From the Pastor’s Laptop
“Whoever has food”
Father Mark Wagner
Today is Gaudete
Sunday,
the
joyful
Sunday with which we
begin the Jubilee Year of
Mercy! Right away we
hear that mercy is
something that ALL
of us must practice: “WHOEVER has
food” must think of some ways to
practice this work of mercy. Most of us
have plenty of food and clothes, so these
words are addressed to each one of us:
“Whoever has two cloaks should share
with the person who has none. And
whoever has food should do
likewise.”
These words are the
beginning of the Good News of God’s
mercy. They were pronounced by John
the Baptist as he “preached good news
to the people.”
But the “good news” preached by
John the Baptist was not limited to
words about giving food to the
hungry. He preached the ultimate Good
News of God’s mercy which was that
“one mightier than I is coming. He will
baptize you with the Holy Spirit and
fire.” Then John the Baptist uses an
interesting poetic and prophetic analogy
to describe Christ. He used a very
common example from everyday
life.
He said that Christ would come
with “his winnowing fan is in his hand to
clear his threshing floor and to gather the
wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will
burn with unquenchable fire.”
A
“winnowing fan” was a kind of rake that
farmers would use to toss grain into the
air on a raised platform called a “threshing
floor”. The wind would blow away the
leaves and husks (the “chaff”) and the
heavier grain would fall straight down
onto the platform.
This does not mean that the Lord
came to toss us into the air. Although
sometimes in life we may feel like we are
being tossed around like a ragdoll! The
meaning is that when the Lord comes, He
wants to find that we are more like the
grains of wheat which are heavier and
more substantial than the delicate husks
which cover the grains and which are
eliminated by winnowing and blown
away by the wind. Jesus wants to find in
us some solid virtue so that He can gather
us together into the Eucharist like the
grains of wheat are gathered to form one
bread. First the wheat must be baked by
fire to form bread. This is an astonishing
image of Christ. He comes to gather us
and baptize us with His Holy Spirit of fire
to unite us to Himself in the Eucharist!

DEL LAPTOP DEL PÁRROCO, Padre Mark
www.vatican.com
“El Que Tenga Qué Comer…”
Padre Mark Wagner
Hoy es Domingo de
Gaudete, el domingo de
alegría
con
el
cual
¡comenzamos el Año de
Jubileo de Misericordia!
Ahí mismo escuchamos que
la misericordia es algo que
TODOS tenemos que practicar:
“El que tenga qué comer”
tienen que pensar en algunas
maneras de practicar esta clase
de misericordia. La mayoría de
nosotros tenemos demás
comida y ropa, entonces estas
palabras están dirigidas hacia
cada uno de nosotros: “El que
tenga dos túnicas, dé una al
que no tiene; y el que tenga
qué comer, haga otro
tanto.” Estas palabras son el
comienzo de la Buena Nueva
de la misericordia de
Dios.
Fueron pronunciadas
por San Juan el Bautista
mientras él “anunciaba al
pueblo la Buena Noticia.”
Pero la “Buena noticia”
anunciaba por Juan el Bautista
no fue limitada a palabras de
dar de comer a los
hambrientos. Él predicaba la
máxima Buena Noticia de la
misericordia de Dios, la cual fue
que “viene uno más poderoso
que yo. Él los bautizará en el
Espíritu Santo y en el
fuego.” Luego, Juan el Bautista
usa una analogía interesante,
poética, y profética para
describir al Cristo.
Usa un
ejemplo común de la vida
cotidiana.
Dice que el Cristo vendrá
con la horquilla para limpiar su
era y recoger el trigo en su
granero. Pero consumirá la paja
en el fuego inextinguible.” Una
“horquilla” fue una clase de
rastrillo que los graneros
usaban para tirar el grano en el
aire en una plataforma llamada
una “era”. El viento soplaría las
hojas del grano (la “paja”) y los
granos más pesados se caerían
en la plataforma.
Esto no quiere decir que el
Señor vino a tirarnos en el aire,
aunque a veces podemos sentir
como si ¡estuviéramos tirados
como muñecas de trapo! El
significado es que cuando
venga el Señor quiere
encontrar que somos más
como los granos de trigo que
son más pesados y más
substanciales que la paja
delicada que cubre los granos y
que es eliminada por el
apaleamiento y soplada por el
viento.
Jesús quiere encontrarnos
en alguna virtud sólida para
poder recogernos juntos en la
Eucaristía como granitos de
trigo que son formados para
hacer un pan. Primero, hay
que hornear el trigo con el
fuego para formar el pan. Esto
es una imagen asombrosa de
Cristo.
¡Él viene para
recogernos y bautizarnos con
su Espíritu Santo de fuego para
unirnos a Él en la Eucaristía!

A man wakes up after sleeping
under an ADVERTISED blanket
on an ADVERTISED mattress
and pulls off ADVERTISED pajamas
bathes in an ADVERTISED shower
shaves with an ADVERTISED razor
brushes his teeth
with ADVERTISED toothpaste
washes with ADVERTISED soap
puts on ADVERTISED clothes
drinks a cup
of ADVERTISED coffee
drives to work
in an ADVERTISED car
and then . . . .
refuses to ADVERTISE
believing it doesn’t pay.
Later if business is poor
he ADVERTISES it for sale.
