Yeah, there were parts so over my head it made me laugh but parts also cut deep into the heart
of my mind. A great read, even if you don't understand the possible concept.

I picked up this book assuming it was some kind of Science Fiction-cum-mystery novel. It’s not
exactly that. It does have a strong SF element, but it has equally strong elements of horror and
suspense. Apparently the author does like his death and mayhem. He certainly provides plenty
of it here!
Even though Zig Zag was a very different book than I anticipated, I did enjoy reading it. The
suspense/mystery kept me guessing right up until the final reveal. The villain wasn’t the person
I felt it was leading up to (even though he did turn out to be a very sick wacko in the closing
chapters), but the author’s villain was a nice twist.
The book uses some ideas about string theory to postulate a method where one can view the
past. Not travel into it, but just see images created at prior moments (and saved as ‘strings”).
The scientists devise a relatively low-power way to excite and “unravel” these strings to that
they can be imaged and recorded. Pretty good science extrapolation, there. The book revolves
around several scientists who build and run a complex (on a conveniently remote island) to do
just that.
Of course, nothing in life is so simple. First, the funding comes from a shady (perhaps quasiillegal) and government-affiliated organization. They also provide top-flight security (and
“minders”) for the scientists. It is their island that has been setup for the experiments. Second,
the time-viewing has unintended consequences on the viewers and reality (if there were none, it
would have been a fairly dry book). Third, the result of the experiments is so powerful that
everyone who leaves the island is subject to years of medical tests, drugs and mental
manipulation.
Since I really don’t want to spoil the book for those who haven’t read it, I’m going to stop
talking about the plot and characters here. If you like hard SF books with a positive
outcome/worldview then this might not be your cup of future history. (It spans the 90’s to 2015.)
On the other hand, if you don’t mind some thrill and gore, then you might decide this is very
good. I would characterize it as “horror with an SF backbone” since the balance is more away
form SF than I would normally prefer.
The translation (from Spanish) seemed very good. Overall, it is a solid book with a good
storyline. A bit over three full (3.25) stars.
And, now that I know what to expect, I may look up
Mr. Somoza’s other novels.

original, engancha enseguida. Entre el estilo literario ágil, ameno, claro, sin muchas florituras
lingüisticas y con gran habilidad para crear momentos de tensión (es decir el típico estilo de
best-seller) y una temática atrayente, original, atrevida por su complejidad intrínseca (la teoría
física de los angeles cuerdas) pero a los angeles vez bien expuesta, el libro te atrapa des del
principio.La trama crece y toma unos derroteros que hace pensar en una historia trascendental
(que afectará a los angeles historia de los angeles humanidad) para luego quedarse en un easy
mystery de supervivencia de unos personajes enfrente de una entidad monstruosa
desconocida. Con todo, l. a. historia, por su ritmo trepidante y los momentos puntuales de
tensión, se aguanta bastante bien.Al final, a mi entender, se complica en exceso, cuesta un
poco comprenderlo bien y pierde esa sensación inicial de realidad plausible. Perder esa
“credibilidad de lo posible” me desilusionó un poco... Aún así, el incierto ultimate me gustó
(tengo debilidad por los desenlaces abiertos o catastroficos...) y acabó dejandome un buen
sabor de boca. Es un libro que después de haberlo terminado me dejó con algunos
interrogantes de conceptos no acabados de entender o de creer... Supongo que con una
relectura los aclararía, pero no estaba dispuesto a tanto. Lo que sí hice fue leerme un foro
(www.abretelibro.com) donde se comentaba este libro y fue muy interesante ver las conjeturas
y las dudas de los foreros, así como las intervención del mismo Somoza. En resumen, un buen
libro, un trepidante mystery de ciencia ficción (con toques de terror), muy entretenido, original,
que empieza de maravilla pero que se lía y pierde un poco fuelle hacia al final. Lo recomiendo
como un muy buen entretenimiento, pero sin más.
