THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT
OPEN WIDE YOUR HEART TO
GOD’S MERCY!
In a few moments I will have the joy of opening the Holy Door of
Mercy. We carry out this act – as I did in Bangui – so simple yet so
highly symbolic, in the light of the word of God which we have just
heard. That word highlights the primacy of grace. Again and again
these readings make us think of the words by which the angel Gabriel
told an astonished young girl of the mystery which was about to enfold her: “Hail, full of grace” (Lk 1:28).
The Virgin Mary was called to rejoice above all because of what the Lord accomplished in her. God’s grace enfolded her and
made her worthy of becoming the Mother of Christ. When Gabriel entered her home, even the most profound and impenetrable
of mysteries became for her a cause for joy, a cause for faith, a cause for abandonment to the message revealed to her. The
fullness of grace can transform the human heart and enable it to do something so great as to change the course of human history.
The feast of the Immaculate Conception expresses the grandeur of God’s love. Not only does he forgive sin, but in Mary he
even averts the original sin present in every man and woman who comes into this world. This is the love of God which precedes,
anticipates and saves. The beginning of the history of sin in the Garden of Eden yields to a plan of saving love. The words of
Genesis reflect our own daily experience: we are constantly tempted to disobedience, a disobedience expressed in wanting to go
about our lives without regard for God’s will. This is the enmity which keeps striking at people’s lives, setting them in opposition
to God’s plan. Yet the history of sin can only be understood in the light of God’s love and forgiveness. Sin can only be
understood in this light. Were sin the only thing that mattered, we would be the most desperate of creatures. But the promised
triumph of Christ’s love enfolds everything in the Father’s mercy. The word of God which we have just heard leaves no
doubt about this. The Immaculate Virgin stands before us as a privileged witness of this promise and its fulfillment.
This Extraordinary Year is itself a gift of grace. To pass through the Holy Door means to rediscover the infinite mercy of
the Father who welcomes everyone and goes out personally to encounter each of them. It is he who seeks us! It is he who
comes to encounter us! This will be a year in which we grow ever more convinced of God’s mercy. How much wrong we do
to God and his grace when we speak of sins being punished by his judgment before we speak of their being forgiven by his mercy
(cf. Saint Augustine, De Praedestinatione Sanctorum, 12, 24)! But that is the truth. We have to put mercy before judgment, and
in any event God’s judgement will always be in the light of his mercy. In passing through the Holy Door, then, may we feel
that we ourselves are part of this mystery of love, of tenderness. Let us set aside all fear and dread, for these do not befit men and
women who are loved. Instead, let us experience the joy of encountering that grace which transforms all things.
Today, here in Rome and in all the dioceses of the world, as we pass through the Holy Door, we also want to remember another
door, which fifty years ago the Fathers of the Second Vatican Council opened to the world. This anniversary cannot be
remembered only for the legacy of the Council’s documents, which testify to a great advance in faith. Before all else, the Council
was an encounter. A genuine encounter between the Church and the men and women of our time. An encounter marked by
the power of the Spirit, who impelled the Church to emerge from the shoals which for years had kept her self-enclosed so
as to set out once again, with enthusiasm, on her missionary journey. It was the resumption of a journey of encountering
people where they live: in their cities and homes, in their workplaces. Wherever there are people, the Church is called to reach out
to them and to bring the joy of the Gospel, and the mercy and forgiveness of God. After these decades, we again take up this
missionary drive with the same power and enthusiasm. The Jubilee challenges us to this openness, and demands that we not
neglect the spirit which emerged from Vatican II, the spirit of the Samaritan, as Blessed Paul VI expressed it at the conclusion of
the Council. May our passing through the Holy Door today commit us to making our own the mercy of the Good Samaritan.

