School Office: (805) 648-6836 Weekly Reflection Reflexión Semanal The goodness of the Lord La bondad del Señor Today’s readings and prayers remind us that we are drawn to God by the goodness we witness in the world. The Responsorial Psalm says this goodness is achieved when we follow the precepts of the Lord which “give joy to our hearts, refresh our souls, give wisdom to the simple, endure forever and are ever true and just.” When we live in the manner described above, God’s goodness is manifest. This understanding causes us to open our hearts to all who have been blessed by God’s spirit. In the Old Testament reading, Moses realized this when he reminded Joshua that God’s goodness is not limited or limiting. It can be made apparent in many different ways and situations. Jesus speaks to this issue also when he proclaims that, “No one who performs a mighty deed in my name can at the same time speak ill of me. For whoever is not against us is for us.” We are encouraged to be open to the goodness we see in unfamiliar places and refrain from being judgmental. Jesus reminds us to focus on our own behaviors, taking care to be fair and just, and avoid leading others into sin. In the epistle, Saint James gives the example of those who are in positions of power who have taken advantage of others, amassing an earthly treasure. James cautions that their gold and silver will corrode and “that corrosion will be a testimony against [them]; it will devour [their] flesh like a fire.” The cautionary words in both the epistle and gospel give us pause as we seek to live God’s precepts, praying that he pardon and show mercy as we seek to be “heirs to the treasures of heaven” (Collect). (Colecta) Our Lady of the Assumption Mission Statement We, as faithful followers of Jesus Christ, create, nurture, and maintain a community of love through worship, reconciliation, healing, formation, education and service. I once believed that because I went to school and took science classes, I already knew everything about how the world and the universe works. Who needs religion right? Well a few years ago I married my wonderful wife who's Catholic. So I thought I would get in her good side and go to church with her every week. So there I was sitting at the back of the church and thinking wow what a nice group of people. My wife then exclaimed "wow did you hear the choir? I have to go sing with them!" So, thinking I would really get some major points, I joined the choir with her! Our amazing choir was so loving and welcoming even though I wasn't Catholic! I left Mass every week with such a wonderful feeling! Then my wife and I joined the Living Matrimony small group and it was the same heart warming experience! I then realized maybe science class DIDN'T teach me everything I needed to know. So last summer when it was announced that RCIA was starting, I wanted to go - but did I have to go "back to school"? I was worried that I would be the weird guy in class who didn't know anything. I didn't even know what the word "Catholic" meant. But it wasn't like that at all, there were people from all different faiths, even people who were Catholic their entire lives but just wanted to learn more. And we all shared a common bond, to grow in our understanding of our faith and to connect with God. It wasn't like going to school at all, because we all went on a journey together learning about our faith, supporting each other as a family. RCIA changed my life and the way I see our community as a church family. So if there is anyone out there who is thinking about RCIA but not sure, I encourage you to go so you can experience it for yourself! Ronald Fong, RCIA 2014-15 We meet Tuesdays at 7pm in the Santa Cruz Room. For more information contact Deacon Don & Diana Huntley via email at [email protected] or by phone at (805) 642-7966 x123. Back to school: keep communicating School starting may make it harder to have family time, but it is important to keep the lines of communication open during the rush of sports, activities and schoolwork. Ask your kids about their day – who they talked to and what they did. Your kids should know there’s nothing too embarrassing or scary to share with you. One easy way to start a conversation with your child is by talking to them in the car – they can be brief, private and sometimes avoiding eye contact can help kids open up.
