Lent

THE MEANING OF OUR BAPTISM
Lent is the time of year that we devote to scrutinizing our
lives in the light of our baptism into the death and resurrection
of Jesus. Today’s readings are a nice shorthand catechism of
what our baptized lives mean. As Noah passed through the waters of the flood to a covenant with God, so did we enter into a
covenant, a promised relationship with God through our baptism. The psalm reminds us that if we truly keep the covenant,
the way of life God expects us to follow will not be a burden,
but a source of love and truth. Peter’s letter gives one explanation of what our baptism means: it is an appeal that we make to
God for a clear conscience. How do we obtain this clear conscience? The words that Jesus proclaims immediately following
his temptation show us the way: “Repent and believe in the
gospel.” It might be a good spiritual exercise to keep these
readings before us throughout the entire season of Lent, a
means to help us return to a life lived in our baptismal promises.

Friday Lenten Fish Fry from 5:00 to 7:00 pm
in the Community Center.
Tickets may be purchased ahead of time adults $6.00—children $5.00 in the school or
rectory office. Each ticket will be $1.00 more if purchased at
the door. A drink and a dessert will come with the meal. Looking forward to seeing you there.
GUIDELINES FOR LENTEN OBSERVANCE
Good Friday : Is day of fast and abstinence.
Fridays during Lent - are days of abstinence.
Fasting - binds all persons who have completed their 18th
birthday through those who have completed their 59th year,
unless prevented by poor health. On days of fast, one full meal
is allowed. Two other meals sufficient to maintain strength,
may be taken according to one’s own needs. Eating between
meals is not allowed although fluids may be taken.
Abstinence - binds all persons who have completed their 14th
birthday, unless prevented by poor health. On days of abstinence, the consumption of meat is not allowed. The Church
strongly encourages the observance of Friday abstinence, but
failure to do so is not regarded as sinful.

2015-2016 REGISTRATION
Holy Ghost School is now accepting new students for
the 2015-2016 school year. Families may pick up the
registration packet at any time between 8:30 am 1:30 pm in the school office, Monday through Friday.
There are openings on all grade levels from PK3
through the 8th Grade. Forms for tuition assistance
are also available in the school office.

LENTEN EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
Every Friday during Lent, we will have Eucharistic
Adoration following the 8:10 am Mass. The Blessed
Sacrament will be exposed after the morning Mass and
will remain in the sanctuary until the Benediction and
Reposition at 5:30 P.M. This is a wonderful opportunity to spend time in the true Presence of Our Savior.

8-14 lbs. New clothing for infants is wonderful, clean used items “Gently used” please..
Flyers will be at the entrances of the church.
On the days of the Diaper Drives– angels will be outside at the
entrances of the church. Cash donations also are accepted.

need live in our Community. Psalm 127:3 Children too are a
gift from God, the fruit of the womb, a reward 4: Like arrows in
the hand of the warrior are the children born in one’s youth.

EL SIGNIFICADO DE NUESTRO BAUTISMO
Cuaresma es la época del año que dedicamos a escudriñar
nuestras vidas a la luz de nuestro Bautismo en la muerte y resurrección de Jesús. Las lecturas de hoy son como un catecismo
abreviado de lo que nuestras vidas de bautizados significan. Tal
como Noé pasó por las aguas del diluvio a una alianza con
Dios, así también nosotros entramos en una alianza, una relación con Dios prometida por nuestro Bautismo. El salmo nos
recuerda que si realmente vivimos la alianza, el modo de vida
que Dios quiere que vivamos no va a ser una carga, sino una
fuente de amor y verdad. La carta de Pedro ofrece una explicación de lo que significa nuestro bautismo: es una plegaria a
Dios pidiendo una buena conciencia. ¿Cómo obtenemos esta
buena conciencia? Las palabras que Jesús proclama justo después de su tentación nos señala el camino: “Arrepiéntanse y
crean en el Evangelio”. Podría ser un buen ejercicio espiritual
mantener estas lecturas a nuestro alcance durante todo el tiempo
de Cuaresma, un medio para ayudarnos a volver a una vida vivida según nuestras promesas bautismales.
GUIA PARA LA CUARESMA
Viernes Santo - Es día de ayuno y abstinencia.
Viernes de Cuaresma - Son días de abistinencia
Ayuno - Es para personas que han cumplido 18 años hasta los
que han cumplido 59 años, a menos que tengan condiciones de
salud. En días de ayuno, una comida completa es permitida. Y dos comidas pequeñas
que le permitan mantener sus fuerzas
pueden hacerse de acuerdo a las necesidades
de cada persona. Comer entre comidas no es
permitido, pero si tomar líquidos.
Abstinencia - Es para todas las personas
que han cumplido 14 años, a menos que
tengan problemas de salud. En días de abstinencia no es permitido comer carne. Durante los Viernes de
Cuaresma no se debe comer carne, pero si lo hace no es pecado.