ABRE TODO TU CORAZÓN A
LA MISERICORDIA DE DIOS!
En breve tendré la alegría de abrir la Puerta Santa de la Misericordia. Como hice en
Bangui, cumplimos este gesto, a la vez sencillo y fuertemente simbólico, a la luz de
la Palabra de Dios que hemos escuchado, y que pone en primer plano el primado de
la gracia. En efecto, en estas lecturas se repite con frecuencia una expresión que
evoca la que el ángel Gabriel dirigió a una joven muchacha, asombrada y turbada,
indicando el misterio que la envolvería: «Alégrate, llena de gracia» (Lc 1,28).
La Virgen María está llamada en primer lugar a regocijarse por todo lo que el Señor
hizo en ella. La gracia de Dios la envolvió, haciéndola digna de convertirse en la
madre de Cristo. Cuando Gabriel entra en su casa, también el misterio más profundo, que va más más allá de la capacidad de la
razón, se convierte para ella en un motivo de alegría, motivo de fe, motivo de abandono a la palabra que se revela. La plenitud de
la gracia transforma el corazón, y lo hace capaz de realizar ese acto tan grande que cambiará la historia de la humanidad.
La fiesta de la Inmaculada Concepción expresa la grandeza del amor Dios. Él no sólo perdona el pecado, sino que en María
llega a prevenir la culpa original que todo hombre lleva en sí cuando viene a este mundo. Es el amor de Dios el que previene,
anticipa y salva. El comienzo de la historia del pecado en el Jardín del Edén desemboca en el proyecto de un amor que salva. Las
palabras del Génesis nos remiten a la experiencia cotidiana de nuestra existencia personal. Siempre existe la tentación de la
desobediencia, que se manifiesta en el deseo de organizar nuestra vida al margen de la voluntad de Dios. Esta es la enemistad que
insidia continuamente la vida de los hombres para oponerlos al diseño de Dios. Y, sin embargo, también la historia del pecado se
comprende sólo a la luz del amor que perdona. El pecado sólo se entiende con esta luz. Si todo quedase relegado al pecado,
seríamos los más desesperados de entre las criaturas, mientras que la promesa de la victoria del amor de Cristo encierra todo
en la misericordia del Padre. La palabra de Dios que hemos escuchado no deja lugar a dudas a este propósito. La Virgen
Inmaculada es para nosotros testigo privilegiado de esta promesa y de su cumplimiento.
Este Año Extraordinario es también un don de gracia. Entrar por la puerta significa descubrir la profundidad de la
misericordia del Padre que acoge a todos y sale personalmente al encuentro de cada uno. Es Él el que nos busca. Es Él el
que sale a nuestro encuentro. Será un año para crecer en la convicción de la misericordia. Cuánto se ofende a Dios y a su
gracia cuando se afirma sobre todo que los pecados son castigados por su juicio, en vez de destacar que son perdonados por su
misericordia (cf. san Agustín, De praedestinatione sanctorum 12, 24) Sí, así es precisamente. Debemos anteponer la misericordia
al juicio y, en cualquier caso, el juicio de Dios tendrá lugar siempre a la luz de su misericordia. Que el atravesar la Puerta Santa,
por lo tanto, haga que nos sintamos partícipes de este misterio de amor. Abandonemos toda forma de miedo y temor, porque no es
propio de quien es amado; vivamos, más bien, la alegría del encuentro con la gracia que lo transforma todo.
Hoy, aquí en Roma y en todas las diócesis del mundo, cruzando la Puerta Santa, queremos recordar también otra puerta que los
Padres del Concilio Vaticano II, hace cincuenta años, abrieron hacia el mundo. Esta fecha no puede ser recordada sólo por la
riqueza de los documentos producidos, que hasta el día de hoy permiten verificar el gran progreso realizado en la fe. En primer
lugar, sin embargo, el Concilio fue un encuentro. Un verdadero encuentro entre la Iglesia y los hombres de nuestro tiempo. Un
encuentro marcado por el poder del Espíritu que empujaba a la Iglesia a salir de las aguas poco profundas que durante
muchos años la habían recluido en sí misma, para reemprender con entusiasmo el camino misionero. Era un volver a tomar
el camino para ir al encuentro de cada hombre allí donde vive: en su ciudad, en su casa, en el trabajo...; dondequiera que haya una
persona, allí está llamada la Iglesia a ir para llevar la alegría del Evangelio y llevar la misericordia y el perdón de Dios. Un impulso
misionero, por lo tanto, que después de estas décadas seguimos retomando con la misma fuerza y el mismo entusiasmo. El jubileo
nos estimula a esta apertura y nos obliga a no descuidar el espíritu surgido en el Vaticano II, el del Samaritano, como recordó el
beato Pablo VI en la conclusión del Concilio. Que al cruzar hoy la Puerta Santa nos comprometamos a hacer nuestra la
misericordia del Buen Samaritano.

