Traditions help us order the world and mark the
passing of time. As my children grew up, we marked
our entry into the Christmas season by decorating the
Christmas tree, reading
the Dylan Thomas
classic,
“A
Child’s
Christmas in Wales,”
and singing the choral
parts
of
Handel’s
Messiah.
Most people are
familiar with Handel’s
masterpiece, but not many know it was composed as
an Easter— not Christmas—oratorio. If we listen to the
whole thing, we hear the familiar prophecies of Isaiah
and Paul’s triumphant cry, “O Death, where is thy
sting?” The glorious “Hallelujah Chorus” announces the
triumphant reign of the risen
Christ.
Every year on Palm Sunday
and Good Friday, for much longer
than our traditions have held sway,
the Church has told the story of
the passion and death of Jesus.
This story marks our entrance into the faith of the
Church and orders our sacred time.
It’s the story of a death that leads to life—both the
resurrected life of Jesus, which we celebrate next
week, and the eternal life that’s ours if we follow him.
In Mark’s telling of the story, we encounter the
woman who anointed Jesus and the young man who
ran away when Jesus was arrested.
Each gospel writer gives us a slightly different
version of the story, and each writer adds to our
perspective and our understanding that this man and
this death weren’t like any other. This Jesus was God,
who emptied himself so we might live.
Surely that’s worth singing about.

St. Gregory the Great Adoration Society
“Would you not spend one hour with Me?”
Eucharistic Adoration is adoring the Eucharistic Presence of Christ
Our Perpetual Adoration Chapel gives us an opportunity to spend an hour of prayer and give thanks for the
many blessings we have received. This hour in peace and meditation with the Blessed Sacrament can also be an
opportunity to pray for our friends and family who are sick or just need our prayers. Christ instituted this Holy
Sacrament of the Eucharist in order to remain with mankind until the end of time (Jn. 14:18).
Our wish is to have someone present for each of the 24 hours throughout the day in silent contemplation and
reflection. We can use more adorers for this ministry. Please be generous with your time and sign up for one
hour of adoration.
If you have any questions or feel you can sign up for just one hour per week please call John Klinger 757-7454
or send an email to [email protected].

santuario.

WORSHIP
CELEBRATE THE EASTER TRIDUUM
The Easter Triduum, marking the days of Jesus’ passion and resurrection, is the most important time of the
church year. Triduum is the Latin word for three days. The season of Lent leads to and culminates with the
celebration of these three holiest of days: Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. The liturgies of these
days are not meant to be viewed as separate events rather, they form one movement. Through our participation
in these liturgies, we become one with Jesus in His passion, death and resurrection to new life.
The Triduum is a very sacred time. The church asks us to keep these days holy, to keep distractions to a
minimum and keep the spirit of these days as much as possible at home. The liturgy becomes the focal point.
Think of Triduum as a parish retreat. Mass is not celebrated Thursday, Friday or Saturday morning. Instead we
gather for simple prayer, so that our focus remains on the liturgies of the day.
Holy Thursday: We open the Triduum with the celebration of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 7:00
p.m. We commemorate the institution of the Eucharist and the priesthood, as well as Jesus’ command of love
and service. This command is so perfectly demonstrated in the washing of the feet. This gesture of humility and
service expresses the responsibilities of all who share the Eucharist.
Good Friday at 3:00 p.m.: The Passion and Death of the Lord. The liturgy is simple, reverent and
prayerful. There is a spirit in the church, even as we enter and leave.
Holy Saturday: There is no liturgy dedicated to Holy Saturday itself. Holy Saturday is a symbol of
God’s rest at the end of creation and of Christ’s rest in the tomb. It is when night falls that we come to the great
celebration of the Easter Vigil. Beginning outside at 8:30 p.m. the Easter Vigil is the climax of the Triduum. It
celebrates our faith in the resurrection, the cornerstone of Christian faith and ranks highest among the
celebrations of the liturgical year. The vigil begins when night falls and the fire rite shatters the darkness. The
longest liturgy of the year, it is hoped that the Vigil is the kind of experience for which we willingly inconvenience
ourselves. We are here tonight because there is nowhere else we would rather be.
May these days of Holy Week and the Triduum be a sacred time for all of us.
Ministry Help Needed
As you are reading this, you are one of approximately 2800 people who attend one of our Masses on any
given weekend. Did you know that about 125 parishioner volunteers serve as Altar Servers, Lectors, Ushers,
Greeters, Eucharistic Ministers and in the Nursery every weekend? This represents about 4% of our
parishioners serving the other 96% of Mass attendees. If volunteers were assigned one Sunday a month, we
would need over 500 parishioners to help each month.
Currently, we have approximately 350 volunteers to fill the 500 slots needed. Many of these parishioners
have been serving since Saint Gregory the Great first opened our doors. Since you attend Mass and each
ministry requires a minimum amount of time (in all instances arriving early to sign in and in one or two instances
staying a few minutes after Mass is dismissed), would you be willing to lend a hand? It is very simple to
register and can be done completely online.
Login to www.sgg.cc and click on the MINISTRIES box. You will find a description of the Liturgical Ministries
and the name of a contact person in case you have any questions you want answered before you signup. If you
wish to help, click on the Sign Up For A Ministry cross at the top of the page. Complete the form online and
when done, click the Submit for Processing box. Someone will be in touch with you within a month of
submission. If you are not comfortable using a computer, signup forms can be found in the literature rack in the
vestibule and can be placed in the collection basket.
Some ministries need more help than others. For example, ushers and greeters are needed at all Saturday
Vigil and Sunday Masses. Altar Servers are especially in need at the 4:00 & 6:00p.m. Saturday Masses. The
5:00 p.m. Sunday and the 6:00 p.m. Saturday need help in all areas. Please consider giving of your time to
volunteer at Saint Gregory the Great as we serve God together.

