Right away we hear that mercy is something that ALL of us must practice: “WHOEVER has food” must think of some ways to practice this work of mercy. Most of us have plenty of food and clothes, so these words are addressed to each one of us: “Whoever has two cloaks should share with the person who has none. And whoever has food should do likewise.” These words are the beginning of the Good News of God’s mercy. They were pronounced by John the Baptist as he “preached good news to the people.” But the “good news” preached by John the Baptist was not limited to words about giving food to the hungry. He preached the ultimate Good News of God’s mercy which was that “one mightier than I is coming. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” Then John the Baptist uses an interesting poetic and prophetic analogy to describe Christ. He used a very common example from everyday life. He said that Christ would come with “his winnowing fan is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” A “winnowing fan” was a kind of rake that farmers would use to toss grain into the air on a raised platform called a “threshing floor”. The wind would blow away the leaves and husks (the “chaff”) and the heavier grain would fall straight down onto the platform. This does not mean that the Lord came to toss us into the air. Although sometimes in life we may feel like we are being tossed around like a ragdoll! The meaning is that when the Lord comes, He wants to find that we are more like the grains of wheat which are heavier and more substantial than the delicate husks which cover the grains and which are eliminated by winnowing and blown away by the wind. Jesus wants to find in us some solid virtue so that He can gather us together into the Eucharist like the grains of wheat are gathered to form one bread. First the wheat must be baked by fire to form bread. This is an astonishing image of Christ. He comes to gather us and baptize us with His Holy Spirit of fire to unite us to Himself in the Eucharist!
