The card includes a prayer for vocations and a list of the men who are currently studying at seminaries for the Archdiocese of Boston. Pope Saint John XXIII in Weston was founded fifty years ago by Cardinal Cushing to prepare older men for priesthood. The student body is made up of men over the age of 50. Some of them are widowers who are also fathers and grandfathers. St. John Seminary in Brighton and the North American College in Rome prepare men who have completed university degrees. The Redemptoris Mater Seminary in Brookline trains men whose vocations were the fruit of their experience with the Church Movement “The Neo-Catechumenal Way”. Those men take most of their academic courses at St. John’s Seminary. Finally, the Archdiocese sends men who are college age to live in a formation house and study at Providence College. This year sixty-four men are studying for Boston. Their names are listed below. I ask you to pray for them and for those men who God made to be his priests but have not yet entered the Seminary nor been ordained. I know some of those men come from our parish. – Fr. Intercede for us to the Lord of the Harvest to send more laborers to the harvest. Inspire vocations in our time. Let the word of your Son be made flesh anew in the lives of persons anxious to proclaim the Good News of everlasting life. Draw them near to the heart of your Son so that they can understand the beauty and joy that awaits them when the Lord Jesus calls them to be His witness. Amen. VINCENT de PAUL Today we celebrate The Cathedral of the Diocese of Rome. It is considered the Pope's church in his capacity as bishop of Rome. It is the symbol for bishops everywhere. Please your gift in the St. Vincent de Paul poor box so that those who are suffering will be able to celebrate Thanksgiving. Jesus, give us the grace to seek you in our lives, so that all of our decisions, plans, struggles and actions revolve around you. Amen. THANK YOU FOR COATS Many thanks to those of you who donated winter coats to St. Vincent de Paul during October. Over 50 coats were donated! They will be given to men, women, and children who need a warm coat to get through the cold months of winter. Seán Patrick O’Malley, OFM Cap Cardinal Archbishop of Boston Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica 3 Santa María de Waltham 9 de noviembre de 2014 DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA This Sunday is an unusual feast. Catholic Churches throughout the world honor the Cathedral of Pope Francis– the Lateran Basilica. Since the Pope is the Shepherd of all Catholics, we are reminded that we are to live in unity under his guidance. May the readings and prayers of this day lead us not to worry about the building in Rome...but to build our life and community on the foundation of Christ’s love. CEMETERY VISITS - RESCHEDULED Due to inclement weather on All Souls’ Day, we had to postpone the cemetery visits. They have been rescheduled as follows: CALVARY CEMETERY - Friday, Nov. 14 at 1:15 p.m.. We will meet at the Crucifix at Calvary. MOUNT FEAKE - Friday, Nov. 14 at 1:15 p.m. We will meet at the flagpole at Mt. Feake. Please consider joining us. We pray for all the dead buried in that cemetery. Then we make our way as much as possible to the specific graves connected with those people who are present that day. We sprinkle the specific graves with holy water, say a brief prayer for the dead buried in that grave, and then move on to the next location. Many parishioners are helped by these visits. It can be hard for some to visit the cemetery on their own. THE BOOK OF THE DEAD We invite everyone to record the names of the deceased in the Book of the Dead placed near the baptismal font. We will pray for those listed in the Book throughout the month of November. VETERANS DAY Waltham will gather at the Circle of Remembrance on the Waltham Common this Tuesday to honor and remember all veterans. We encourage you to attend this ceremony which begins at 10:30 with a tribute to Wally Hoyt for “Wally’s Way”, followed by the civic ceremony at 11:00 a.m. Let us also pray for an end of all wars. Let us remember that War World I stopped fighting on at the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Let us also remember that this is the feast day of St. Martin of Tours, a former soldier who laid down his weapons to become a peacemaker and a soldier for Christ. THANK YOU About two hundred adults and children attended the Saints Party last Friday night. Many saints attended, including St. Bahkita, St. Rose of Lima, St. Michael and St. Gabriel, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Louis and even Pope Francis. They played games, ate candy and pizza, socialized and took part in a costume contest. Many thanks to the organizers of this event. It was a great time. 4 SAINT VINCENT de PAUL APPEAL The annual St. Vincent de Paul appeal is underway. If you did not receive a copy of the Annual Report in the mail, please pick up a copy at the church entrances so you can respond as your means allow with donations to this charitable ministry here at St. Mary’s. