NOVEMBER 2015
A Note From the Principal...
November is a month to be thankful and we here at Walter Douglas are thankful for many things.
We are especially thankful for you, our school community. Many parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles
and friends attend meetings, trainings and school events in support of our students and our programs.
Thank you for your dedication to our school and to helping our students succeed. With this in mind, we
would love to see you at some upcoming school events: our PTO meeting is on November 4th at 2:30 in
room 29, our Success Assembly is November 6that 8:00, our district Choral Festival is November 9th at
FWHS, our first Band/Orchestra concert of the year is November 17th at 5:30 and the first Read and Eat
is November 19th at 5:30 p.m. There is no school November 11th for Veteran’s Day and November 26 &
27th for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Walter Douglas staff gives extra special thanks for the parents and families of our students. We know
that you are an essential piece in the education of your child. Thank you for expecting good behavior and
study skills as well as reinforcing key concepts taught here at school. We at Walter Douglas believe that
it takes family and school working together to help students achieve success. Thank you to the parents
who were able to attend fall parent/teacher conferences. Way to go Bulldog Parents!
I know that you join me in being thankful for all the hard work our teachers and staff put into helping our
students achieve their goals. Our Bulldog team puts in many long hours to ensure your child is safe,
happy to come to school, and getting a quality education. The staff at Walter Douglas Elementary are
committed to your child and their education.
Most of all, we are thankful for our students. We here at Walter Douglas are full of pride in our students
for their hard work in making sure to concentrate on their lessons and follow P.A.W.S. We have faith in
our students and know wonderful things are in store for them in the future.
Finally, we are thankful to be Walter Douglas Bulldogs and we know you are too. Happy November!
Sincerely,
Ms. McAllister
nuestros alumnos y nuestros programas. Gracias por su dedicación a nuestra escuela y ayudar a nuestros
estudiantes a tener éxito.
Sinceramente,
Ms. McAllister

P.A.W.S. Corner with Mr. Nogami
Happy November, Bulldog Families! I’m happy to say that many of our students are
following our school-wide expectation of P.A.W.S. by being promptly prepared, acting
respectfully, working hard, and staying safe. This is evident in the high number of
PAWSitive referrals! As mentioned before, each quarter our students and staff select an incentive that the students can earn by following P.A.W.S. This quarter the
staff decided the incentive would be a Dance Party! The students will need to
have six days without a discipline referral during the second quarter in order to earn
this incentive. When you talk to your child about school, we encourage you to
continue to ask, “How did you follow P.A.W.S. today?” or “Did the school earn a
day without negative referrals today?” Positive reinforcement is a large part of
our P.A.W.S. program and we encourage parents and guardians to communicate with their child about the positive reinforcement they receive at school.

