NOvEMber 2, 2014 All souls’ day Dear Parishioners, Christ the King’s 2015 Stewardship of Treasure Drive takes place this weekend, November 1 and 2. A letter and pledge envelope were mailed to all registered parishioners and extra pledge envelopes are available in the pews. This is a time to make a commitment to return to God a portion of the many blessings He has bestowed on us. It is a time to pray, reflect and make a commitment to support Christ the King parish for the year 2015. Pledges are fulfilled through donations to the parish offertory - whether they be through the first collection at weekend Masses, through on-line donations or through gifts of stock to the Cathedral. 2699 Peachtree Road, NE Atlanta, Georgia 30305 404-233-2145 www.cathedralofchristtheking.org Please bring your completed pledge envelope to the Cathedral in the coming weeks or mail it to the Church. It will take the financial efforts of each of us to continue the mission of Christ the King parish – “To Know, Love and Serve as Jesus Did”. All Souls’ Day WHAT’S INSIDE: Sandwich Making Page 2 Morning of Reflection Page 3 CKS Events Page 5 Mass of Remembrance Page 7 Adopt a Family 2014 Page 8 Around the Archdiocese Page 8 Hispanic Pages Pages 10-11 All Souls' Day is a day of prayer for the dead, particularly but not exclusively one's relatives. In Western Christianity the annual celebration is now held on November 2 and is associated with All Saints' Day (November 1) and its vigil, Halloween (October 31). In the liturgical books of the western Catholic Church (the Latin Church) it is called The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, and is celebrated annually on November 2, even if this date falls on a Sunday. The readings and prayers for this celebration find their origins in our funeral rite. It is one of the most beautiful and expressive in the Roman Missal and is of very ancient origin. In pre-Apostolic times the Jews prayed that the immortal souls of the just might have requiem aeternam (“rest eternal”), and sources from the 2nd century mention this celebration of the Eucharist. All Souls Day, the feast for the commemoration of the dead, was instituted by Saint Odilo, fourth abbot of the famous Benedictine monastery at Cluny, in 998. In its actual form the Requiem Mass can be traced back to the 8th and 9th centuries. The texts of the Mass, though ancient, continue as vital, living expressions of consolation for the present and hope for the future. The Cathedral will hold a Remembrance Mass on November 5. Please see Page 7 for details. If you can not join us, but you have a prayer need, you may email us at [email protected]. You will also receive packing instructions, suggested gift items, and delivery times. We ask that you, the sponsor family, provide 2-3 gifts per family member and a food gift certificate. We estimate $50 -$75 per family member plus the food gift certificate. All gifts need to be dropped off at the back of the Cathedral in the school parking lot on Thursday, December 11 (4:30 -7:30 pm). You may join us on Saturday, December 14 (12:30-2:30 pm) to distribute the gifts to some of the families at the Cathedral in the back parking lot.