Sacred Relics Of The Saints: Treasures Of The Church
St. Gregory the Great Parish presents a teaching and exposition of Sacred Relics on Saturday
April 11 at 7:15 pm. Father Carlos Martins of the Companions of the Cross will be here with his
very special ministry to teach about these holy objects. He will bring with him over 150 relics,
some as old as 2000 years. Among the treasures will be relics of St. Maria Goretti, St. Therese of
Lisieux (the Little Flower"), St. Francis of Assisi, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Thomas Aquinas and
St. Faustina Kowalska. In addition, there will also be present a portion of the veil of Our Lady, as
well as one of the largest remaining pieces of the True Cross in the world. Those in attendance
will be able to examine and venerate each relic. In the Church’s history many miracles and
healings have been worked in the presence of relics and many have been healed through this
ministry. Please do not miss this opportunity. You are encouraged to bring your articles of
devotion (such as rosaries, holy cards, etc.) and pictures of ill friends/family members, which you
will be able to touch to the reliquaries as a means of intercession.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
Golf Tournament
June 06, 2015
Bear Creek Golf Club
237 Whooping Crane Way
Hilton Head Island, SC 29926
Benefiting John Paul II School
In the 1930s, Our Lord appeared to a
Polish nun, St. Maria Faustina Kowalska.
Jesus instructed her in praying the Divine
Mercy Chaplet, promising extraordinary
graces to those who would recite this special devotion.
The tournament will be held on Saturday, June 6th at a
great course (Bear Creek Golf Club), with morning
coffee and afternoon buffet, followed by some terrific
prizes and awards. The best of all, you will be
supporting our John Paul II School.
The Chaplet can be recited anytime but Jesus
specifically asked that it be recited as a novena from
Good Friday to the Saturday after Easter. Jesus
also revealed to her the establishment of the Feast of
Divine Mercy, held on the Sunday after Easter.
FEE: $125.00 EACH OR $450.00 PER FOURSOME
DONATIONS (IN ANY AMOUNT) WILL BE ACCEPTED
Jesus told St. Faustina "My daughter, tell the whole
world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the
Feast of Mercy be a refuge and a shelter for all souls
and especially for poor sinners...I pour out a whole
ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the
fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to confession
and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete
forgiveness. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even
though its sins be as scarlet.” (Easter confession will
satisfy that condition)

In the Beginning 8
The Miracle of Life. At conception, the gender of
the child is determined by the father's sperm. We
are going to name this tiny human being "Chris." Chris
has not implanted into the wall of the uterus yet, so no
one but God knows of Chris's existence. God has
known of Chris's existence since before He created the
universe. God has known us and loved us from all
eternity.
God said, "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew
you." Jeremiah 1:5
Spiritual Adoption Prayer
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg
you to spare the life of the unborn baby I have spiritually
adopted who is in danger of abortion. Amen.
The novena prayer and chaplet leaflets are available
in the narthex of the church.
To conclude the novena, you may attend "Divine
Mercy Sunday" prayer service April 12 at 3:00 p.m. at
St. Gregory the Great Church.

DR. SEUSS BIRTHDAY
Every March, students at
SGGCS are treated to a visit by
the Cat in the Hat and his
cohorts, Thing 1 and Thing 2 in
honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday.
The visitors usually create
havoc in the classrooms much
to the children’s delight and
teachers dismay.
Once the
visitors settled in, students
found the joy of reading with the
characters of Dr. Seuss.
Congratulations to all
of our John Paul II students who received awards at the
Sea Islands Regional Science Fair.
The awards
ceremony was held at our school on March 16, and it
included area public, private and parochial schools.
The following high school students received top regional
honors: Zoe Keller, 2nd place in Math and Engineering;
Alex Thaller, 3rd place in Math and Engineering plus U.S.
Metric Association Award and Intel Award for Best
Project in Computer Science; Abigail Barker, 3rd place in
Social/Behavioral Science.
Honorable Mentions were won by our middle school
students for projects in a number of scientific fields: Molly
Rembold, physics; Meaghan Lyons, social/ behavioral;
Abbey Calton, social/ behavioral; Eileen Lundblad,
botany/microbiology; Ashlyn Durel, chemistry; Tyler
Klein, math and engineering; Skyler Clark, zoology; Danika Dingus, zoology; Mary Grace Nimmer, zoology; Merritt
Woodham, zoology; Katherine Reilly, environmental; Phong Tram, chemistry. We are pleased with the impressive
accomplishment of our budding scientists.
John Paul II also applauds the seven St. Gregory the Great 4th grade winners of the Odyssey of the Mind
Competition. They go on to the World Finals at Michigan State University in May. We are proud of this team, which
included five siblings of our JP II students. We expect to see them doing great things in our JP II Class of 2023!

THEME: The Way We Pray
"This is how you are to pray."
Prayer is the life of the Church.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church deals
specifically with the Lord's prayer, as well as the
general life of prayer within the Church.
Within Catholicism, there are a host of prayer styles,
prayer traditions, popular devotions, as well as an
array of sacramentals which help to deepen one's life
of prayer and faith.
This session considers how spiritual reading,
retreats, and reflections can enrich our spiritual lives.
Please call the Parish Office to register 843-8153100 x 228.
