Construido entre los años 1900-1914, el Convento fue
sede de las Hermanas de la Caridad “San Vicente de Paul”
y del Colegio Virgen Milagrosa, donde se formaron generaciones de nervenses.
Se compone de un inmueble destinado a viviendas y aulas educativas, una capilla y del conocido como “Edificio
Inglés”, que debe su nombre al estilo arquitectónico de
ventanas recercadas por ladrilleras vistas y estructura simétrica, tan característico de las construcciones industriales
inglesas de la época. El edificio, todavía propiedad de la
que fuera la ‘Rio Tinto Company LTD’, era una de las tantas
obras de carácter social que se llevaron a cabo en toda la
comarca.
Años después, sería cedido a las Hermanas de la Caridad
para que pudieran desempeñar su labor docente, que sólo
se vio interrumpida durante los inicios de la Guerra Civil.
No sería hasta la década de los 90 cuando se produjo el
cese definitivo de sus actividades como colegio concertado,
por no adaptarse sus instalaciones a la normativa vigente.
Pese a ello, esta congregación sigue siendo una de las instituciones más valoradas y queridas por los habitantes de
la localidad.
There are documents that certify the existence of a church
devoted to the worship to San Bartolomé from the year
1599, as it was stated on a disappeared inscription. Unfortunately it was destroyed by a fire at the beginning of the
Spanish Civil War.
The current temple dates back from 1943, when the construction of the new church of San Bartolomé, patron saint
and perpetual major of Nerva, started. Its frontage has a
simple composition and it is topped by a triangular bell gable formed by two empty bodies were the bells are placed.
On the inside it has a Greek-cross plan, with a central and
two lateral naves with small attached chapels and the sacristy. In its high altar, one thing stands out: the big picture made by the distinguished painter José María Labrador,
where the martyrdom and glorification is represented.
The 24th August, the big day in Nerva, the church is the
scene for the religious celebrations in honour of the Saint,
who goes out in procession through the streets in town
that night.
The Church as it can be seen nowadays is the result of a
huge restoration process carried out recently to improve the
facilities and give back to the temple its primitive aspect.