WHY IS THE NATIVITY SCENE SO IMPORTANT?
The first Nativity Scene was built by St. Francis of Assisi in Greccio, Italy around 1223. Thanks to St.
Francis, the Nativity Scene has become the most important sign of the Christmas season in the Catholic
tradition. We believe that now, after the first Christmas, we are able to see the humanity of our God, his
defenseless love, his humility and goodness. God has decided to be born in a stable, in a manger, among
animals. No barrier of majesty divides us from him. He has drawn to us as near as a child, so that we
may address him with familiarity.
In preparation for Christmas, and throughout the Christmas Season, it would be great if our families at
Queen of Peace would gather around the Nativity Scene to celebrate simple but very rich and
meaningful domestic liturgies. In front of the images of the historical, real and true presence of God among us, the parents introduce their
children to the different aspects of the Incarnation and to some kind of veneration of the Child Jesus, at the level that each one of them is able to
understand. Some themes for these home liturgies lived with the family could be: the Annunciation; the Visitation; Mary and Joseph’s
journey to Bethlehem; the Birth of Jesus; the Announcement to the Shepherds; the Adoration of the Three Wise Man; the Flight to Egypt; Jesus
is presented in the Temple; the Hidden life of Jesus in the Family of Nazareth. Next Sunday, December 20th, we will bless our Queen of
Peace Nativity Scene right before the 9:30 am Mass. All the children present in our church are invited to come around the
display and pray for a few seconds before the spectacle of a humble God who comes to live among us.
¿POR QUÉ ES TAN IMPORTANTE LA ESCENA DEL NACIMIENTO?
El primer nacimiento fue construido por San Francisco de Asís en Greccio, Italia alrededor de 1223. Gracias a San Francisco de Asís, el
Nacimiento es un signo muy importante en la temporada de Navidad para nuestra tradición Católica. Nosotros creemos, que después de
Navidad, somos capaces de ver la humanidad de Dios, su amor indefenso, su humildad y su bondad. Dios decidió nacer en un establo, en un pesebre junto con animales. No hay una barrera que nos separe de él. Él se ha acercado a nosotros en forma de un niño, para que nosotros los
veamos con familiaridad. San Francisco dice:” si hay algo que pueda conquistar la vanidad, la violencia, la avaricia del hombre es la
vulnerabilidad de un niño.”
En preparación de la Navidad y durante toda la temporada navideña, sería muy bonito si todas las familias de Reina de la Paz se reunieran
alrededor de El Nacimiento para celebrar simples pero muy enriquecedoras y significativas celebraciones de la liturgia. En frente de las
imágenes de la histórica, real y verdadera presencia de Dios entre nosotros, los papas les pueden presentar a sus hijos los diferentes aspectos de la
Encarnación y alguna veneración hacia el Niñito Jesús, al nivel de los niños para que puedan entender. Algunos de los temas que pueden
realizar las familias pueden ser: La Anunciación, La Visitación, el viaje de José y María a Belén; el Nacimiento de Jesús; el anuncio a los
pastores; la adoración a los Reyes Magos; el escape a Egipto; la presentación de Jesús al templo; la vida escondida de Jesús en la Familia de
Nazaret. El siguiente domingo, el 20 de diciembre se hará la bendición del Nacimiento antes de la misa de las 9:30 am. Todos los
niños que estén presentes en la iglesia son invitados a venir alrededor del nacimiento a rezar unos minutos para admirar el
espectáculo de que nuestro Dios humilde se viene a estar con nosotros.

parishioners. This is how one of our parishioners felt after attending
one of the Advent Mission;
“I have always prayed to the Blessed Mother for the healing of my
recurring cancer, after hearing Margarett, I am going to begin to
pray in a whole different way.”

Inspiration for the Season: Gaudete Sunday
This Sunday, the Third Sunday of Advent, or Rejoice Sunday. How great is that? It’s a reminder
that our preparation, though it includes repentance and efforts to bear fruit, is a joyful endeavor.
Our Lord is coming!
On the first Sunday of Advent, we were encouraged to live so that our hearts are not weighed
down with the worries of this world. Today’s first reading from Zephaniah is a reminder to celebrate.
God brings goodness and salvation! By the pink candle that we light this week during our Advent meditation, we can see that
the time is near. The light is returning to the world. What happiness we can enjoy as we make straight the paths! We can be
full of joy knowing that when the Messiah comes, we will celebrate with him.

