us to sing all together: “Alleluia” and to bring this message of hope and life to every corner of our culture. (Alleluia / Hallelujah, comes from a Hebrew phrase ('hallelu yah') which means Praise the Lord! 'Hallel' is the Hebrew word for 'praise', and 'Yah' is the short form of 'Yahweh - the name for God.). Pope Francis reminded us, a year ago, that as witnesses of Christ’s resurrection, we are called to invite everyone to “Come and see!”. He added that “ In every human situation, marked by frailty, sin and death, the Good News is no mere matter of words, but a testimony to unconditional and faithful love: it is about leaving ourselves behind and encountering others, being close to those crushed by life’s troubles, sharing with the needy, standing at the side of the sick, elderly and the outcast… “Come and see!”: Love is more powerful, love gives life, love makes hope blossom in the wilderness.” With this joyful certainty in our hearts, today we turn to you, risen Lord! Help us to seek you and to find you, to realize that we have a Father and are not orphans; that we can love and adore you. Let us celebrate all together this season (and always in our lives) the powerful message of this Sunday. Let us today and always experience times of joy, charity, forgiveness, peace, new births, mercy, justice and GLORY.” Have a Blessed and joyful Easter! Fr.
