St. Bartholomew Church 4949 W. Patterson Ave. Chicago, Illinois 60641 773-286-7871 www.stbartholomew.net ST. BART’S PARISH MISSION STATEMENT St. Bartholomew Parish is a faith-filled people, guided by the Holy Spirit and the Gospel, striving to hear and spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to all… to CELEBRATE together because the Lord is in our midst and dwelling within us. to CARE about each other, sharing our joys and sorrows. to GROW in awareness of Jesus, alive and active in our lives. to INVITE everyone to share in one another’s goodness, talents, hopes and visions. The people of God at St. Bartholomew REACH OUT to all because we need each other. The Fire Within en concierto. ¡Gracias! Chuck Kessell, Director Musical, 773-858-5325 Page 3 The story of Bartimaeus is interesting and powerful on so many levels. Here is a blind man who found himself in a crowd surrounding Jesus, who was leaving Jericho at the time. Not seeing Jesus (of course), instead he cries out “Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me.” Some of the Apostles (who sometimes acted like security for a Rock Star), told him to quiet down. But he persisted and Jesus told them to bring him. Even though I am sure Jesus knew right away what the man wanted, he asked Bartimaeus “What do you want of me?” The answer simply put was…. “Go your way your faith has saved you.” Wow…no fancy prayers, no laying on of hands, or mumbo jumbo: Christ simply told him that his faith saved him. Here is a powerful lesson for us. Our Faith can save us! Believe and then ask. Believe and then ask, amazingly simple when we are paying attention. I also like Mark’s version of Jesus’ life and works, since he is so direct and very simple about putting things into words. In today’s world, well we know the things that are horrific, that cause pain to us, our families, our communities, or world. Often we think that nothing can be done…but we would be wrong. Here is one of those solutions, if we are paying attention. Believe-in essence-have faith in God, and ask for what we need. I don’t mean ask for $50.00 to go to the Casino and gamble, or to ask for a Cubs Win, but ask for those things that truly matter. Only you know what matters in your life, that is to say you and God. Healing Bartimaeus was another example of the great love Jesus had for people in general. I know for sure having studied Mark’s writing over the years, he didn’t insert this story about Jesus just to fill space or just to give another example of Jesus’ great power. Again…it is simply put. Believe and ask. And so I trouble you to ask yourself, just what do you believe in? If you believe in the Triune God, then all things are possible. Nothing that matters is off the table, and much is absolutely miraculous! Ask yourself where the miraculous is in your life. Maybe start with your own life in whatever shape it is in. Your life is truly miraculous! All the people you know or did know, their lives were/are miraculous. It’s a place to ground you back in faith. It is simple….Believe and then ask. I would add that you need to pay attention first. Bring that faith with you on a daily basis, and especially when you come as community on the weekend. Nourish your faith in the sacraments, and in serving each other. Then go back into the community to witness that faith, in words but more importantly in action. Now on to something completely different. As you know, our Music Ministry has another identity, that of THE FIRE WITHIN. It comprises the Adult English Choir, The Spanish Coro, and the Children’s Choir, along with cantors and musicians among us. So Mark your calendars for NOVEMBER 21, that’s a Saturday at 7:30PM for Our Concert. It’s right here at St. Bart’s in Church. Tickets are $10.00 each. Our proceeds from this event go to assist the parish in something tangible, and to allow us some budget to get some music. We will have some featured artists as well, more on that later. Bring your family, and friends. There will be all sorts of music, Secular, Sacred, English, Spanish, and maybe a Patriotic piece or two as well. I promise it will be a great evening together. THE FIRE WITHIN In concert. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 7:30PM in Church. You can get tickets at the door. Early ticket sales will begin in early November. Tell your Friends and neighbors. We’d like to fill our Church with folks! Call me, Chuck Kessell, if you have any questions at 773-858-5325 Finally, I want to sincerely ask you to consider becoming a Music Minister in our parish, as a Chorister in the English Choir, the Spanish Coro, The Children’s Choir, or possibly to get our Teen Group off the ground. All of these groups rehearse just once a week normally and then sing at one Mass. English Choir –Thursday at 7:30PM in church. Spanish Coro-Wednesday at 7:00PM in church. Children’s Choir-Wednesday from 4:005:30PM in Church. Do you play an instrument? Talk to me and we’ll see if we can use it. Thanks! CATHOLIC EDUCATION Page 8 TRUE BLINDNESS VERDADERA CEGUERA Bartimaeus caused a stir. Normally he sat by the side of the road being a “good blind beggar.” But one day Jesus passed nearby. Bartimaeus jumped up and called out to Jesus. We can imagine him turning toward the direction of the commotion and noise. Bartimaeus probably had his arms outstretched as he shouted out to the son of David. The people who knew him were embarrassed by his outburst. They tried to hush him up and get him to sit back down by the roadside. Their actions spoke volumes: “Bartimaeus, you’re not fit for Jesus.” But it was okay for them and other “sighted” people to follow Jesus. In today’s readings, we learn that true blindness is not a condition of our eyes but of our hearts.