Este domingo, el Tercer Domingo de Adviento, o Domingo de Jubilo. Qué grande es esto? Es un recordatorio de que nuestra
preparación, aunque incluye el arrepentimiento y esfuerzos a dar frutos, es un esfuerzo gozoso. Nuestro Señor viene!
En el primer Domingo de Adviento, nos animaron a vivir para que nuestros corazones no se carguen de las preocupaciones de
este mundo. La primera lectura de hoy de Sofonías es un recordatorio para celebrar. ¡Dios trae el bien y la salvación! Con la
vela rosada que encendemos esta semana durante nuestra meditación de Adviento, podemos ver que el tiempo está cerca. La
luz regresa al mundo. ¡Qué felicidad podemos disfrutar mientras hacemos rectos los caminos! Podemos estar llenos de alegría
sabiendo que cuando el Mesías venga, vamos a celebrar con él.

In the early 1960s the Knights of Columbus started a continuing effort over the years to “KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS”
as a counter to the increasingly secular approach to the holy season. Council 10122 has supported the program
since we were first chartered in the parish over 25 years ago.
This year the Council has been offering parishioners the chance to purchase display magnets with a manger scene
or lawn signs with the “KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS” message. These items are available from Past Grand Knight Gene Deges
(303-365-9182) or you may purchase one at our Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities the 19th and 20th of December after
each mass.

What Then Should We Do
Luke 3:7-18
Expectation was high for the Messiah’s coming; in fact, many
asked John the Baptist whether he was the Messiah. But as he
explained to the crowds who gathered, his water was no match
for the fire of the Holy Spirit to come.
John issued a warning, however: “every tree therefore that does
not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire” (v.9).
This prompted the worried listeners to ask, “What then should
we do?”
While John’s directions were specific, the meaning is relevant
today: share with anyone who has none; take only your fair
share; be satisfied and just and honest. We are to prepare for the
Lord by creating “good fruit” from all that he’s given us.
 Do I represent Jesus’ teaching in my interactions with my children,
family, friends, and neighbors?
 Do I live with the integrity of a follower of Christ?
 Am I preparing my heart for the birth of Jesus?
In your Advent prayer, ask yourself, “What then should I do?
What you act with the intention of preparing for the Messiah,
the possibilities for the fruit that you might bear are endless.
With God, nothing is impossible!

Qué Entonces Qué Debemos Hacer
Lucas 3: 7-18
La expectativa era alta para la venida del Mesías; de hecho,
muchos preguntaron a Juan el Bautista si él era el Mesías. Pero
como explicó a las multitudes que se reunían , su agua no podía
competir con el fuego del Espíritu Santo que esta por venir.
Juan emitió una advertencia, sin embargo: "todo árbol que no da
buen fruto, es cortado y echado en el fuego" (v.9). Esto llevó a los
oyentes preocupados a preguntar: "¿Qué debemos hacer?"
Mientras que las direcciones de Juan eran específicas, el significado es relevante hoy: compartir con cualquier persona que no
tiene; tome solamente la porción justa; siente satisfecho y se
justo y honesto. Debemos de prepararnos para el Señor creando
"buenos frutos" de todo lo que él nos ha dado.
 ¿Yo represento las enseñanzas de Jesús en mis interacciones
con mis hijos, familia, amigos y vecinos?
 ¿Vivo con la integridad de un seguidor de Cristo?
 ¿Estoy preparando mi corazón para el nacimiento de Jesús?

