SAINT ATHANASIUS
"REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE DUST
AND TO DUST YOU WILL RETURN"
This Wednesday, February 18, we begin the season of Lent.
Ash Wednesday is like the gateway to Lent. The purple
color of the priest's vestment and of the altar announces it.
We cross our forehead with ashes which came from the
palm leaves of the previous year's Palm Sunday that were
burned. These ashes will be blessed during the rite of
anointing. Ashes and dust are common biblical symbols of
humility, of repentance and pleading for God's mercy.
Even today we can still see on television and read in the
newspapers that many people in the Middle East countries
sprinkle their head and body with ashes as a symbol of
grieving. Our sins against God and against one another have
made us of no more value in the eyes of God just like dust
and ashes.
Our life and our world are filled with things we make, acquire and keep because of their functional, aesthetic, sentimental and monetary values. These beautiful things including us people come in different sizes, shapes and colors. But
after these are burned, they will all become ashes. Gone is
their beauty and uniqueness. Gone is their value. They are
good for nothing except to be thrown away. In 1988 an arsonist burned the Novitiate Seminary where I was assigned
as Novice Master after my studies at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA. Many precious things I had kept
from my childhood; mementos from my deceased parents,
from my studies including diplomas, awards, medals and
certificates, and from my ordinations to the Diaconate and
Priesthood including my ordination chalice and ceborium;
remembrances from parishioners in parishes I had served
during my 13 years as a priest; almost all memorable photos..... they all disappeared one night...they were burned to
ashes. I still have a photo of myself standing on the heap of
ashes of what used to be my office and bedroom. After
they were reduced to ashes they were of no more value except the last letter from my mother before she died in 1970
which survived the fire.
With ashes on our forehead, we are telling God in all humility that if He does not forgive us, we have no value whatsoever. Like the people in the time of the Prophet Joel, we are
asking God to forgive us so that we may have again his
blessings and love. Like the Prophet Daniel, like Judith, like
the King of Nineveh and his repentant followers who listened to Jonah' s message, we anoint or cross our forehead
with ashes and repent of our sins. Like them we "turn away
from sin and be faithful to the gospel" for we "remember
that we are dust and to dust we will return." With the
anointing of ashes we also observe fasting and abstinence
on Ash Wednesday. We observe abstinence on all Fridays
of Lent. We hope and pray that God will be merciful to us
again.

Lenten Fasting Requirements
Minimum Fasting Requirements: Catholics between the ages
of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good
Friday. In addition, all Catholics 14 years old and older must
abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the
Fridays of Lent. Fasting means partaking of only one full
meal. Some food (not equaling another full meal) is permitted
at breakfast and around midday or in the evening—depending
on when a person chooses to eat the main or full meal. Abstinence forbids the use of meat, but not of eggs, milk products or
condiments made of animal fat, such as margarine or lard.
BOLETIN HISPANO
