Weekly Reflection
Reflexión Semanal
Getting ready
Preparándonos
Today’s readings and prayers prepare us to commemorate the long awaited historical moment when God sent
his Son to redeem the world. The gospel documents the
time of Jesus’ life by citing the governor and tetrarchs
who were in power. The gospel also includes Isaiah’s
prophesy that “a voice of one crying in the desert”
would encourage all to repent and prepare for the
Lord’s coming. This speaks to John the Baptist’s recognition that Jesus is the Messiah, the fulfillment of the
promise recorded in Baruch’s Old Testament writing.
Advent commemorates the anticipation of Jesus’ birth.
Although we can never experience the joy of seeing
Jesus during his life on earth, we are blessed with the
knowledge and assurance that our salvation has been
won through his birth, death, and resurrection. Saint
Paul speaks to this joyful confidence in his letter to the
Philippians when he writes, “And this is my prayer: that
your love may increase ever more and more in
knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern
what is of value, so that you may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ.” This is the focus of our Advent as we spend the next weeks preparing our hearts, discerning as Paul suggests so we will be ready when Jesus
comes. We focus on his coming as a
baby, commemorating that singular day,
so that we may be renewed in our preparation for his second coming. We light
the second candle on the Advent wreath
and pray, “Almighty and merciful God,
may no earthly undertaking hinder those
who set out in haste to meet your Son,
[and] may our learning of heavenly wisdom gain us admittance to his company” (Collect).
Aunque no podemos

The logo and the motto together provide a
fitting summary of what the Jubilee Year
is all about. The motto Merciful Like the
Father (taken from the Gospel of Luke,
6:36) serves as an invitation to follow the
merciful example of the Father who asks
us not to judge or condemn but to forgive
and to give love and forgiveness without
measure (cfr. Lk 6:37-38). The logo – the
work of Jesuit Father Marko I. Rupnik – presents a
small summa theologiae of the theme of mercy. In fact, it
represents an image quite important to the early Church:
that of the Son having taken upon his shoulders the lost
soul demonstrating that it is the love of Christ that brings
to completion the mystery of his incarnation culminating in
redemption. The logo has been designed in such a way
so as to express the profound way in which the Good
Shepherd touches the flesh of humanity and does so with
a love with the power to change one’s life. One particular
feature worthy of note is that while the Good Shepherd, in
his great mercy, takes humanity upon himself, his eyes
are merged with those of man. Christ sees with the eyes
of Adam, and Adam with the eyes of Christ. Every person
discovers in Christ, the new Adam, one’s own humanity
and the future that lies ahead, contemplating, in his gaze,
the
love
of
the
Father.
The scene is captured within the so called mandorla (the
shape of an almond), a figure quite important in early and
medieval iconography, for it calls to mind the two natures
of Christ, divine and human. The three concentric ovals,
with colors progressively lighter as we move outward,
suggest the movement of Christ who carries humanity out
of the night of sin and death. Conversely, the depth of the
darker color suggests the impenetrability of the love of the
Father who forgives all. Taken from www.usccb.org.

In OLA tradition we will once again have our
Prayer Angel Tree in the sanctuary. We invite you to write your prayer need/intention
on a blank angel and either hang it on the tree or place in
the basket, do not write your name. Then, take home the
angel (or two) of another parishioner to pray for. As a
parish family we will pray for one and other's needs
throughout the season of Advent. All angels will be
prayed over whether taken home or not.

Safe Environment
Did you Know?
If you let your kids go to the mall
by themselves to buy Christmas
presents, you should talk to them
about potential dangers they
need to guard against. Christmas
is the busiest time of year for commercial retail, which
means that malls and shopping centers will be more
crowded, and younger kids and teens who are alone may
be a target for kidnappers and other dangers. Talk to your
children about being aware of their surroundings, and
where to go for help. Be in contact with them while they’re
shopping, and have a check-in place and time set if
you’re splitting up. For more information please visit:
