Year of Mercy:
A Time to Affirm God’s Work in our Lives
(Lessons from the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time)
Año de la Misericordia:
"
Dear brothers and sisters, today’s Gospel from Luke 4:
21-30 is the continuation of last Sunday’s Gospel narrative where
Jesus identified with his people when he went to the temple as a
pious Jew on a Sabbath. In the biblical tradition, going to the
temple means going to encounter God and His people. The temple
was also seen as a place of refuge where people share hope-filled
message and life-giving instructions. When Jesus
entered the Synagogue of Nazareth, he gave a
message of hope and healing. In a way, Jesus
joyfully inaugurated the first Jubilee Year of
Mercy when he reverently and insightfully read
from the Prophet Isaiah 61: 2 “The spirit of the
Lord is upon me; therefore he has anointed me.
He has sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor,
to proclaim liberty to captives, recovery of sight
to the blind and release to prisoners, to announce
a year of favor from the Lord.”
In our Gospel reading for this Sunday (Luke 4: 21-30),
the Scripture indicated that those who heard these words spoke
favorably of him (affirmation), they marveled at the appealing
discourse which came out of his lips (acceptance). But there were
some who decided to see him as a no-body as we locate their
indifference in these words: “Is not this Joseph’s son?” (Luke 4:
22) as if to say, “what can a carpenter from Nazareth aspire to?”
Their attitude confirms the proverb: “no prophet is acceptable in
his own country and among his own people.”
Unlike the detractors in our Gospel reading, this Jubilee
Year of Mercy, offers us an opportunity to affirm the work of God
in our lives, to appreciate the many good things that the Blessed
Lord is doing for His people from generation to generation. In the
words of the Psalmist “O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his steadfast love and mercy endures forever” (Ps 118:1). We are
also called to affirm the prophets who bring the good news to usHow beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring
good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings (Isaiah
52:7).
Thus, mercy means affirmation, recognition of what we
receive from God and our ability to share God’s love with others
“Be merciful as your heavenly Father is merciful” (Luke 6: 36).
Mercy is a the key to family life: constantly accepting, helping,
forgiving one another out of a deeper sense of relationship shaped
by our faith and love for God.
In this extra ordinary jubilee year of mercy, let us learn
to affirm one another. Let us allow these evangelical expressions:
“Thank You,” “It is well with You,” “You are awesome,” “I am
grateful,” “I am sorry,” “Kindly forgive me,” etc to accompany us
in our relationships with others beginning with members of our
families, our colleagues at work, our companions in ministry, and
those we providentially meet in our day to day journey and life
experiences. Remember the words of St. Paul in our 2nd reading as
you engage in this renewed spirituality of affirmation, “Love is
patient; love is kind. Love is not jealous, it does not put on airs,
and it is not snobbish. Love is never rude, it is not self-seeking, it
is not prone to anger; neither does it brood over injuries. Love
does not rejoice in what is wrong but rejoices with the truth. Love
bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures
all things. Love never ends” (1 Corinthians 13: 4-8).
Have a Graceful Week!!!
Fr. Ben
ungido.
No quiere
soporta. El amor nunca pasará" (1 Corintios 13: 4-8).
¡¡¡Que tengan una semana llena de gracia!!!

Healing Broken Hearts-One Weekend at a Time.
Pope Francis has designated this year as the Holy Year of Mercy and to, “Be merciful as your
Father is merciful,” as Jesus told his disciples in Luke 6:36. This year 2016 is an opportunity
for spiritual conversion, recognizing how much God loves and cares for us. It is also a time to
be merciful towards ourselves, reorienting our hearts to God so that we can be our best selves
as we move forward in life.
If you have emotional or spiritual wounds as a result of a past abortion, please consider attending our upcoming Rachel’s Vineyard weekend retreat February 5-7, 2016. These retreats are therapy of the soul, with
Christ as our loving physician. It is an opportunity for women and men to experience the graces of this merciful, holy year
and renew and rebuild hearts broken by abortion and life’s circumstances. Participation is strictly confidential. For more information, please contact Mary Huber at 909-475-5353 or [email protected] or www.Rachelsvineyard.org

This is what Life Teen and Edge Youth ministries have been providing for over 20 years for
our Sacred Heart teen Community. Thank You for helping young people live as disciples of
Jesus Christ, for inviting our youth to participate in the life and work of the Catholic faith
community, and encouraging personal and spiritual growth of each young person. We would
like to thank all of the core members of both Edge and Life Teen, who continue to put time and
effort into ministering the teens of Sacred Heart!
