The Feast of the Epiphany can easily be seen as this innocent and cute story about
three old bearded men searching for a king and finding Him. However I think that this
story is much more, it is the whole dynamic between God and humanity boiled down
to its most essential elements. This is the story of what happens when we seek God
with all our strength and how He leads us to himself. These men we read about, these
Wise men, gave up land, comfort and wealth, all in search for meaning, for making
sense of life and the prophecies of old, in search for the answer to the questions that
plague our hearts. Am I loved? Can I be saved? Can I be forgiven? Who can fill my
heart?
They let a star guide them and in the end they find the answer they were looking
for, but as always, God surprises them by how he has answered. Rather than answering
from far away by way of strange signs, He gives humanity a clear answer, He gives
Himself to us. That is the great revelation of the Epiphany; Yes I am loved, yes I can
be saved and forgiven and my heart can be filled. Look, God himself has come to be
with us. He has come not as another conqueror, with arms and fire and violence, but rather with the one thing that
can conquer every heart, the pure innocence of a child. This feast day teaches us that there are things worth
searching for, even if it means going far away to the ends of the world, to the edges of our perseverance and
strength. Because in the end when we search for God wholeheartedly we find Him already here much closer than
we thought in the most unexpected ways.

Es fácil pensar que la fiesta de la Epifania es simplemente una inocente historia de tres viejitos con sus barbas
blancas que andaban buscando a un rey y lo encontraron. Pienso que en esta historia de la Epifania hay un
significado más grande, que esta historia es un resumen de la relación entre Dios y la humanidad. Esta es la historia
de lo que pasa cuando nosotros buscamos al Señor con todo nuestro corazón y todas nuestras fuerzas y como El nos
guía en el camino hacia El mismo. Estos reyes magos, estos hombres sabios de los cuales leemos dejaron atrás su
tierra, su comodidad y sus riquezas en busca de la respuesta a las preguntas que angustian nuestros corazones.
œQuien me amara? œQuien me salvara? œAcaso puedo ser perdonado? œQuién llenara mi corazón?
Ellos se dejan guiar por una estrella y al final encuentran la respuesta que andaban buscando, pero como
siempre, cuando Dios contesta la respuesta siempre nos sorprende. En vez de contestar desde lejos, a la distancia,
usando signos y señales extrañas El nos da una respuesta bien clara, nos da como respuesta a si mismo. Esto es lo
que la Epifania revela para nosotros: Sí, alguien te ama y te salva y te perdona, mira como Dios mismo viene a
amarte, a salvarte y a perdonarte. Mira como ha venido, no como un conquistador cualquiera, con fuego y violencia,
no, el ha venido a conquistar con lo
único que puede conquistar el
corazón de todo ser humano, la
inocencia y pureza de un bebe.
Esta Solemnidad nos enseña que
hay cosas por que vale la pena
dejarlo todo atrás e ir hasta los
confines de la tierra y llegar hasta
el límite de nuestros esfuerzos para
encontrarlas. Pues sabemos bien,
que al final, cuando salimos a buscar a Dios con todo nuestro
corazón lo vamos a encontrar
mucho mas cerca de lo que
creíamos y nos vamos a dar cuenta
que El ya estaba aquí entre nosotros de maneras que nunca nos
hubiéramos imaginado.

Corporal Works of Mercy: First and Second:
Feed the Hungry and Give Drink to the Thirsty
On the surface at least, feeding the hungry seems fairly
straightforward. We can help the hungry in simple ways: for
example by making donations to the local food bank or food
pantry. Moreover, unlike Christians in the ancient and
medieval world (when the list of corporal works of mercy was
first compiled), we can take the time to educate ourselves
about the problem of hunger in the world, and we can use our
voices and our votes to petition and pressure our politicians to
make the fight against world hunger a higher priority for our
government.
Giving drink to the thirsty can also be accomplished
through our role as voters: for example, by supporting clean
water policies to ensure that there will be clean water for future generations to drink. Meanwhile, right in our own
homes we can make our contributions to the effort to preserve clean, fresh water: for example, by using
environmentally friendly laundry detergents or by trying to be moderate in the amount of water we put on our
lawns.
The founder of the Eucharistic Apostles of The Divine Mercy, Dr. Bryan Thatcher, tells the following story of
how some students at his local Catholic high school made a big difference to people on the other side of the world
who lack fresh, clean water:

