This Thursday, in the Gym at 7:00 p.m.

Welcome to the Advent Season, the time when we remember
especially the love of our Blessed Mother, and her role in the
Incarnation of Jesus! Because of Mary’s centrality in the story of
our redemption, many Catholic Churches use the color navy blue
to decorate during this season, and reserve the historic violet or
purple color for the more penitential season of Lent. However
you choose to remind your families of the coming birth of Jesus,
remember to include our Lady, for she is the first to receive
Salvation, (the merits of Jesus applied to her soul the moment she
was conceived… without sin! The Immaculate Conception,
celebrated December 8th) the first to be a disciple of Jesus, and
the first to enjoy the promised life, body and soul, in Heaven. If
you want to know how to please God, how to praise Jesus, how
to be fully cooperative with the Holy Spirit… Mary is for you!

WE ASK YOUR
COOPERATION
When handing in announcements of an
event for your group or organization,
please list a contact person and phone
number for parishioners to call for
further information. In many cases
parishioners call the church office and
we do not know the finer details that most people
want. Many times we find ourselves in a position of
knowing little to nothing about an event because we
are not privy to the information other than time and
date.
On weekends we are finding a number of homeless
people soliciting parishioners before and after Masses.
We obviously cannot tell you not to give money to
anyone, but we are beginning to develop a reputation
among the homeless as being generous. We have an
excellent and willing Outreach Office to assist
individuals in need during the week. Most weekend
people are only looking for a quick way of getting
money, not assistance. We also remind you to make
sure that your cars are locked, and no electronic items
visible on the car seats when you are attending Mass.
Almsgiving-An Expression of Gratitude. Almsgiving opens our hearts to the
realization that God blesses us through those we serve.
FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT
Get On The Bus! Be Ready To Jump Off At Any Time!
Last week we celebrated the Feast of Christ the King, the last Sunday of our outgoing Church year. Today is
the First Sunday in Advent and the beginning of our new Church year. The readings of today’s Mass urge us
to face the realities of life. Many people want to enjoy their life but either of two things happen. Either they
spend years of toil and energy trying to set up a situation where they can 'enjoy', but never actually 'reach'
their goal; or they 'enjoy' by actually escaping from the day to day realities through indulging in alcohol,
gambling, drugs, sex, material indulgence or any combination of these. People, as the Gospel says, are
coerced “with debauchery and drunkenness and the cares of life”. Many of these cares are, if they could only
realize it, of their own making. What is our greatest enemy? Is it not
having enough money? Is it people we see threatening our livelihood,
rivals in work or business? Basically, our greatest enemies are fear and
anxiety, especially about the future. Many of our choices and decisions
are because of these fears and anxieties. Reading today's Gospel, one
would think we have more than enough to worry and be anxious about.
When we take a bus we know our destination and we know, more or
less, how much time we need to get there. But on the "Bus of life" we
also need to know our real destination and not just one we dream about.
Unlike riding on a bus, we don't know how much time we have for the
journey. For some it may be very long (90 plus years). For others it may
be much shorter (30, 20, 10 years or even only a few months or weeks).
Actually, the length of the journey is not important, although we worry
about it a lot. What is important, is what we do during the journey.
On a bus, you have people who chat. Some are studying the horse-racing
or sports pages of the paper, others are apparently doing nothing or day
dreaming. For many, the journey is only an unavoidable means to get to
their destination and has no value in itself. Yet there are others who are
fully aware of what's going on as they ride. They're aware of their
surroundings, of the people around them. They may admire the beauty of
a morning sky or the loveliness of trees or buildings they pass on their way. The journey and the destination
are part of one reality. The going is as important as the arriving, one contributes to the other.
In the journey of life, today’s readings suggests our approach should be similar. If we want to celebrate the
First Coming of Jesus and prepare for His Second Coming, then the way to do it is to be aware of His coming
into every moment of every day. The Scripture for today tells us that on the bus of life:
A. Don't be afraid, don't worry. Fear, worry and anxiety don't solve any problems. Fear, worry and
anxiety are about things that do not yet exist and most probably will never exist as we imagine them.
“Why worry? If you worry, you will die; if you don’t worry, you will die! So, again, why worry?”
B. Improve your relations with the people around you. A good life consists not so much in the kind of
work we do or how “successful” we are, but how we've related with other people; with family, friends,
colleagues and total strangers.
However, there is still a third coming which forms an important and indispensable link between the First and
Second Comings. That is what is spoken about in our Second Reading. It's the welcoming of Jesus into our
lives in the here and now. This is something which takes place every day. By it we acknowledge the First
Coming of Jesus in Bethlehem and prepare for the Second Coming at an unknown future date.
My sisters and brothers, get on the bus, enjoy the ride, but be ready to jump off at any time! Be ready to meet
the Lord whenever He calls you, whether that be in the very near future or many years from now. The
important thing is: "Be prepared"!
God Bless . . . Deacon Joe

LA CABEZA
En un nuevo adviento más,
cargado de recuerdos y memorias,
Dios llama a nuestro corazón:
Levantaos, alzad la cabeza;
no oteéis mares desconocidos;
mirad a vuestro interior;
allí hay una riqueza mayor
que la que cargaban las naves

Estad siempre despiertos;
porque hay una brújula y una estela
que lleva a puertos de esperanza
a pesar de nuestras quiebras y
naufragios.
Se acerca vuestra liberación:
no buscada con espadas y corazas,
sino con una cruz salvadora
que hermana a hombres de
toda raza.
Adviento que nos dice quedamente:
Levantaos, alzad la cabeza,
Dios sigue creyendo en el hombre;

"Mirad, viene Dios, nuestro Salvador".
hemos podido disfrutar abiertamente. Esperamos verlo y verlo glorioso.
Pero él ya está aquí. Viene ahora, viene siempre; viene "ahora a nuestro

Word. Volunteers are always welcome, if you

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:
During this Year of Consecrated
Life, Pope Francis has asked the faithful
to recognize the special witness that
consecrated women and men offer our
Church and world. In his Apostolic Letter
marking the inauguration of this special
year, he says, “I ask the whole Christian
people to be increasingly aware of the gift which is the
presence of our many consecrated men and women.”
Next weekend, December 5th & 6th, our
parishes will be conducting the Retirement Fund for
Religious collection. This annual appeal benefits some
33,000 senior Catholic Sisters, Brothers, and religious
order priests-women and men who have consecrated their
lives to serving God and the Church.
Our beloved religious women and men gave up
everything to follow Jesus Christ and to serve His Church
in poverty, chastity and obedience. Their evangelical
witness continues to be an inspiration to the faithful
blessed by their loving ministry, their faithful service and
their ardent hope.
Today the church is blessed by their continued
ministry, for they faithfully strive to witness to the love
of Christ, even in their retirement years. Our parishes are
blessed by the presence of religious women and men who
courageously work for the greater glory of God and the
