Introducing Our New Pew Missal
The decision to change
missal publishers from
OCP to Ignatius Press
was made after
reviewing all aspects of
the choices: musical,
liturgical and pastoral.
For the new liturgical season starting
next weekend, we are changing to the
Pew Missal, an annual subscription
offered for the first time by Ignatius
Press. Assembled with the input of
many US pastors and parish priests, it
includes Mass Readings and Propers
along with hymns for the entire year.
It means no more switching between
missalette and hymnal, replacing and
disposing of quarterly issues, flipping
pages to find the “Nicene Creed” (nope,
haven’t memorized the new translation
yet!) or Mass parts. Each pew rack will
now hold just two copies of the Pew
Missal instead of two seasonal Today’s
missalettes and a hard cover hymnal.
Although the new missal integrates
189 hymns, 51 of which are in our
current hymnal, it does not have some
of our parish favorites since OCP owns
the copyrights. Be assured that we are
looking into ways to address that
concern.
In order to try to give everyone at
Mass something to sing about, at the
10 AM Mass and one Sunday a month
at the 12 Noon, the congregation will
continue to use the Voices songbooks,
which will be stored at the ends of the
pews. For those who attend the
Saturday 4:30 PM Mass and Sunday
8 AM Mass, you may be pleased to
find some familiar traditional hymns
are back.
With the introduction of this new
missal, we are striving for active
participation at Mass to bring us into a
closer encounter with Almighty God
through the Sacred Liturgy.

Harrigan’s Pub’s Free Thanksgiving for Seniors
Route 71 & Baltimore Blvd
Harrigan’s Pub in Sea Girt is again hosting a free
dinner for seniors on Thanksgiving Day at noon.
A full, sit-down meal will be served.
The Knights of Columbus is coordinating the
annual event and will provide rides if needed.

Giving Tree 2014
The Christmas season is fast
approaching, and St. Mark's Social
Concerns Committee is pleased to
sponsor the Giving Tree, which
provides gifts to those who are less
fortunate. Requests have come to
us from charitable agencies,
such as Mercy Center,
Habcore, Madonna House,
and Epiphany House. As in
prior years, the committee is asking for your support.
The response has always been exceptionally generous,
and we hope this year's effort will continue to show our
desire to share with others. The 2014 Giving Tree is
already up in the vestibule. Please take an ornament
from the tree, and follow the directions listed. (Note:
Some gifts are to be wrapped and others unwrapped but all
must have their tags attached. Gift cards must also be tagged
but please do not leave them under the tree. They must be
delivered to the rectory or dropped in the rectory mail slot.)
Please be sure to attach your ornament to your gift,
and pay close attention to the return date, as many
agencies distribute their gifts LONG before Christmas.
Deadline for most gifts is Sunday, December 7th.

Gift for Our Parish Families
The Holy Name Society, with the approval of Msgr.
Flynn, will be giving all parishioners a gift this Christmas.
It is a beautifully written and inspirational book by
Matthew Kelly titled, “Rediscovering Catholicism.” For over
a decade, the author has traveled the globe, sharing
answers and offering the truth. He’s the first to admit,
they aren’t his. They’re the ones that have been taught by
the Church since the first century. They’re the ones that
have been lived by holy and happy men, women and
children of faith since the time of Christ. This book, in a
simple, convincing, and entertaining style, provides
answers that many are looking for in today’s world.
To make sure that all our parish families get a book,
we are handing them out at Christmas Masses and to all
CCD classes and CYO members. This exciting spiritual
initiative needs your prayers of support. More details will
appear in an upcoming bulletin.
Operation Christmas Socks
Who: The Missionaries of Charity sisters visit local prisons on Christmas Day.
Our CYO assists them with this each year.
What: White “crew socks” only and hard candies (no fillings).
When: Collection at Masses on the weekends of November 22-23, and November 29-30.
Where: Please leave white crew socks or a bag of hard candy in the bins labeled
“Operation Christmas Socks.”
Why: Corporal work of mercy to visit the imprisoned. Christmas is best shared with everyone.

The Universe According to Holy Scripture (continued from page 3)
According to Job 26:7, God “hangs the earth on
nothing.” This verse expresses the fact that the earth is
unsupported by any other object—something quite
unnatural for ancient writers to imagine.
The Bible indicates in several places that the universe
has been “stretched out” or expanded. For example,
Isaiah 40:22 teaches that God “stretches out the heavens
like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell
in.” This would suggest that the universe has actually
increased in size since its creation. God has stretched it
out. He has expanded it (and is perhaps still expanding
it). Today, most astronomers acknowledge that the
universe is indeed expanding.
Genesis 22:17 teaches that God would multiply
Abraham’s descendants “as the stars of the heaven, and
as the sand which is on the sea shore.” Genesis 32:12
makes it clear that this represents a number which is
uncountable by humans: “the sand of the sea, which
cannot be numbered for multitude.” These are excellent
analogies. Clearly the sand of the sea and the stars in the
universe cannot be counted exactly by humans, though
they can be roughly estimated.
It was not always believed that the stars were so
numerous. Claudius Ptolemy, an astronomer from
AD 150, cataloged 1,022 stars. The total number of stars
that can be distinctly seen (from both hemispheres under
ideal, dark sky conditions) with the naked eye is around
10,000.
Powerful telescopes today allow us to estimate that
our single galaxy alone contains over 100 billion stars.
And astronomers believe that there are more galaxies in
the visible universe than there are stars in our own
galaxy. When Brother Guy Consolmagno, S.J., an
American Jesuit planetary scientist for the Vatican
Observatory and recipient of the Carl Sagan Award from
the American Astronomical Society, was asked what is
the greatest congruence between his Catholic faith and
his scientific work, he replied, “Beauty. I know I have
touched God when I experience the joy of living in beauty.
The universe is beautiful. It didn’t have to be; it could have
been just logical, or it could have been hopeless chaos. But it
isn’t. It’s beautiful. And the way science can explain it is also
beautiful. Indeed, a good compass to use when testing different
theories is to look for the ones with the greatest internal
elegance.”
And Jesus, our Lord, is King of the Universe!

An Irish Christmas: A Musical Celebration
On Thursday, December 18th, departing from Spring
Lake train station at 3:30 PM, .join a bus trip to the
upper west side of NYC to Symphony Space for a
mirthful evening of storytelling, dancing and seasonal
music of the Christmas season. Tickets are $95 for rear
orchestra concert seats. Dinner is on your own at

Women’s Community Christmas Program
The Manasquan Ministerium invites the women of the
community to the Women's Community Christmas
Program at First Presbyterian Church, 16 Virginia
Avenue in Manasquan on Tuesday, December 2nd at
11:30 AM. This “Gathering of Women Seeking a
Peaceful and Spiritual Approach to Christmas” will be
led by Pastor Reggie Albert of United Methodist Church
of Manasquan. Gathering with feature choirs from
participating churches and a bell choir. Child Care is
available and lunch will follow. This is a time for women
from the local and surrounding communities to come
together to participate in a quieting spiritual worship.

Acción Deferida
Para los que desean obtener el estatus de “Acción
Deferida” para evitar la deportación se puede hacer una
solicitud por las “Catholic Charities “ de Lakewood. Las
Catholic Charities, pueden procesar su solicitud de
renovación o la aplicación inicial. Para ser elegible a este
programa, tiene que ser menor de 32 años, haber estado
en este país entre el 2007 y 2012, haber llegado a los
Estados Unidos antes de los16 años, haberse graduado
de la High School o tener un certificado de GED, y no
tener ninguna convicción contra la ley. Para más
