and throughout the world.
October 19, 2014
29th Sunday in Ordinary Time
The first reading from the prophet Isaiah concerns the
Persian King Cyrus, called the Lord’s “anointed.” Cyrus
deserves this title because he ended the Babylonian
captivity of the Jews. However, Isaiah reminds us that it
was God who gave Cyrus his power. He may be a great
king, but “I am the LORD and there is no other,” says God
(Isaiah 45:5).
Today’s Gospel is also concerned with worldly
power. In the passage from Matthew, the Pharisees try to
trick Jesus into speaking against the emperor. His famous
answer is the perfect reply. Like the kings of old, Caesar
can be given the respect due his position, but everything
belongs to God.
In the second reading, Paul gives thanks for all who
are faithful to Jesus Christ and his gospel. He, too,
reminds us that our call and the power to be faithful come
from God.

2• CHRIST, THE GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH, CAMPBELL, OHIO
As you know, we decided to cancel the parish
festival. But, we are replacing it with a “Food
Fest.” So, we have to decide how exactly we
want to organize this fundraiser. We have to answer questions like When? What are we having?
Other activities or entertainment? And, to answer
these questions we need your input. There is a
meeting on Thursday, October 23rd at St. Lucy
church at 6:30 pm to discuss the food fest. Come
and help us plan for this event.
Next weekend (Oct 24/25) there will be a social
after the 4pm and Noon Masses. This is part of
our regularly scheduled socials. Come and spend
some time with your fellow parishioners.
Finally, I was asked why some angels are called
“Saint,” especially St. Michael the Archangel.
And, although the most common use of “saint”
today is in reference to a person who has died
who gave a
heroic witness to the faith, there are other uses.
In the New Testament, St. Paul would refer to
other Christians as “saints,” even before they
have died. So, those living a Christian life were
recognized as set apart. The Latin is “sanctus/
sancta.” It means “holy” or “set apart.” Over
time, the practice
became to only refer to certain people who have
died as “Saints.” But, the inclusion of St. Michael the Archangel as a saint is using the broader
sense of the term as “holy,” as “close to God.”
And, of course, the angels are close to God. So,
to call St. Michael a “Saint” is not confuse an angel with a human person—but to recognize that
the angels are holy.
God bless you,
Fr. Conoboy
Como ustedes saben, decidimos cancelar el festival
de la parroquia. Pero, lo vamos a reemplazar con un
“Festival de Comida”. Así, que debemos decidir
como queremos organizar esta recaudación de fondo.
Tenemos que contestar varias preguntas como:
Cuando? Que vamos a tener? Algunas otras
actividades o entretenimiento?
P. Conoboy

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE
Today’s Gospel is not only a question about taxes, but
rather, a question about Church and state. Do we allow
our political affiliations to shape and form our belief in
Church teaching or do we truly allow our relationship
with Christ and His Church to challenge our
understanding and opinions in the public forum. May our
sense of faith and stewardship invite us to always put
Christ first.

Christ, the Good Shepherd Mass Intention Schedule 2015
In order for everyone to receive a Mass you may request one (1) Mass, per family, but
only two (2) weekend Masses for the same deceased family member. At the end of the
scheduling week if there are some openings left you may schedule another Mass.
(Example of family: M/M and children, widowed parent living with children, adult son
or daughter living with parents, and must have envelopes.) If your loved one has Masses
in the Funeral Mass Intention Book your request may come from the Mass book unless
you wish your Mass request be from your family. The Mass in the Funeral Mass
Intention Book will then be offered by one of the retired priests of our diocese. (If you
wish other Masses said for a loved one, we would be happy to send them to the retired
priests of our diocese.)
Mass requests are taken on a first-come, first-served basis and the stipend ($10.00) must
accompany the request. Mass intentions will not be accepted for Holy Thursday, Easter
Vigil, Easter Sunday, Christmas Eve/Day, Mothers Day, Fathers Day and Special Feast
Days.
“WHY DO WE HAVE MASS INTENTIONS FOR LOVED ONES, AND WHY
DO WE HAVE MASSES FOR THE PEOPLE OF THE PARISH?”
Mass Intentions for loved ones who have died, reflects well the Biblical passage of 2 Maccabees 12:43-46,
which focuses on praying for the dead. We also celebrate special days for our living friends, such as
anniversaries. Obviously, we keep in our prayers, at any Mass, our loved ones, both living and deceased,
as well as our own special concerns. Masses for the “People of the Parish” are set aside to remind us to
pray for each other.
2015 REQUEST SCHEDULE
The 2015 Mass Intention Book is open for your requests beginning Monday, October 27.
Monday - Friday 9:00 am - 3:00 pm (not Wednesday)
Mass intentions for Saturdays can be shared (up to 3)
Mass intentions for Tuesday can be shared (up to 3)
