Remember - to obtain the Plenary Indulgence of this Feast - you only need to go to Confession during Lent, and attend Mass and Communion on Divine Mercy Sunday. It is great if you can do the Divine Mercy Novena starting on Good Friday but that is not a requirement. Let's spread the word and have a full church on Sunday, April 27 - Divine Mercy Sunday. Go to page 14 in the bulletin. .Divine Mercy Novena Divine Mercy Feast Day April 12, 2015 To be prayed April 3rd thru April 11 I fly to Your Mercy, compassionate God, who alone are good. My misery is great and my offenses are many. I trust in Your Mercy because You are the God of Mercy and it has never been heard of in all ages nor do heaven or earth remember that a soul trusting in Your Mercy has been disappointed. (State your intentions). Jesus, Friend of a lonely heart, you are my haven. You are my peace. You are my salvation. You are my serenity in moments of struggle and amidst an ocean of doubts. Jesus, I trust in your Divine Mercy. Amen. Enfold him in your love and restore him to sobriety. Lord, look with compassion on all those who have lost their health and freedom to alcohol and drugs. Restore to them the assurance of Your unfailing mercy, and strengthen them in the work of recovery. To those who care for them, grant patient understanding and a love that preserves. Amen SUBSTANCE ADDICTION MINISTRY – SAM Mission Statement: Substance Addiction Ministry (or “SAM”) will provide education about addictive disease; increase awareness of the pain in people’s lives and places where help can be found; and offer support, acceptance, understanding and healing. SAM is a newly developing ministry in our parish following an Archdiocesan training day we attended. We understand that addiction is a disease, and the toll that it takes on a person's relationship with loved ones. We respect the confidentiality of the individual afflicted with the addiction as well as those who love the individual. We are not counselors; we want to be bridges for others to find support and assistance in this difficult struggle. As one of our first events, we will be celebrating a Recovery Mass on April 16 at 7 pm at Holy Spirit in support of those whose lives are affected by addiction of any type. All are welcome. For more information, contact Barb Clisham at [email protected] or 353-2230. Faith in Our Past Faith in Our Future As an altar server at the first Mass held in the new Holy Spirit Parish (appropriately enough on Pentecost), Tom Catton likely did not anticipate that he would spend the rest of his life in the parish. Tom was a student at Our Lady of Lourdes and the Mass was held in what is now the living room of the rectory with about 25 in attendance. Over sixty years later, Tom has been present for innumerable Masses, baptisms, First Communions, basketball games, festivals, raffles and meetings, leaving a legacy of service to the parish. Father Francis J. Early presided at that first Mass as the founding pastor of Holy Spirit, having come from St. Philip Neri. The Early family had a significant impact on the City of Indianapolis at the time and not just from the pulpit. Father Early’s brother Robert joined the staff of the Indianapolis Star as a reporter in 1927 and became the managing editor in 1960. He is remembered by Star staffers today for decreeing that photographs of rats or snakes were banned from publication, as well as the word “stink.” Father Early’s brother Maurice also wrote for the Star beginning in 1916. The bulk of his career, which extended to 1954, was spent covering the Indiana Statehouse. Maurice Early became the leading authority of his time on Indiana government and earned the nickname “Mr. Indiana” of political writers. While his brothers were reporting the news in Indianapolis, Father Early was busy getting the new parish on the city’s Eastside up and running. The pastor was expected to be directly involved in fundraising efforts and Father Early’s entrepreneurial skills certainly came in handy. Tom recalls one of Father Early’s first efforts was a weekly pool called the HOS-St. Ann, run in conjunction with St. Ann Parish. Tom’s mother was a member of the Holy Spirit Women’s Club and took on a role for the pool that can only be described as a “runner.” She was responsible for selling a certain number of tickets for each pool, as well as overseeing sales by others. Father Early visited the Catton family home on Cecil Avenue from time to time to collect the ticket sale proceeds. After a visit with the family, Father Early went on his way to his next collection stop. The first Holy Spirit Festival was held in the lot at Hartman Drive and 10th Street next to the rectory. At the time, St. Christopher Parish claimed to have the best summer festival in the city and Father Early had it in mind to top them. In addition to having been at the parish’s first Mass, Tom was there for the first festival. Tom and his brother were working the basketball shooting game. At that first festival, there were no stuffed dolls for prizes. If the shooter made a couple of shots, he got his money back. If he made three in a row, he got his money and a little more back, as well as bragging rights. One night, Tom and his brother found themselves being cleaned out by a ringer. He hit shot after shot and happily took his winnings. Father Early heard the ruckus and went to investigate. Immediately recognizing the ringer, Father Early said, “Barney, get out of here!” The ringer was Leo Barnhorst, an Indianapolis native and Notre Dame basketball player. Barnhorst later played for the Indianapolis Olympians, one of the original teams in the NBA, and was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. All these years later, Father Early would be proud to know that with the help of Tom Catton and many others, the Holy Spirit Festival is known far and wide (and with all due respect, even more so than St. Christopher’s). We have a great history. Let’s make sure we have a great future! For information on how to remember Holy Spirit in your estate planning, please contact the parish office at 353.9404.