Spiritual Works of Mercy:: First: Admonish Sinners
This work of mercy · "tough love," you could call it · is one of the hardest to practice in the western world
today. Why? Because we live in the "I'm-OK-you're-OK" culture. As such, I have my own personal set of values, and
you have your own personal set of values, and we are each free to practice those values to our heart's content just as
long as we do not do grievous bodily harm to others in the process (although that limitation is waived when the
"others" in question are unborn children, the chronically ill, and elderly).
It can be very difficult to try admonishing someone today for, say, swearing in public or wearing provocative
clothing or talking loudly in church. Try objecting to the widespread availability of pornography, or try engaging in
non-violent protests outside an abortion clinic.
Nine times out of 10, the end result of these attempts to "admonish sinners," no matter how gently and
compassionately they are performed, is that one is branded an intolerant bigot. The problem is that we live in a
society dominated by people who have not made any real psychological or moral progress since they reached
adolescence. Thus, they stumble through life with an adolescent understanding of love. To be "loved," to them,
means to be affirmed in everything they want to do that does not cause anyone else (except unborn children, the
chronically ill, and elderly) grievous bodily harm. It is to spiritually adolescent people like this · to a whole society
dominated by such people · that we are called to "speak the truth
in love," as St. Paul put it (see Eph 4:15), with both courage and
compassion.
It is certainly not easy to do. It takes the virtue of prudence as
well: finding just the right moment and just the right words, and
saying them in a way that clearly affirms the human dignity of the
person you are admonishing, even as they challenge him or her to
fulfill his or her highest potential.
Saint Faustina set an excellent example for us in this regard. In
her convent in Poland she sometimes discerned the call of the Holy
Spirit to practice such "tough love." She actually became known in
her religious community for her boldness in admonishing even older
and more educated sisters in religion for their sins of malicious
gossip, and some of them, in the end, grudgingly respected her for

Superficialmente, al menos, alimentar a los hambrientos
parece bastante sencillo. Podemos ayudar a los hambrientos en

Obras Espirituales de Misericordia Primera: Corregir al que se equivoca
Esta obra de misericordia - "amor duro", se puede llamar así - es uno de las más difíciles de practicar en el mundo
occidental de hoy. œPor qué? Debido a que vivimos en la cultura "todo está bien". Como tal, tengo mi propio
conjunto de valores personales, y usted tiene su propio conjunto de valores personales, y estamos libres de practicar
ciertos valores de acuerdo a nuestro corazón con tal de que no causemos lesiones corporales graves a otros con
nuestros actos (aunque esa limitación no se aplica cuando los "otros" en cuestión son los niños no nacidos, los
enfermos crónicos y personas mayores).
Puede ser muy difícil tratar de corregir a alguien hoy, por ejemplo marcando el uso de ropa provocativa en
público o corregir el hablar en voz alta en la iglesia. Trate de oponerse a la amplia disponibilidad de la pornografía, o
intente participar en protestas no violentas fuera de una clínica de aborto.
Nueve de cada 10 veces, el resultado final de estos intentos de "corregir al que se equivoca," no importa cuán
suavemente o compasivamente se lleve a cabo, dará como resultado que le digan que es un fanático intolerante.
El problema es que vivimos en una sociedad dominada por personas que no han hecho ningún progreso
psicológico o moral real, al llegar a la adolescencia. Por lo tanto, tropiezan por la vida con una comprensión
adolescente del amor. El ser "amado", para ellos, significa que se afirman en todo lo que quieren hacer y que no

Hello Everyone, The upcoming marriage events, Passion & Purpose for Marriage on Friday, January 8th is our
English presentation, and Encuentro Matrimonial on Saturday, January 9th, is our Spanish presentation. The
events will host different speakers and presentations; the Spanish event is not a translation of the English. We will
be offering childcare free of charge to any ticket holder and they must sign up at our church office (the book is on
the table outside of my cubicle). Tickets are on sale for both events at our church office and St. RaphaelÊs office,
and on scheduled weekends at St. StephenÊs. Tickets are available online for the English event. Doors will open
at 6:00pm for the English session and 5:00pm for the Spanish session. See you there!

Bishop Anthony B. Taylor will celebrate the Mass for Life at 12:05 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 17 at the
Cathedral of St. Andrew in downtown Little Rock. Prior to the Mass, a Rosary for Life will be held at
11:30 a.m. Anyone who has lost a child is invited to sign the Book of Innocents in their memory. Red
roses will be placed near the altar to honor these children and their families during Mass

Feed the Hungry and Give Drink to the Thirsty
The founder of the Eucharistic Apostles of The Divine Mercy, Dr. Bryan Thatcher, tells the following story of
how some students at his local Catholic high school made a big difference to people on the other side of the world
who lack fresh, clean water:
I knew that typhoid and other diseases were rampant in part related to a lack of fresh drinking water in
developing countries. A seminarian from Nigeria told me once during a visit there that I had saved his
life. I looked at him in surprise and asked why. He said the antibiotics we had sent over had treated his
typhoid, and without them he would have died.
Sometime later I coordinated efforts with Bishop Martin Uzuokwu of the Diocese of Minna, Nigeria,
and Tampa Catholic High School to raise monies for a well in Nigeria. At that time, a well could be dug
and provide fresh water for an entire village for $3,000. The students raised monies in a variety of ways,
and I was amazed that when it was all done we had $9,000 · enough for three wells. So, through these
efforts, men, women, and children of three separate villages were able to get fresh drinking water!
It was a small effort, and the students may never meet the people that benefited. But it was a work of mercy that
will bear good fruit for many years to come.
