OUR PRAYERS
REQUESTED
ARE
FOR THE REPOSE
OF THE SOUL OF
CARLTON TARKINGTON
PATRICIA ANNE WARNER
CYNTHIA CATHERINE ROLAND
THE
PASTOR
I write this note to thank everyone who gave special financial
gifts to the Cathedral during our Christmas season. We were on
target for an end-of-the-year deficit of almost $500,000. So many
of you were so generous that our projected deficit has been cut in
half! I cannot say thank you enough.
We are on track to see an end-of-the-year deficit of about
$250,000. The first way to avoid this is to pay attention to our
regular collection. If we work together and increase giving to
$30,000 per week, we should just about break even. On the next
page you can see that on January 4th and 11th the collections
were just above half of our weekly target. What our priests and
deacons note is that attendance and the size of the collection
match each other. Please remember your parish financially even
when you cannot be here on a given weekend.
The good news is that our projected deficit is, for the most
part, a reflection of our debt. Each year our payment total should
be $360,000. I say this is good news because it means we are
controlling our operational expenses. The best news is this: We
have been given a challenge grant of $300,000! If we can raise
$300,000 by June 30, we will realize $600,000, which is slightly
over a quarter of our debt. This past week we had the first meeting to organize a capital campaign to completely retire our debt,
provide a new organ for the Cathedral, and enable us to make
much needed improvements. I am going to need a lot of help! We
do have parishioners willing to serve as campaign chairs. Please
be ready to help when we announce the need for volunteers!
NEED YOUR CHILD BAPTIZED?
Our monthly Baptism Class for parents and those asked to be
Godparents is this Tuesday evening (Feb. 3) at 7:00 p.m. It is
held in the church. Parents who are expecting might consider attending before the birth of your child, so that time doesn’t catch
up with you after the blessed day!
READY
AND
HUNGRY
FOR
SERIOUS LEARNING?
This Sunday Father Steiner continues offering a
bit of Liturgical History in our Sunday Adult OnGoing Formation Program. He is giving a series on
the history of our Mass from the beginning to the present. The program is on Sunday mornings at 9:45am
in room 305 of St. Albert Hall. All are Welcome!

The Liturgy Moves into Churches: What happened?
How did we get Bishops, Priests and Deacons? How
did the ritual develop?
Taking Control: Who’s in charge of the Liturgy? Some
hard decisions about what parts stayed in, what was
omitted, and some blood is shed over the decisions!
**In case of snow or inclement weather, presentations will be delayed a week.

CATHEDRAL KNIGHTS S*PER BOWL PARTY
TONIGHT
The Cathedral Knights invite parishioners and friends to their annual S*per
Bowl Party & Chili Cook-Off tonight
(Sunday) in the Fleming Center. The
Knights’ party is widely considered to be
the best in town! The vote for the best chili will be at
halftime (for those who want to enter their chili in the cookoff). There will trivia contests, games to participate in for
adults and children. All attendees are encouraged to bring
either chili, a side dish, a tailgating item, or small donation
as the price of admittance. The party begins at 5:00 p.m.
SERVE YOUR PARISH
Become an Extraordinary Minister
More Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist are needed at our weekend Masses! If you are interested, please
email Ken Leediker at [email protected]. Rising juniors in
high school and up are eligible to serve in this important
ministry!
Become a Reader
God’s living word continues to be proclaimed to His
people through this ministry. This ministry provides many
blessings to both the Reader and the people of the Cathedral.
As with all ministries of the Church, one must have the appropriate skills and feel the call to serve the Church in this
way. We have a need for those who are interested in reading
at both weekend and daily Masses. If you are able to serve at
any weekend Mass or any of the 7 a.m. or 12:10 p.m. weekday Masses, please contact Stephen Penton at 615-693-1446
or [email protected]

NEW ALTAR
The first-class relics (bones) in
the sealed box inside the new Altar
are of Saints Athanasius the Great,
Benignus of Dijon, and Eulalia of
Barcelona. St. Athanasius (c. 296–
298 – 02 May 373) was bishop of Alexandria and a Doctor of the Church.
He was exiled five times from Alexandria because of his faith. St. Benignus brought Christianity to Dijon in
France. He was martyred at Epagny in
Burgundy under the Emperor Aurelian sometime between 270 & 275 A.D.
St. Eulalia (c. 290 – 12 Feb 303) was a 13-year-old Roman girl
who suffered martyrdom in Barcelona during persecution in the
reign of Emperor Diocletian.
These relics were in the original altar in the Pro-Cathedral,
where Masses were said here from 1909—1914. In addition to
these relics, a second class relic (part of a dress) of St. Katherine
Drexel, who founded St. Vincent de Paul parish, has been added.

EVENTS IN OUR DIOCESE
ST. CECILIA MOTHERHOUSE
To celebrate this Year of Consecrated Life declared by
Pope Francis, the Dominican Sisters of Saint Cecilia will
join religious communities around the 2015 from 2–4:00
p.m. at their Motherhouse: 801 Dominican Drive in the
Metro Center area. All are invited to visit the Sisters at the
Motherhouse and share something of the joy of their Dominican religious life. Normally most parts of the convent
are not open for visitors, so this is a rare occasion for our
Catholic family! It is also an opportunity to take your nonCatholic friends who have questions about our Religious
women.
ST. CECILIA ACADEMY ROSE GALA
Join us for the St. Cecilia Academy Rose Gala on February 21! All proceeds from the gala benefit students. This
year’s event will be an 80s themed party with online, silent,
and live auctions. We are also looking for items for our auctions. Do you have an item or do you provide a service that
you could donate to the auction? Do you know a business
that could donate an item or service? To order tickets, donate, or see the online auction items visit our web page:
