FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK… Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Francis de Sales Church, This Saturday, July 4, is Independence Day, a day to celebrate and reflect upon the things that we as a nation value the most, especially our liberty. During this time of year, the United States Catholic Bishops have asked all Catholics to reflect upon our religious liberty, declaring June 21 through July 4 as the “Fortnight for Freedom.” The bishops have published daily reflections on the Fortnight for Freedom which can be found on the website of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, www.archmil.org. Included in these reflections is the following: “In the opening chapter of Declaration on Religious Liberty, the Council Fathers at Vatican II forthrightly declared that ‘the human person has a right to religious freedom.’” This right is founded upon the intrinsic dignity of the human person. From God’s revelation we know that the dignity of human beings resides in their being created in the image and likeness of God (Gn 1:27). What human beings believe concerning God is of supreme importance. Religious belief lies at the very center of who we are in relation to what is most central and cherished in our lives. Therefore, the Council insists that the religious convictions of individuals or groups should never be coerced but must be held freely, protected by a civil constitutional right.” (“Reflections for the Fortnight for Freedom,” Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.) Religious liberty is at the core of our American values, and it is essential that this right be preserved and protected. As we pray for our nation during this time, let us pray for the wisdom and courage to do all that we can to protect our freedom of religion. Please come to our “Fortnight for Freedom Holy Hour: Bilingual Prayer Service with Benediction” today, Sunday, June 28, at 3:00 p.m. in the church. Happy Independence Day! God’s Blessings, Fr. FAITH WITH A FACE—VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT When Pam Lenon's kids were small they would help her dig on their property. She didn’t know it at the time, but while her children were looking for “buried treasure,” she was discovering a God-given talent of designing gardens. She started planting and creating, catching the attention of her friends and neighbors. Soon people started asking to hire her to do their landscapes. This was 28 years ago when her now-very-successful company, Gardenscapes, was born, and her business has since exceeded her wildest expectations. Taking classes and seminars along the way, her knowledge grew, and her business expanded. “It’s hard to explain, but the land speaks to me. It shows me the vision,” she said when asked how she plans her designs. In 1994 when the SFDS Parish Hall was being built, Fr. Dave Braun asked Pam to do a landscape plan. Not only did she design the garden, but she donated the plants and labor to install it. The garden is located between the rectory and the Parish Center. “I decided to do a Biblical Garden...all of the flowers there are mentioned at some point in scripture.” The plants, which are used in our present-day lives, were also part of the everyday lives of the people in the Bible. They are the living connection between us and the people of those earlier times. For the past 22 years Pam and her crew have maintained that garden, the seasonal pots by the front doors and the “hill” in front of the church. “It’s actually been a gift that has been given back to me,” she said. “I’m honored to have had the opportunity to design the garden and watch it grow. It’s been very rewarding!” Thank you, Pam, for creating this beautiful space for people to reflect and feel closer to nature and to God. Your talents and generosity are so very much appreciated!
