Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time—February 15, 2015
Welcome! If you are a visitor to the Cathedral, we want you to know how welcome you are whether you have come from another part
of the country, from across the world, or from another parish here in the Archdiocese. Thanks, in part, to the generosity of visitors like
you, we are able to celebrate the liturgy in a fitting and beautiful way, and also we are able to give spiritual and emotional support
through a variety of services to the community. Your gift is greatly appreciated; our parish family is small and we rely on the generosity
of you, our visitors, to help sustain this magnificent Cathedral church for future generations.

Again we keep this solemn fast, a gift of faith from ages past,
This Lent which binds us lovingly to faith and
hope and charity.
More sparing, therefore, let us make the words we speak, the
food we take, our sleep, our laughter, every sense;
Learn peace through holy penitence.

ABSTINENCE
Everyone fourteen years of age and older is bound to
abstain from meat on ASH WEDNESDAY, the FRIDAYS
of Lent and GOOD FRIDAY.
Everyone eighteen years of age and older but under the
age of sixty is also bound to fast on ASH WEDNESDAY
and GOOD FRIDAY.
On these two days, the law of fast allows only one full
meal a day, but does not prohibit taking some food
during the day, so long as this does not constitute another
full meal. Drinking liquids during the day is permitted.
When health or ability to work would be seriously
affected, the law does not oblige. In doubt concerning
fast or abstinence, a priest assigned to pastoral ministry
or confessor should be consulted. In the spirit of
penance, the faithful should not lightly excuse themselves
from this obligation.
Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time—February 15, 2015
Tradiciones de Nuestra Fe
Treasures from Our Tradition
Lent, the Church’s annual pre-baptismal retreat, prepares
us to gather around the Easter font, renew our baptismal
vows, and receive new life from the water as the elect are
plunged into Christ’s death and resurrection. This core
meaning is more or less available, depending on whether
we journey with catechumens in the parish and on the
vigor of our liturgical celebration of the Triduum. Some
persist in seeing Lent as a lonely journey in the
wilderness; yet this week we enter the Lenten fast in
solidarity with one another. The smudged foreheads you
will spy throughout Ash Wednesday on buses, street
corners, and supermarket aisles remind you that you are
hardly alone in your desire to enact a spring cleaning
regime for your spiritual life.

Free Grief Support Session
A free Grief Support Session is held at St. Mary’s Cathedral

Wednesday in February, our Grief Support Session this

the Msgr. Bowe Rm. These sessions provide information
on the grief process, and tips on coping with the loss of a
loved one. Facilitator: Dcn. Christoph Sandoval. For

Long ago, this kind of repentance was available to
Christians only once. Ashes and sackcloth were not
raiment for a day, but permanent habits for public
sinners. Fasting became a way of life, and if they sinned
severely again, there was no hope of restored
communion. Happily, this system did not endure. It
produced reluctant Christians who even held back from
baptism, like St. Augustine did, out of fear. Today we
have recovered an ancient tradition that conversion and
repentance are constant themes on life’s journey, and that
Lent is an annual opportunity to revive our baptismal
identity, both as individuals and communities.

Weekly Collection
We will be sharing information with you in the weekly bulletin about how actual collections and other donations
compare with our financial goals.
Building our yearly budget is straightforward. After estimating expenses, we estimate annual collections and other
donations based on what we received in recent years. The result is a considerable gap between expenses and anticipated
donations. The Cathedral works hard to close this gap with revenue generated by our Events Center and gift shop,
interest income, Archdiocesan subsidy, savings and endowment, plus other donations and special gifts in addition to the
regular weekly offering. While sometimes necessary to cover operating costs, it is not fiscally prudent to withdraw funds
from our savings or endowment. This is why we are so grateful for annual collections and other donations.
For the Fiscal Year 2015, July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015, our annual goal is $363,000 or an average of $7,260 per week
(excluding Christmas and Easter weeks). We hope this new reporting method provides you with information that helps
you thoughtfully consider you giving to the Cathedral.
We thank you for your generous support! If you have any questions or comments for us, please contact the Cathedral’s
Development Department at 415-567-2020, ext. 229.
