Teaching kids to be safe around unfamiliar animals We’ve all had the experience of someone else’s dog a p proaching us. Uncertainty about the dog’s intent can be frightening, especially to young children. The ASPCA website provides parents with advice on teaching their children to read a dog’s body language and to identify signs that it wants to be left alone. The website also helps parents teach their children how to protect themselves from an overexcited pet by demonstrating the basics of dog bite prevention, such as rolling into a ball, protecting hands and face and calling for help, rather than running or screaming if chased by a dog. Sunday, November 23, 2014 Dear Parishioners, Next Thursday is Thanksgiving Day. Family members scattered around different cities and time zones come together to enjoy a meal and share stories, but most importantly, to give thanks to God for a good harvest, an answered prayer, a recovery from illness, passing an important exam, good health, a broken relationship reconciled, etc.. As Catholic Christians ‘thanksgiving’ is not a one day event for us. Every time we celebrate the Eucharist which means “thanksgiving” we call to mind God’s goodness and express our gratitude as a community in prayer, song, communion and worship. We are a Eucharistic community i.e. grateful people. As a parish we have set aside this weekend as “Gratitude Sunday” to renew our call to be good stewards of our gifts and recommit our trust in God’s generous and unfailing providence. We are asking each member of our parish family to re-evaluate their financial responsibilities and capabilities. After this prayerful discernment, as an act of faith and responsibility, we ask that each member or family makes a commitment as to how much to contribute to our regular Sunday collection. This enables our parish to plan and budget our ministries and programs efficiently and effectively for the coming year. Last weekend the Gomez & Dimas Family, Ken & Angela Rucker, Ian Tompkins, & Lydia Velasco shared with our community their experience of God’s goodness through our parish church and how they are responding in kind by the way they support our parish with their service and financial contribution. On behalf of St. Joseph’s, I thank them and many of our parishioners like them. They have taken their baptismal calling seriously by their active and committed participation in building up the “Body of Christ” here at St. Joseph. By their sacrifice, generosity, service, and support, they make our parish a “home” for all our families where faith, hope, love, peace, and joy are nurtured with Christ as the center and source.