POPE FRANCIS TELLS YOUTH: “Do you want to make me happy ?? Read the Bible!”
Pope Francis has written the foreword to an edition of the German Bible for young people in which he asks: "Do you want to
make me happy? Read the Bible! ". In the text, Francis says that this is "something divine: a book like fire, a book in which
God speaks" and offers some tips for reading.
"My dear young friends, if you saw my Bible it might surprise you. You would say, 'What? Is this the Pope‟s Bible? A book
so old, so worn out!'" Francis writes joking.
But it goes further and continues: "You could also give me a new one, perhaps one that is worth 1000 euros: no, I would not
want it. I love my old Bible, the one that has accompanied me half of my life. It has been my joy, it has gotten wet from my
tears: it is my priceless treasure. I live for her and for nothing in this world I would keep it away from me."
In the text, the Pope asks that the Bible does not end up away on shelves of a library, "third row", "gathering dust". Because
"one day your children will sell it at a flea market. No! This can not be! " he exclaims.
"I want to tell you one thing: today, even more than in the early Church, Christians are persecuted; What is the reason?"
You asks. "They are persecuted because they carry a cross and bear witness to Christ; they are condemned because they
have a Bible. Evidently the Bible is a very dangerous book, such is the risk that in certain countries whoever has a Bible is
treated as if they were hiding a hand grenade in their closet".
EL PAPA FRANCISCO DICE A LOS JOVENES:"¿Quieren hacerme feliz?? Lean la Biblia"
El Papa Francisco ha escrito el prólogo a una edición de la Biblia alemana destinada a los jóvenes en el que les pregunta:
“¿Quieren hacerme feliz? ¡Lean la Biblia!”. En el texto, Francisco asegura que se trata de “algo divino: un libro como fuego,
un libro en el que Dios habla”, y ofrece algunos consejos para su lectura.
“Mis queridos jóvenes amigos, si ustedes vieran mi Biblia quizás les sorprendería. Dirían: „¿Qué? ¿Esta es la Biblia del
Papa? ¡Un libro así viejo, así de desgastado!’”, escribe bromeando Francisco.
Pero va más allá y continua: “Podrían también regalarme una nueva, quizás también una de 1.000 euros: no, no la querría.
Amo mi vieja Biblia, aquella que me ha acompañado la mitad de mi vida. Ha visto mi alegría, se ha mojado por mis lágrimas: es mi inestimable tesoro. Vivo por ella y por nada del mundo la apartaría de mí”.
En el texto, el Papa pide que la Biblia no termine apartada en las estanterías de la librería, “en tercera fila”, “llenándose de
polvo”. Porque “un día, vuestros hijos la venderán a un mercado de segunda mano. ¡No! ¡Esto no puede ser!”, exclama.
“Quiero decirles una cosa: hoy, todavía más que en los inicios de la Iglesia, los cristianos son perseguidos; ¿cuál es la
razón?”, se pregunta. "Son perseguidos porque llevan una cruz y dan testimonio de Cristo; son condenados porque poseen una Biblia. Evidentemente la Biblia es un libro extremadamente peligroso, de tal riesgo que en ciertos países quien
posee una Biblia es tratado como si escondiera en el armario una granada de mano”.

Serving the poor and homeless of Aurora since 1986
Happy 29th Anniversary to Friends of St. Andrew!! Friends began serving the poor
and homeless of Aurora in December 1986 as a brainchild of a small group of Queen
of Peace parishioners and the Pastor. Initially, this group saw the need for homeless persons to have a place to get in out of the
elements, have a cup of coffee and a pastry, and have access to newspapers for job hunting.
After a few short years, this vision blossomed into much more than its humble beginnings. We now serve the poor and homeless
by providing hot lunch Monday thru Friday, food baskets, toiletries, emergency prescription assistance, photo IDs, bus passes,
Thanksgiving meal baskets, and referrals to other agencies that can fill needs that we are not able to address.
Come down any Monday through Friday between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and visit. (We are located at 1525 Dallas Street and
used to be the city jail!) Also, if you would like more information about our parish outreach ministry, please call Maureen at
303-364-2329. This week’s most needed items: Toilet paper, body lotion, lip balm

Sirviendo a los pobres y desamparados de Aurora desde 1986
¡¡Feliz 29 Aniversario Amigos de San Andrés!! Amigos empezaron a servir a los pobres y desamparados de la Aurora en diciembre
de 1986 como una idea original de un pequeño grupo de feligreses de Reina de la Paz y del Pastor. Inicialmente, este grupo vio la
necesidad de las personas sin hogar que tuvieran un lugar para estar y salir fuera de los elementos, tomar una taza de café y un
pastel, y tener acceso a los periódicos para la búsqueda de empleo.
Después de unos pocos años, esta visión transformó en mucho más que sus humildes comienzos. Ahora servimos a los pobres y
desamparados, proporcionando almuerzo caliente de lunes a viernes, canastas de alimentos, artículos de higiene, Asistencia con
Recetas Médicas de emergencia, identificación con fotografía, pases de autobús, canastas de comida de Acción de Gracias, y
referencias a otras agencias que pueden llenar las necesidades que no somos capaces de abordar .
Pueden visitarnos cualquier día de la semana de lunes a viernes 10 a.m.-1:00 pm. (Estamos ubicados en 1525 Dallas Street y
