Adorers will be needed from Wednesday, August 12 at 3:00pm—Friday, August 14 at 5:00pm in the church. Adoration chapel will be closed. To sign up please visit: http://www.signupgenius.com/ go/20f054daeac29a4f58-fifty. For more information please see our website. We welcome to our St. Clement of Rome family our newly baptized member: Mariana Lucia Mendieta, daughter of Jhonatan and Ana Mendieta. Many people have been on our prayer list for a long time and may have already had their prayers answered or are no longer in need of remaining on the list. If you want your name or a family member’s name that you placed on the prayer list to remain, please contact the Parish Center. Starting with the July 5th bulletin, all names will be removed except for those we have heard from. In the future, names will remain on the prayer list for a period of 6 months unless you request otherwise. This will allow us to have room to add new intentions. FIRST FRIDAY SACRED HEART DEVOTIONS On July 3, SCR will have a Holy Hour in church immediately following the 8:15 am Mass (from 8:45 until 9:45 am). This holy hour will conclude with Benediction by 9:45 am. The Adoration Chapel will be closed during this hour. SAVE THE DATE SILENT IGNATIAN WOMEN’S RETREAT The 2015 St. Clement of Rome Rosary Rally will be held on Tuesday, October 27 at 7:00pm in the church. Rosaryville Spirit Life Center in Ponchatoula, LA will be having a retreat on August 6 starting at 4:00pm and ending on August 9 at 1:00pm for women for a weekend of reflection, rediscovery and refreshment. The Spiritual Exercises are a complitation of meditations, prayers, and contemplative practices developed by St. Ignatius Loyola to help people deepen their relationship with God. Patti Clement of St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Baton Rouge will conduct the retreat. For more information or to register, please contact Stephanie Davis at [email protected] or call 225-294-5039. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The premier poet of the English language, Geoffrey Chaucer, introduced one of his most beloved characters, the “Wife of Bath,” by this telling remark: “Husbands at church door she had five.” Four times widowed, she was setting off on a pilgrimage, notably without number five. The church door is a curious detail, pointing to the fourteenth-century wedding custom of marrying on the porch of the parish church. The goal was to give maximum publicity to the consent of the groom and bride, and so consent was moved from the bride’s home to a public venue. The priest would stand in the doorway and begin by sprinkling the couple with holy water. He needed to make sure they weren’t too closely related and give them some instruction. He would direct the groom to pay the bride’s family a dowry, and then announce the monetary amounts to the interested passersby. Only then would the guests enter the church for the wedding Mass, during which the bride and groom would hold lighted candles. The gradual move from home to church and the shift from the bride’s father to the priest’s authority helped to protect the freedom of brides who weren’t quite as confident as the Wife of Bath. —Rev. Pedro le responde: Lord, you know that I love you, mientras que en español le dice: “Señor, tú sabes que te quiero”. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