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS The Knights of Columbus are Catholic men 18 years old or older who devote themselves to the project of making better their families and communities, while they support the Church and receive the support of the Church. To be a Knight of Columbus is to belong to a fraternity that enriches itself through the sharing of the faith in order to protect and improve the family life. You will receive a special invitation to know this international organization at Saint Mary’s in Waltham. If you have not received this invitation, contact the priests and deacon of the Parish, who will give you more information. Please attend the meeting on Sunday, November 23 at 1:30 p.m. in Saint Mary’s lower hall to learn about the advantages of being a member. VOTING SEASON WATERTOWN SAVINGS BANK The voting for the Watertown Saving Bank Customer Choice Awards has begun. We ask anyone who has a bank account with WSB to vote for the Saint Mary’s After School program. Last year we received $1,823 to support our program. You can vote online or by dropping a paper ballot in the box at a local branch the next time you stop in the bank. Thanks for your consideration. CONGRATULATIONS CHOIR The Uganda Martyrs Choir is marking its 12th Anniversary Celebration this Sunday. Many times over the past seven years they have graced us with their voices and sound. We are a better parish because of your presence and commitment to lead us to worship and praise our God. We look forward to hearing you sing in the future. MANY THANKS Last month, the Adult Choir not only sang at Mass on one of the Sundays, but also cooked delicious food and served it for parishioners after the Mass. $600 was raised in donations from the lunch. It will be put towards the heating costs of the Church. Many thanks to the Choir for their initiative. Fiesta de la Dedicación de la Basílica de Letran en Roma St. Mary Parish, Waltham November 9, 2014 SCRIPTURE OF THE WEEK We encourage everyone to continue reading the Acts of the Apostles this week … ACTS OF THE APOSTLES – CHAPTER 17 PART 2 Paul in Beroea. The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas to Beroea during the night. Upon arrival they went to the synagogue of the Jews. These Jews were more fairminded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with all willingness and examined the scriptures daily to determine whether these things were so. Many of them became believers, as did not a few of the influential Greek women and men. But when the Jews of Thessalonica learned that the word of God had now been proclaimed by Paul in Beroea also, they came there too to cause a commotion and stir up the crowds. So the brothers at once sent Paul on his way to the seacoast, while Silas and Timothy remained behind. After Paul’s escorts had taken him to Athens, they came away with instructions for Silas and Timothy to join him as soon as possible. CRITICAL FOOD SHORTAGE Our St. Vincent de Paul food pantry is in desperate need of donations of non-perishable food items, particularly canned goods. Your donations enable us to provide those in need with a bag of these items to supplement the food vouchers we also provide. Please leave your donations at the back of the church. SERRA CLUB OF BOSTON Serra Club is a group of Catholic laypersons dedicated to encouraging, promoting, and affirming vocations to the ministerial priesthood and vowed religious life. PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY The next meeting of the Prayer Shawl Ministry is Saturday, November 15 at 2:30 at St. Mary Apartments. The members knit or crochet shawls that are given to persons who are ill or experiencing crisis. The group also prays for the recipients of these shawls. All are welcome. For more information, please contact Mary Alice McMahon at 781-899-9726. LATIN MASS CANCELLED ON NOVEMBER 15 The 6:00 p.m. Latin Mass at St. Charles Borromeo will be cancelled on Saturday, November 15 due to a mandatory meeting of all priests of the Vicariate. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS ABOUT THE CREED Last year we began including questions and answers about each line of the Creed to remind us what we mean when we profess our faith. We have reached the end of the prayer. From the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church… • What is the meaning of the word “Amen” with which we conclude our profession of faith? The Hebrew word “A men”, which also concludes the last book of Sacred Scripture, some of the prayers of the New Testament, and the liturgical prayers of the Church, expresses our confident and total “yes” to what we professed in the Creed, entrusting ourselves completely to him who is the definitive “A men” (Revelation 3:14), Christ the Lord. THE WEDDING AT CANA We are planning a wedding and anniversary celebration at St. Mary’s on February 14, 2015. We are calling it THE WEDDING AT CANA– 2015. This celebr ation is being organized especially for couples who have been together but have never had their marriage blessed in the Church. Jesus was invited to a wedding at Cana. And he accepted the invitation. And because he was there the wedding (and hopefully the rest of that couple’s married days) was made better. Remember what happened at the wedding. The wine ran out. That’s what can happen in any of our lives, whether we are married, ordained and consecrated or single. But with Jesus, more wine not only arrived...but the wine was better. Are you in a relationship with someone but have never come to the Church to have your marriage blessed? Do you know some people who are together but have not yet been married. Were you married by a Justice of the Peace but not in Church? Sometimes people need help with the annulment process. Sometimes people have ideas on who and who cannot get married in the Church that are not correct. Often times people think a wedding has to be huge and expensive. This can be a turn off for some. THE WEDDING AT CANA-2015 is taking place to help men and women through the process and take away as many obstacles to having a wedding in Church. There will be an informational meeting for any interested couples on Sunday, November 16 at 1:00 p.m. (Spanish) and Wednesday, November 19 at 7:00 p.m. (English). Please spread the word and contact any of the priests or Deacon if you have any questions. WEDDING AT CANA – ANNIVERSARIES On this same evening, we are inviting any couple to renew their wedding vows and acknowledge their wedding anniversaries. The ceremony will be at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday February 14, 2015. It does not matter whether you have been married for 50 or 29 or 7 or 1 year. Couples who are interested need to register so we can make the necessary arrangements and include your names in the program.
