SAINT ATHANASIUS
GOODBYE TO BERNIE, OUR CUSTODIAN
On this Easter week as we continue to celebrate the resurrection
of Jesus, I cannot help but look back at death again and the
tears of the family and friends of staff members who have died.
While Pastor of St. Joseph I witnessed the death of two Staff
members, Sr. Elizabeth Daly, O.P. our Director of Religious
Education and Mr. Jay Somera, our long-time Choir Director
who suddenly passed away on his way to conduct the choir
during the first day of our Simbang Gabi Mass. Two years ago
we lost Victor Valdez, our DRE at St. Athanasius to cancer.
Just about a month ago I officiated at the funeral Mass of Rajna
Ledoux, the choir director of St. Joseph Parish (who served for
11 years), whom we hired when I was Pastor there. She died
young at 49 leaving two young children, Sofia & Conrad, to
Brian, her husband.
I barely recovered from grief when suddenly we received another sad news that our parish Custodian BERNARDO
"BERNIE" DACASIN suddenly passed away barely two
hours before we were to start our Easter Vigil Service last Saturday, April 4th. To his family he was known as "Dodit" or
"Uncle D". As the person in charge of maintaining our facilities for almost 6 years now, Bernie made sure our Church
building, School building, parish hall, rectory and other facilities were working and clean. He had just built, and almost finished, the long-time dream of a bigger tool shed installing it's
recycled doors just last Friday. On that same day he put back
all his tools and equipment from my car's garage space to the
new tool shed and texted me that my car could now use it again
after almost 3 months outside. I wished him a happy one
month vacation and a safe flight scheduled for Easter Sunday.
He was going to attend his son's graduation from Nursing
school. Instead, our brother Bernie took an eternal vacation
with the Lord and went on his final journey and flight to our
Father's house. AND HE WILL NOT BE RETURNING.
When we received the call that he just died, Fr. Michael went to
his house in Milpitas to bless his body and pray with the family
while I, Deacon Leonel, Mike Cavera and Rosa Mancilla proceeded to lead in the celebration of the Easter Vigil. Along
with his family, we on the staff were all in shock because we
didn't remember him complaining of any major health problem.
These sad events made me think how precious indeed is the gift
of life from God and how precious are the moments we still
have left to enjoy. It made me think of the many unfinished
tasks we still have in our life. What things and which of these
unfinished works really matter most? Hopefully we will better
appreciate the people God has placed in our lives. The celebration of the resurrection of the Lord can give us courage but we
also remember him saying that we are to be prepared because
we don't know the day nor the hour of his last call and of our
last journey. AND TO BERNIE - THANK YOU FOR YOUR
HUMBLE SERVICE AT ST. ATHANASIUS. MAY YOU
NOW REST IN GOD'S PEACE. PA-ALAM NA SA IYO AMING KAPATID NA PUMANAW. St. Peter will surely need your
skills as Custodian of God's super resort called Heaven. St.
Athanasius, St. Bernard, pray for him!

BOLETIN HISPANO
ADIÓS A BERNIE, NUESTRO CUSTODIO
áreas e instalaciones estuvieran funcionales y limpias.
cambio, nuestro hermano Bernie tomó unas vacaciones eternas
Padre. Y ÉL NO REGRESARA.
llamado Cielo. San Atanasio, San Bernardo, ruega por él!

Catechetical Ministry (Religious Education)
Our catechetical program empowers the parish children
and youth in Jesus Christ as members of the Catholic
Christian community. We deepen our faith through Scripture stories, reflection, prayer and seasonal celebrations.
Materials may be provided to help parents participate in
their child’s faith formation. It is not enough to know
about Jesus. The Christian story is expressed throughout
our lives in faithful living. Classes are offered on Sunday
morning during the school year. For more information,
please contact (650) 961-8600 Ext. 111
Sacrament Preparation for Children & Youth
Preparation for the sacraments of First Reconciliation/First
Eucharist (Grades 1-12) and for Confirmation (Grades 9-12)

these sacraments. For more information: call Mike Cavera

Family Prayer Night
We need only to look around to see the tremendous pressures facing our families and how those pressures pull our
families apart. There’s little doubt that we live in a society of instant everything, one of the major contributions
to family deterioration. Family Prayer Night is a response. It is a way for families to set aside an hour a week
to be together in the presence of God, to pray and appreciate the most important people in our lives. Join us every
Tuesday in the Church, 7-8pm for Adoration, Benediction
and Prayer.
Baptism of Children
Parents are invited to contact one of the parish priests to set up an
initial interview. Parents and Godparents are required to attend a
Baptismal preparation session prior to the Baptism. Baptisms of
children (in English) are normally celebrated on the second Saturday of each month. No date can be set until the interview with the
priest. Children age 7 or above are required to participate in our
Generations of Faith program to prepare for this sacrament. To
arrange a Baptism in Spanish, see Rosa Mancilla after Mass. For
Baptism in English call rectory at (650) 961-8600.
Quinceañeras