Happy November! Thank you for coming to your child’s first
parent teacher conference. Please continue to work with your
child on the quarter two goals for kindergarten. We want your
child counting by 1’s to 50 each night, practicing writing
sentences, and please continue to read with your child for 15 minutes a day. We
appreciate you working with your child on their homework and checking their
backpack for important papers coming home. Thank you for your continued
Support!
First quarter went by so fast! We were thrilled to see everyone at conferences and to work
together to make a plan for your child’s success. Please be sure to practice math facts with your
child at home. Don’t forget to quiz them and write how many math facts they correctly answered in one minute on the homework tracker Thursday, so they receive credit. Our second
quarter math fact goal is addition facts to five and subtraction facts to five. Since first grade is
doing a lot of writing about the stories we read, it is a great idea to encourage your child to write
about what they read at home. We are getting into a busy time of year so be sure to check your
child’s folder nightly for important information. Near the end of the month, we will be sending home important
notes about items needed for holiday crafts, gifts, and celebrations. Our classrooms are currently in need of snacks,
baby wipes, and gallon sized bags. These donations are always appreciated! Thank you parents!
Happy November from 2nd grade! Fall has begun and we have a lot of fun
things happening! Thank you to everyone who helped at our 2nd grade
booths at the Fall Carnival! We appreciated your help and your donations.
Please remember that book bags and fluency passages are all due on
Fridays! Also, please remind your child to be on their best behavior and
be on time to school, as behavior and grades can factor into attending
upcoming field trips! 
Hello 3rd Grade Parents! A big Thank You for coming
to our Parent Teacher Conferences! We very much enjoyed meeting
you and discussing goals for next quarter. Please continue to focus on
reading comprehension and math problem solving by completing the
Reading Reflection Log and Math Problem Solving with your child
each week. Also, having your child on time and present each and every school day will help your
child be successful. Finally, we very much appreciate continued donations of dry erase markers,
hand sanitizer, tissues, and snacks! Thank you Parents for all that you do!
Hello 4th Grade parents! Thank you so much to all the parents and families who
helped donate time or supplies to our Fall Carnival! We have lots going on in
November! This month we will officially be starting our Parent Engagement Goals
we discussed in September with read and respond pages for nightly reading and a
monthly math problem to be solved with you and your child. Don’t forget to pay
the $1 ARS Activity Fee if you haven’t already! We have field trips coming up soon and that fee
will need to be paid FIRST-before students will be allowed to attend. Grand Canyon News: Don’t
forget to make your monthly payments for the trip! If you need more
information, please contact your child’s teacher. Thank you for all of your support!
We have a few exciting things going on this month. We have
started preparing for our Science Fair so any support you can
offer to help them along would be greatly appreciated. We
have a special event this month, the Tucson Symphony Orchestra is performing a Woodwind Quintet ensemble on the 20th, hopefully it will inspire all of our
band and orchestra students! Also, cross country is under way and we have a few races this
month-come out and support our Bulldogs! Lastly, please continue reading and practicing math
facts with your children, all your support helps tremendously. The fifth grade team thanks you
Sixth Grade News
Thank you to all of the parents who gave time to either come in and
meet face-to-face or have telephonic conferences with your child's
teachers. Because of your dedication, fall parent conferences were a
success. We will be taking a field trip on November 13 for which we
are in need of parent chaperones. Your child will need to pack a sack lunch for the trip or
plan to order a lunch from the cafeteria, as we will be gone for the day. Please remember
to engage with your child in reading on a nightly basis the chapter books we sent home, as
well as working with your child to solve the monthly math problems. New books and math
problems will be sent home for November. Look for the first progress reports of the second
quarter to be coming home during the first week of November, but you can always check
your child's grades at any time by logging in with the information passed out during parent
night and parent conferences.
Flowing Wells School District encourages parents in our community to visit the campuses at
Flowing Wells Junior High School and Flowing Wells High School to see the many special
things our schools have to offer your children. Please call Flowing Wells Junior High School
at 696-8552 or Flowing Wells High School at 696-8001 to schedule an appointment for a
guided tour.

Wow! November already? Sheesh. Unbelievable. It seems like October was
just last week. Oh it was, you say? Huh. Go figure. Well since you mentioned
it, lets recap last month. October was fairly busy, we finished our first catalog
sale. Our orders were lost in the mail, which delayed the deliveries by a
week. If you have any issues or questions about your order please call me at
520-668-6922, or you can call the vendor directly at 1-888-816-1116.
Additionally, we had our annual Fall Carnival! This year's carnival was a blast to put together.
I want to thank all of the volunteers who helped make it run so smoothly. Finally, we ran our
cookie dough sale. If you haven"t turned in that order form yet this is your final notice! The
cookie dough orders are going to arrive 11/23.
Which brings us to November! Now, September and October were very busy. Maybe even
too busy (not really.) November is much less busy, but keep an eye out for a flyer for a
restaurant fundraiser sometime during the month. More details on that later this month.
Finally, it's almost holiday season. For most people, the holidays are a time of joy.
However, for some of us, they are more stressful than joyous. If you are like me, and the
holidays are a trying time for you, I want you to know that it's important to talk to someone
about how you feel. Even if it's weird or awkward. You'll feel better. Okay? Okay. I look
forward to seeing everyone on campus and at our events!
