Dear AP Spanish Students,
Congratulations and welcome to AP Spanish at Prairie Ridge High School. This course will
follow the guidelines established by the AP College Board ( http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/ ). By
taking the course, not only will students strengthen their language skills in Spanish but also they will
undergo preparation for the AP Spanish Language Examination given in the spring. AP Spanish can
be very rewarding for the student as well as for the instructor because of its challenging nature and
because it ensures that motivation levels are high enough so as to be able to attain the goal of fluency
in writing, speaking, listening and reading.
As stated in the Advanced Placement Program Course Description booklet published by the
College Board, This course covers the equivalent of a third year college course in advanced Spanish
writing and conversation. It encompasses aural/oral skills, reading comprehension, grammar, and
composition. And, it has the following objectives:
1. The ability to comprehend formal and informal spoken Spanish;
2. The acquisition of vocabulary and a grasp of structure to allow the easy, accurate reading of
newspaper and magazine articles, as well as of modern literature in Spanish;
3. The ability to compose expository passages; and
4. The ability to express ideas orally with accuracy and fluency.
To achieve these objectives, students will undergo a review (and expansion) of vocabulary
(including idiomatic expressions); they will practice Spanish grammar particularly the more difficult
and complicated concepts; they will write many compositions on topics similar to those on the AP
exam; they will read and study examples of Spanish and Latin American Literature; and they will do
many oral and listening activities in class and at home.
Course Guidelines:
•
Students will be graded on speaking skills. They will record themselves both at school and at
home speaking Spanish spontaneously in response to various prompts.
•
To develop their writing skills, students will be asked to do several compositions for
homework each semester (e.g., summaries of news articles, creative writing pieces that make use of
particular grammar, vocabulary or idiomatic expressions, etc.)
•
In addition to compositions, students will do in class essays on topics similar to those on the
AP Language exam. The essay must be a minimum of 200 words in length, and students will have 45
minutes to complete these essays. The essays must be clear, coherent, well organized, and well
developed, and they must include and make effective use of advanced grammar and idiomatic
expressions.
•
Students will be given in class listening quizzes which will involve listening to a dialogue or
short lecture and, generally speaking, answering multiple choice questions. At times, students may be
asked to give short answer responses.
•
Students will also be given in class reading quizzes. Students will read a written piece (short
story, news article, etc.) and then, in most cases, answer some multiple-choice questions, although they
may also be asked to give short answer responses.
•
Students must participate actively during in class exercises and activities while limiting
themselves to speaking only Spanish (even when asking clarification questions).
Sincerely,
Gabriela Martin, AP Spanish Teacher [email protected]

***NOTE: If you can’t complete these assignments, it won’t hurt your grade. You will have
an entire week after we come back from summer to complete them. However, it is highly
recommended that you stay in touch with Spanish over the summer 
We know that your vacation time is valuable and that it is important to relax and unwind during the
summer months. However, we do not want you to completely lose what you have learned by being
away from Spanish for three months. We have prepared some activities for you to work on over the
summer to maintain your level of preparation for AP Spanish next year. The activities focus on skill
development in the areas of reading and listening, the two skill areas that typically are the most difficult
to develop and merit extra time and attention. Remember that development of skills, just like playing
the piano or shooting a basket, takes time and repetition, so the more you do the better you, personally,
will develop. Without going to a Spanish-speaking country, here are some activities that will help you.
Feel free to contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions.
Based on the recommendations of previous AP classes, these are the requirements you must complete by
the first week of school. (That means they will be collected and worth points.) Try to space them out so
that there is not so much to do at one time.
1. YABLA do a video every week (These should be fun and very helpful to increase your listening comprehension.)
2. Readings Read and answer multiple choice questions
3. Vocabulario: learn 1 new idiomatic expression in Spanish each day (from the list)
and you will have a vocabulary quiz the 1st week of class when you come back to school.
4. Cultura: (1) choose one song in Spanish from groups from three different countries and fill out
the “hoja de canciones” at the end of this packet.
(2) Complete the “hoja de comparación cultural” at the end of this packet
****It is recommended that you practice 15 minutes each week on each skill -- reading, writing,
speaking, and listening. 
5. Gramática: You know that you have grammar issues to deal with (especially verb forms!)
There is the ever-famous Barbara K. Nelson site that is a great tool! It is recommended that you
explore this site and work on the verbs and tenses that are difficult for you.
http://www.colby.edu/~bknelson/SLC/index.php
There is also another recommended site: A concise outline of Spanish structures.

Hoja de la comparación cultural
One of the speaking parts of the AP test requires you to give a 2 minute oral presentation on a specific topic. In
this presentation, you have to compare your own community to an area of the Spanish-speaking world with
which you are familiar. You should demonstrate your understanding of cultural features of the Spanishspeaking world. You should also organize your presentation clearly.
Answer the following question by comparing and contrasting information about your community and a
community from a Spanish-speaking world. In your presentation, you can refer to what you have studied, lived,
and observed, etc.
¿Cuál es el papel del gobierno en el bienestar de una sociedad?
